    Heavy Metals Accumulation by Indigenous Plants Growing in Contaminated Soil in a Gold Mining Area in Ghana

    Phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly, low cost biotechnological process that is fast gaining prominence in the cleaning of contaminated soils in the tropics. The accumulative potential of indigenous or native plants for heavy metals in mine tailings at the Storage Facility of the Chirano Gold Mine Limited, Ghana was investigated. Plant species were sampled in five plots, each 32 m2. Samples of plants were harvested and separated into roots and shoots and the corresponding rhizospheric soil samples collected. They were analysed for the total concentrations of heavy metals; Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd) and Zinc (Zn) using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Bioavailable fractions of studied metals in the soil samples were determined with the formation of metal complex with Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and ammonium acetate reagents. The hyper-accumulation potential and mobility of heavy metals within the plants were determined from the bioaccumulation and translocation factors. Differences in mean concentrations of heavy metals in the plants (shoot, root and whole) were separated using Tukey B Analysis of Variance, SPSS version 20, at significant level of p < 0.05. The mean concentrations of total and bioavailable As, Cd, and Zn in the soil samples varied with Zinc being most predominant (13.20 mg/kg). However, As was the most available with 39% bioavailability. The soil elemental concentrations of As (3.0 mg/kg), Cd (0.29 mg/kg) and Zn (13.20 mg/kg) were below the WHO recommended standards of 12 mg/kg, 1.4 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg for As, Cd and Zn respectively. The concentrations of all metals in the plant organs varied between species. In all plant species Zinc was the most accumulated heavy metal, recording the highest level of accumulation (135.76 mg/kg) in the root of Euphorbia heterophylla. Bioaccumulation factor as expressed by total and bioavailable metal concentrations in soil indicate that all the plant species demonstrate good hyperaccumulation and phytostabilisation potential for Zn and Cd whilst 13 and 8 plant species demonstrate good phytoextraction potential for As. The translocation factor indicate that 8 plant species are good phytostabilisers for Zn, 7 plant species for Cd and 10 plant species for As. The accumulative and phytostabilisation potential of these plant species provide useful information about their selective exploitation for effective phytoremediation of the tailings dam at Chirano Gold Mine.     Mapping the stability of spatial production in integrated crop and pasture systems: Towards zonal management that accounts for both yield and livestock-landscape interactions

    Precision farming technologies are now widely applied within Australian cropping systems. However, the use of spatial monitoring technologies to investigate livestock and pasture interactions in mixed farming systems remains largely unexplored. Spatio-temporal patterns of grain yield and pasture biomass production were monitored over a four-year period on two Australian mixed farms, one in the south-west of Western Australia and the other in south-east Australia. A production stability index was calculated for two paddocks on each farm. An example is given here for one paddock from Western Australia. The stability index described here is unique in that it combines spatial and temporal variation across both cropping and pasture phases. Co-efficient of variation in yield was used as the threshold value for determining stability. Production in each stability zone was analysed statistically for consistency and correlation between the cropping and pasture phases. Results indicate that the stability index can be used in mixed farming systems to assist in management decisions and for the paddock described, spatial and temporal variation in production between crop and pasture phases was strongly correlated

    A Benefit-Cost Analysis of the Tulsa Universal Pre-K Program

    In this paper, benefits and costs are estimated for a universal pre-K program, provided by Tulsa Public Schools. Benefits are derived from estimated effects of Tulsa pre-K on retention by grade 9. Retention effects are projected to dollar benefits from future earnings increases and crime reductions. Based on these estimates, Tulsa pre-K has benefits exceeding costs by about 2-to-1. This benefit cost ratio is far less than the benefit-cost ratios (ranging from 8-to-1 to 16-to-1) for more targeted and intensive pre-K programs from the 1970s and 80s, such as Perry Preschool and the Chicago Child-Parent Center (CPC) program. Comparing benefit-cost results from different studies suggests that our more modest estimates are due to two factors: 1) smaller percentage effects of pre-K on future earnings and crime in Tulsa than in Perry and CPC, and 2) smaller baseline crime rates in Tulsa than in the Perry and CPC comparison groups

    Biodegradation of Crude Oil Polluted Soil by Co-Composting with Agricultural Wastes and Inorganic Fertilizer

    Pollution of the environment by petroleum products is inevitable due to oil production,   transportation and distribution activities.   The present study is aimed at examining the extent of bioremediation that can be achieved in crude oil polluted soil after supplementing with organic manure (poultry droppings and goat dung); inorganic fertilizer (NPK 15:15:15) and saw dust respectively. A bioremediation study was carried out on soil experimentally polluted with Bonny Light crude oil by supplementation with organic and inorganic nutrients (poultry manure, goat dung, saw dust and NPK fertilizer). The efficacy of the treatments was monitored for 112days by the measurement of total hydrocarbon utilizing bacteria load and some physico-chemical parameters. The polluted soil (Control) sample had mean bacterial counts of 8.8x104, 9.0x104, 9.2´104, 9.9x104 and 7.6x104 cfu/g respectively. Sample treated with NPK fertilizer had mean bacterial counts of 4.4x104, 4.6x104, 4.7x104, 4.9x104 and 5.2x104 cfu/g on days 0,28,56,84 and 112 respectively; sample treated with poultry manure had mean bacterial counts of 1.6x104, 1.8x104, 2.0x104, 2.4x104 and 2.7x104 cfu/g on days 0, 28,56,84 and 112 respectively; the saw dust treated sample had mean bacterial counts of 2.0x104, 2.3x104, 2.7x104, 2.9x104 and 3.0x104 cfu/g on days 0,28,56,84 and 112 respectively while that treated with goat dung had mean bacterial counts of 9.3x104, 9.5x104, 9.6x104, 9.8x104and 9.9x104 cfu/g on days 0,28,56,84 and 112 respectively.  There were differences in the physico-chemical analyses from the diverse samples. After statistical analysis (P£0.05) there was a significant difference between the different treated samples from the control. The results suggest that nutrient supplementation would be effective in the remediation of crude oil polluted soils. The potentials of various treatment options for the bioremediation of crude oil polluted soils seems to hold the most immediate solution especially for use in areas that would be adversely affected by physical or other removal methods. In this study, the reduction of oil in the treated samples is evident, polluted samples supplemented with fertilizer and poultry manure respectively proved to be the best options during the 112 days study period. This study shows that those organic supplements containing nitrogen and phosphorus have great potentials for the remediation of soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbon within a reasonable time.     Long term effects of direct drilling and conventional cultivation on the distribution of nutrients and organic c in soils of south Western Australia

    This experiment was part of a long term tillage trial designed to examine the effect of various tillage systems on the yield of wheat on a range of agricultural soils in Western Australia. A subset of results from the main experiment is presented here.This report describes the distribution of extractable P, extractable K, total N, organic C, and pH at 6 depths in the soil from 6 locations; Wongan Hills, Merredin (H) (calcic, red-brown earth), Avondale, Merredin (L) (acid, yellow earth), Esperance and Mt Barker. Three tillage systems (conventional cultivation, direct drilled with a combine, direct drilled with a triple discdrill) and 2 nitrogen rates were applied, to sites of continuously cropped wheat. Developments were monitored for a period of 9 years.The concentrations of extractable nutrients and organic C in the surface layers of the soil were generally higher with direct drilling than with conventional cultivation. Differences between treatments were generally evident within the first three years of the experiment. The effect of tillage tended to be similar at all locations except Esperance, where tillage had no effect on the concentration of extractable nutrients or organic C in the soil. Conventionally cultivated sandy and sandy clay loam soils also tended to have a slightly higher pH than direct drilled soils

    The illegal practice of combining organophosphates (OPs) with other compounds such as carbamates and pyrethroids, creating ‘streetpesticides’, is common in South Africa. These agents contain mostly unknown quantities of unregulated toxins and contribute to atypicaland unpredictable clinical presentations following human ingestion. We present such a case in a patient with intentional rodenticideingestion. The initial presentation in the emergency department was a classic cholinergic toxidrome, and clinical resolution was achievedafter provision of atropine. This was followed 12 hours later by an acute decompensation resulting from an apparent sympatheticallydriven episode of autonomic instability and acute pulmonary oedema requiring immediate respiratory and haemodynamic support. In ourdiscussion, we explore this secondary decompensation and suggest various pathophysiological explanations for this atypical clinical coursefollowing what had appeared to be OP poisoning.     Comprehensive LESA Mass Spectrometry Imaging of Intact Proteins by Integration of Cylindrical FAIMS

    The benefits of high field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) for mass spectrometry imaging of intact proteins in thin tissue sections have been demonstrated previously. In those works, a planar FAIMS device coupled with a Thermo Elite mass spectrometer was employed. Here, we have evaluated a newly introduced cylindrical FAIMS device (the FAIMS Pro) coupled with a Thermo Fusion Lumos mass spectrometer for liquid extraction surface analysis mass spectrometry imaging of intact proteins in thin tissue sections from rat testes, kidney, and brain. The method makes use of multiple FAIMS compensation values at each location (pixel) of the imaging array. A total of 975 nonredundant protein species were detected in the testes imaging dataset, 981 in the kidney dataset, and 249 in the brain dataset. These numbers represent a 7-fold (brain) and over 10-fold (testes, kidney) improvement on the numbers of proteins previously detected in LESA FAIMS imaging, and a 10-fold to over 20-fold improvement on the numbers detected without FAIMS on this higher performance mass spectrometer, approaching the same order of magnitude as those obtained in top-down proteomics of cell lines.
