Time Allocations and Reward Structures for US Academic Economists from 1955â2005: Evidence from Three National Surveys
Using survey data collected in 1995, 2000 and 2005 from US academic economists, in which respondents were asked to indicate what percentage of their work time they allocate to research, teaching and service activities, and also how their departments and schools weight research, teaching and service in determining annual raises and making promotion and tenure decisions, we find these economists were allocating more time to teaching even though perceived departmental and school incentives provided a clear premium for research. The overall samples did not show major changes in their allocation of time from 1995â2005, but there were different responses at different types of schools, with increased time spent on research by faculty at doctoral schools while at masters' and baccalaureate schools more time was devoted to teaching. We use regression analysis to investigate factors that affect how different faculty members allocate their time between teaching and research. In addition to Carnegie school classifications and related school characteristics, faculty members' gender and rank were significant predictors of how economists allocate their time. Male economists, particularly among assistant professors at research universities, spent less time on teaching and more time on research than female economists.
Laparoscopy Pneumoperitoneum Fuzzy Modeling
Abstract: Gas volume to intra-peritoneal pressure fuzzy modeling for evaluating pneumoperitoneum in videolaparoscopic surgery is proposed in this paper. The proposed approach innovates in using fuzzy logic and fuzzy set theory for evaluating the accuracy of the prognosis value in order to minimize or avoid iatrogenic injuries due to the blind needle puncture. In so doing, it demonstrates the feasibility of fuzzy analysis to contribute to medicine and health care. Fuzzy systems is employed here in synergy with artificial neural network based on backpropaga tion, multilayer perceptron architecture for building up numerical functions. Experimental data employed for analysis were collected in the accomplishment of the pneumoperitoneum in a random population of patients submitted to videolaparoscopic surgeries. Numerical results indicate that the proposed fuzzy mapping for describing the relation from the intra peritoneal pressure measures as function injected gas volumes succeeded in determinining a fuzzy model for this nonlinear system when compared to the statistical model
Geophysical Methods: an Overview
Geophysics is expected to have a major role in lunar resource assessment when manned systems return to the Moon. Geophysical measurements made from a lunar rover will contribute to a number of key studies: estimating regolith thickness, detection of possible large-diameter lava tubes within maria basalts, detection of possible subsurface ice in polar regions, detection of conductive minerals that formed directly from a melt (orthomagmatic sulfides of Cu, Ni, Co), and mapping lunar geology beneath the regolith. The techniques that can be used are dictated both by objectives and by our abilities to adapt current technology to lunar conditions. Instrument size, weight, power requirements, and freedom from orientation errors are factors we have considered. Among the geophysical methods we believe to be appropriate for a lunar resource assessment are magnetics, including gradiometry, time-domain magnetic induction, ground-penetrating radar, seismic reflection, and gravimetry
Interference effects in above-threshold ionization from diatomic molecules: determining the internuclear separation
We calculate angle-resolved above-threshold ionization spectra for diatomic
molecules in linearly polarized laser fields, employing the strong-field
approximation. The interference structure resulting from the individual
contributions of the different scattering scenarios is discussed in detail,
with respect to the dependence on the internuclear distance and molecular
orientation. We show that, in general, the contributions from the processes in
which the electron is freed at one center and rescatters off the other obscure
the interference maxima and minima obtained from single-center processes.
However, around the boundary of the energy regions for which rescattering has a
classical counterpart, such processes play a negligible role and very clear
interference patterns are observed. In such energy regions, one is able to
infer the internuclear distance from the energy difference between adjacent
interference minima.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures; discussions slightly modified and an additional

Evidence for a physically bound third component in HD 150136
Context. HD150136 is one of the nearest systems harbouring an O3 star.
Although this system was for a long time considered as binary, more recent
investigations have suggested the possible existence of a third component.
Aims. We present a detailed analysis of HD 150136 to confirm the triple nature
of this system. In addition, we investigate the physical properties of the
individual components of this system. Methods. We analysed high-resolution,
high signal-to-noise data collected through multi-epoch runs spread over ten
years. We applied a disentangling program to refine the radial velocities and
to obtain the individual spectra of each star. With the radial velocities, we
computed the orbital solution of the inner system, and we describe the main
properties of the orbit of the outer star such as the preliminary mass ratio,
the eccentricity, and the orbital-period range. With the individual spectra, we
determined the stellar parameters of each star by means of the CMFGEN
atmosphere code. Results. We offer clear evidence that HD 150136 is a triple
system composed of an O3V((f\ast))-3.5V((f+)), an O5.5-6V((f)), and an
O6.5-7V((f)) star. The three stars are between 0-3 Myr old. We derive dynamical
masses of about 64, 40, and 35 Msun for the primary, the secondary and the
third components by assuming an inclination of 49{\deg}. It currently
corresponds to one of the most massive systems in our galaxy. The third star
moves with a period in the range of 2950 to 5500 d on an outer orbit with an
eccentricity of at least 0.3. This discovery makes HD 150136 the first
confirmed triple system with an O3 primary star. However, because of the long
orbital period, our dataset is not sufficient to constrain the orbital solution
of the tertiary component with high accuracy.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted at A&
The nonlinear Bernstein-Schr\"odinger equation in Economics
In this paper we relate the Equilibrium Assignment Problem (EAP), which is
underlying in several economics models, to a system of nonlinear equations that
we call the "nonlinear Bernstein-Schr\"odinger system", which is well-known in
the linear case, but whose nonlinear extension does not seem to have been
studied. We apply this connection to derive an existence result for the EAP,
and an efficient computational method.Comment: 8 pages, submitted to Lecture Notes in Computer Scienc
