    News-Driven Business Cycles: Insights and Challenges

    There is a widespread belief that changes in expectations may be an important independent driver of economic fluctuations. The news view of business cycles offers a formalization of this perspective. In this paper we discuss mechanisms by which changes in agents' information, due to the arrival of news, can cause business cycle fluctuations driven by expectational change, and we review the empirical evidence aimed at evaluating their relevance. In particular, we highlight how the literature on news and business cycles offers a coherent way of thinking about aggregate fluctuations, while at the same time we emphasize the many challenges that must be addressed before a proper assessment of the role of news in business cycles can be established.     Thermophysical properties of the lanthanide sesquisulfides. III. Determination of Schottky and lattice heat‐capacity contributions of γ‐phase Sm2S3 and evaluation of the thermophysical properties of the γ‐phase Ln2S3 subset

    We report the experimental heat capacity of γ‐phase Sm2S3 and derived thermophysical properties at selected temperatures. The entropy, enthalpy increments, and Gibbs energy function are 21.50R, 3063R⋅K, and 11.23R at 298.15 K. The experimental heat capacity is made up of lattice and electronic (Schottky) contributions. The lattice contribution is determined for all γ‐phase lanthanide sesquisulfides (Ln2S3 ) using the Komada/Westrum model. The difference between the experimental heat capacity and the deduced lattice heat capacity is analyzed as the Schottky contribution. Comparisons are made between the calorimetric Schottky contributions and those determined based on crystal‐field electronic energy levels of Ln3+ ions in the lattice and between the Schottky contributions obtained from the empirical volumetric priority approach and from the Komada/Westrum theoretical approach.     Impacts of colistin sulfate on fecal Escherichia coli resistance and on growth performance of piglets in a post-weaning diarrhea model

    Colistin sulfate (CS) is used in Canada for the treatment of post weaning diarrhea (PWD), to overcome conventional therapeutic antibiotics failures. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of a conventional oral regimen of CS for the treatment of PWD, on the development of E. coli CS resistance and to evaluate the effect of ETEC: F4 infection on CS intestinal absorption. A total of 48 pigs were used, challenge was carried out by oral administration of 109CFU of a hemolytic ETEC: F4 strain resistant to nalidixic acid. CS was administered at a dose of 50.000 UI/kg twice a day for 5 days. Feces were examined clinically and bacteriologically before and after challenge to evaluate presence of diarrhea and E. coli fecal excretion. ETEC: F4 virulence factors were monitored and CS plasma concentrations were quantified by an HPLC-MS/MS. From one until six days after CS administration, a significant reduction in the fecal excretion of ETEC: F4, total E. coli, ETEC: F4 virulence factors and in diarrhea scores was observed in the challenged treated group compared to the challenged untreated group (p\u3c0.0001). No significant difference in growth performances was observed in treated compared to non-treated pigs (p\u3e0.71). A significant selection pressure on E. coli total population was observed following CS treatment (p\u3c0.0001). Challenge with ETEC: F4 resulted in an increase in intestinal absorption of CS. Our study is the first to demonstrate in an experimental model of PWD, that CS at a dose of 50,000 IU/kg is effective in reducing fecal excretion of E. coli. However, this regimen was associated with a selection pressure on E. coli CS resistance, and did not improve growth performance in challenged pigs. Thus, the use of this antibiotic in pig should be revised

    Flipping quantum coins

    Coin flipping is a cryptographic primitive in which two distrustful parties wish to generate a random bit in order to choose between two alternatives. This task is impossible to realize when it relies solely on the asynchronous exchange of classical bits: one dishonest player has complete control over the final outcome. It is only when coin flipping is supplemented with quantum communication that this problem can be alleviated, although partial bias remains. Unfortunately, practical systems are subject to loss of quantum data, which restores complete or nearly complete bias in previous protocols. We report herein on the first implementation of a quantum coin-flipping protocol that is impervious to loss. Moreover, in the presence of unavoidable experimental noise, we propose to use this protocol sequentially to implement many coin flips, which guarantees that a cheater unwillingly reveals asymptotically, through an increased error rate, how many outcomes have been fixed. Hence, we demonstrate for the first time the possibility of flipping coins in a realistic setting. Flipping quantum coins thereby joins quantum key distribution as one of the few currently practical applications of quantum communication. We anticipate our findings to be useful for various cryptographic protocols and other applications, such as an online casino, in which a possibly unlimited number of coin flips has to be performed and where each player is free to decide at any time whether to continue playing or not.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure

    Thermophysical properties of the lanthanide sesquisulfides. IV. Schottky contributions, magnetic, and electronic properties of ϵ‐phase Yb2S3 and Lu2S3

    The heat capacities of ϵ‐phase Yb2S3 and Lu2S3 have been determined from 6 to 350 K and their thermodynamic properties evaluated. The resolution of the Schottky and magnetic properties by evaluation of the lattice heat capacity is shown to be in accord with spectroscopically determined energy levels. The lattice heat capacity of Yb2S3 was determined by means of the Komada–Westrum phonon distribution model. Excess heat‐capacity contributions were thus evaluated and analyzed as Schottky and magnetic heat capacities. A phase transition associated with magnetic ordering was detected in the heat capacity of Yb2S3 near 7 K with an entropy content of 0.68R.
