A fundamental approach to adhesion: Synthesis, surface analysis, thermodynamics and mechanics
Several techniques were used to study pretreated Ti 6-4 surfaces including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron spectroscopy of chemical analysis (ESCA), and, reflectance visible spectroscopy. Each pretreatment type gave a characteristic surface morphology as seen by SEM. Elemental analysis of the Ti 6-4 surfaces was done using ESCA. Trace residual contaminants from particular chemical pretreatments were identified readily. Results indicate that reflectance visible spectroscopy using indicator dyes placed on Ti 6-4 surfaces appears to be a feasible approach to establish surface acidity. Differences in surface acidity were observed using bromthymol blue on Ti 6-4 surfaces pretreated by two different methods
An investigation of adhesive/adherend and fiber matrix interactions
Research during the report period focused on continued scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) of lap shear samples and flatwise tensile specimens and on the surface characterization of TiO2, Ti 6-4, and Ti powders with particular emphasis on their interaction with primer solutions of both polyphenylquinoxaline and LaRC-13 polyimide. The use of SEM and XPS in the analysis of Ti 6-4 adherend surfaces is described as well as differences in Ti 6-4 surface composition after different chemical pretreatments. Analysis of fractured surfaces is used to established the failure mode. The surface acidity of Ti 6-4 coupons can be established by reflectance visible spectroscopy using indicator dyes

Modeling 3-D objects with planar surfaces for prediction of electromagnetic scattering
Electromagnetic scattering analysis of objects at resonance is difficult because low frequency techniques are slow and computer intensive, and high frequency techniques may not be reliable. A new technique for predicting the electromagnetic backscatter from electrically conducting objects at resonance is studied. This technique is based on modeling three dimensional objects as a combination of flat plates where some of the plates are blocking the scattering from others. A cube is analyzed as a simple example. The preliminary results compare well with the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction and with measured data
Transverse electric scattering widths for strips-Fourier transform technique
A technique which is based on Fourier transformations is introduced for predicting scattering widths. For a strip it is shown that explicit determination of the linear current density is not necessary for bistatic or monostatic scattering width calculations. Comparisons of the predictions of the technique are made with the integral equation technique predictions, which do not require explicit evaluations of linear current densities
A search for extended radio emission from selected compact galaxy groups
Context. Studies on compact galaxy groups have led to the conclusion that a
plenitude of phenomena take place in between galaxies that form them. However,
radio data on these objects are extremely scarce and not much is known
concerning the existence and role of the magnetic field in intergalactic space.
Aims. We aim to study a small sample of galaxy groups that look promising as
possible sources of intergalactic magnetic fields; for example data from radio
surveys suggest that most of the radio emission is due to extended, diffuse
structures in and out of the galaxies. Methods. We used the Effelsberg 100 m
radio telescope at 4.85 GHz and NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) data at 1.40 GHz.
After subtraction of compact sources we analysed the maps searching for
diffuse, intergalactic radio emission. Spectral index and magnetic field
properties were derived. Results. Intergalactic magnetic fields exist in groups
HCG 15 and HCG 60, whereas there are no signs of them in HCG 68. There are also
hints of an intergalactic bridge in HCG 44 at 4.85 GHz. Conclusions.
Intergalactic magnetic fields exist in galaxy groups and their energy density
may be comparable to the thermal (X-ray) density, suggesting an important role

Assessment of the direct and indirect effects of MPP+ and dopamine on the human proteasome: implications for Parkinson's disease aetiology
Mitochondrial impairment, glutathione depletion and oxidative stress have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Parkinsonâs disease (PD), linked recently to proteasomal dysfunction. Our study analysed how these factors influence the various activities of the proteasome in human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells treated with the PD mimetics MPP+ (a complex 1 inhibitor) or dopamine. Treatment with these toxins led to dose- and time-dependent reductions in ATP and glutathione and also chymotrypsin-like and post-acidic like activities; trypsin-like activity was unaffected. Antioxidants blocked the effects of dopamine, but not MPP+, suggesting that oxidative stress was more important in the dopamine-mediated effects. With MPP+, ATP depletion was a prerequisite for loss of proteasomal activity. Thus in a dopaminergic neuron with complex 1 dysfunction both oxidative stress and ATP depletion will contribute independently to loss of proteasomal function. We show for the first time that addition of MPP+ or dopamine to purified samples of the human 20S proteasome also reduced proteasomal activities; with dopamine being most damaging. As with toxin-treated cells, chymotrypsin-like activity was most sensitive and trypsin-like activity the least sensitive. The observed differential sensitivity of the various proteasomal activities to PD mimetics is novel and its significance needs further study in human cells
Cobalt deficiency of stock in the Busselton-Augusta region.
During the past decade evidence has accumulated which indicates that large areas of country south of Busselton are deficient in cobalt. This information has been spread verbally by officers of the Department of Agriculture through personal contacts and at field days, but so far no information has been published concerning the extent and degree of the deficiency. The purpose of this article is to place on record the clinical and chemical investigations carried out since 1944
In good company: risk, security and choice in young people's drug decisions
This article draws on original empirical research with young people to question the degree to which 'individualisation of risk', as developed in the work of Beck and Giddens, adequately explains the risks young people bear and take. It draws on alternative understandings and critiques of 'risk' not to refute the notion of the reflexive individual upon which 'individualisation of risk' is based but to re-read that reflexivity in a more hermeneutic way. It explores specific risk-laden moments â young people's drug use decisions â in their natural social and cultural context of the friendship group. Studying these decisions in context, it suggests, reveals the meaning of 'risk' to be not given, but constructed through group discussion, disagreement and consensus and decisions taken to be rooted in emotional relations of trust, mutual accountability and common security. The article concludes that 'the individualisation of risk' fails to take adequate account of the significance of intersubjectivity in risk-decisions. It argues also that addressing the theoretical overemphasis on the individual bearer of risk requires not only further empirical testing of the theory but appropriate methodological reflection
