Letter, Henry Ward Beecher to Gabriel Gale, March 6, 1879
This handwritten letter, dated March 6, 1879, is written from Henry Ward Beecher, an American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, and speaker, known for his support of the abolition of slavery, his emphasis on God\u27s love, and his 1875 adultery trial, to Gabriel Gale lamenting that the whole world has become a whispering gallery and how reporters routinely share things not meant to be shared. The letter is written on Brooklyn, New York stationary. The letter was found tipped into pages 278-279 of volume nine of Abraham Lincoln : A History by John G. S.F.Joseph SelonteDear SirMr Day handed me several pamphlets containing [Toms views?] upon various aspects of Evolution for which I desire to thank you heartily. They are just what I needed & I shall not content myself with reading, but shall study them. I had already your geology & am more than glad to09151[Page 2]secure these additional works – I enclose my [Route?] for several weeks to come, & you will see that I shall have leisure in the care for much reading & meditation Now, will you allow me to present for your consideration the preporation of a popular manual on Evolution – [illegible] [just the month?] after general reading public, and also for Acadamies & higher [illegible] [of learning?]The want is great, & every day growing greater – No one can adequately perform the task who is not at once a trained scientist & a [fine?] Christian Such a work would have a large circulation & I have no doubt, that advantaging terms could be made with eminent publishers.
