Natural Substances for the Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles against Escherichia coli

The development of drug-resistant strains is rising and the search for new and novel ways of fighting new or reemerging microbes goes on. A hope of treating such multidrug-resistant infections came from plants mediated nanoparticles since nature is a generous source which provides a variety of chemical compounds that can be used for new drug discovery. Silver nanoparticles are reported to possess antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, larvicidal activity and anticancer properties. We reported green synthesis of silver nanoparticles mediated food plants Megaphrynium macrostachyum, Corchorus olitorus, Ricinodendron heudelotii, Gnetum bucholzianum, and Ipomoea batatas and their antibacterial efficacy against the Enterobacteriaceae Escherichia coli. The nature and size of the obtained nanoparticles are discussed as well as their Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and the Minimum Bactericide Concentration (MBC) values considering their application in medical industry

Transcriptome and Proteome Exploration to Model Translation Efficiency and Protein Stability in Lactococcus lactis

This genome-scale study analysed the various parameters influencing protein levels in cells. To achieve this goal, the model bacterium Lactococcus lactis was grown at steady state in continuous cultures at different growth rates, and proteomic and transcriptomic data were thoroughly compared. Ratios of mRNA to protein were highly variable among proteins but also, for a given gene, between the different growth conditions. The modeling of cellular processes combined with a data fitting modeling approach allowed both translation efficiencies and degradation rates to be estimated for each protein in each growth condition. Estimated translational efficiencies and degradation rates strongly differed between proteins and were tested for their biological significance through statistical correlations with relevant parameters such as codon or amino acid bias. These efficiencies and degradation rates were not constant in all growth conditions and were inversely proportional to the growth rate, indicating a more efficient translation at low growth rate but an antagonistic higher rate of protein degradation. Estimated protein median half-lives ranged from 23 to 224 min, underlying the importance of protein degradation notably at low growth rates. The regulation of intracellular protein level was analysed through regulatory coefficient calculations, revealing a complex control depending on protein and growth conditions. The modeling approach enabled translational efficiencies and protein degradation rates to be estimated, two biological parameters extremely difficult to determine experimentally and generally lacking in bacteria. This method is generic and can now be extended to other environments and/or other micro-organisms

Objet de fascination et non plus de crainte, la montagne apparaît, à la suite de Rousseau et Senancour, dans toute sa majesté, à la fois vierge, mystérieuse, repliée sur elle-même et porteuse d’un message d’universalité. Après avoir longtemps suscité peur et préjugés depuis l’Antiquité, la montagne est devenue au xviiie siècle un territoire de conquête et de découverte générant toute une mythologie et un imaginaire qui vont modifier le rapport des sociétés européennes avec le milieu des sommets. La notion de patrimoine à travers trois liasses du fonds des Hospices civils de Lyon : la bataille de l’hôtel-Dieu

The Hôtel-Dieu at Lyons was closed as a hospital in 2010 and given statutory historic monument protection in 2011. Today, a hundred years after the earliest plans to close this hospital, there is a new debate confronting the ‘antis’ and the ‘pros’. Throughout the twentieth century, the critical fortune of this architectural ensemble has seen considerable change. At the end of the nineteenth century and during the first decade of the twentieth, when the decision was taken to build the Grange-Blanche hospital (today’s Édouard Herriot hospital), the conservation of the central part of the Soufflot wing overlooking the river Rhone (and re-baptised the Quai palace or the Soufflot palace) was unanimously welcomed. But there was less enthusiasm for other buildings dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, even though, only fifteen years earlier, several million francs had been invested in the hospital’s latest construction campaign. The debates were lively. Those in favour of keeping the buildings assembled arguments that included the well-being of the hospital’s patients, the place of the hospital in the history of medicine, and the artistic value of the buildings. The partisans of the demolition of the buildings and of better hygiene at any price only saw picturesque values in the old buildings, values that were of no weight when set against medical progress. The article offers an overview of how the notion of heritage evolved as it underpinned the lively exchanges of the early twentieth century.
