How To (Not) Do Things with Judicial Opinions: Minding the Performative Power of Facts and Dicta
Three generations of imbeciles are enough. l These words of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes are some of the most infamous and evocative penned from behind the bench of the Supreme Court of the United States. Beyond the feelings of revulsion reading the opinion causes, the facts that Justice Holmes declared to be true and the dicta he used to bolster the Court\u27s holding in Buck v. Bell helped to create the social world we live in today and continue to affect it. Though previous scholarship has recognized the importance of acknowledging the performative power of words in the legal field, little of this scholarship has focused on judicial opinions. The existing studies of performativity and judicial opinions have primarily focused on rulings or the process of overruling and holdings. This Note uses the theory of performativity to better understand the precedential power of judicial opinions beyond their holdings. Acknowledging this power encourages judges to take greater responsibility for the parts of their opinions that do not directly state the law and undertake a more thoughtful writing process
Abelian Gauge Fluxes and Local Models in F-Theory
We analyze the Abelian gauge fluxes in local F-theory models with G_S=SU(6)
and SO(10). For the case of G_S=SO(10), there is a no-go theorem which states
that for an exotic-free spectrum, there are no solutions for U(1)^2 gauge
fluxes. We explicitly construct the U(1)^2 gauge fluxes with an exotic-free
bulk spectrum for the case of G_S=SU(6). We also analyze the conditions for the
curves supporting the given field content and discuss non-minimal spectra of

Anomaly Equations and Intersection Theory
Six-dimensional supergravity theories with N=(1,0) supersymmetry must satisfy
anomaly equations. These equations come from demanding the cancellation of
gravitational, gauge and mixed anomalies. The anomaly equations have
implications for the geometrical data of Calabi-Yau threefolds, since F-theory
compactified on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold with a section
generates a consistent six-dimensional N=(1,0) supergravity theory. In this
paper, we show that the anomaly equations can be summarized by three
intersection theory identities. In the process we also identify the geometric
counterpart of the anomaly coefficients---in particular, those of the abelian
gauge groups---that govern the low-energy dynamics of the theory. We discuss
the results in the context of investigating string universality in six

GLSMs for non-Kahler Geometries
We identify a simple mechanism by which H-flux satisfying the modified
Bianchi identity arises in garden-variety (0,2) gauged linear sigma models.
Taking suitable limits leads to effective gauged linear sigma models with
Green-Schwarz anomaly cancellation. We test the quantum-consistency of a class
of such effective theories by constructing an off-shell superconformal algebra,
providing evidence that these models run to good CFTs in the deep IR.Comment: 37 pages, Minor updates for v
The Conformal Sector of F-theory GUTs
D3-brane probes of exceptional Yukawa points in F-theory GUTs are natural
hidden sectors for particle phenomenology. We find that coupling the probe to
the MSSM yields a new class of N = 1 conformal fixed points with computable
infrared R-charges. Quite surprisingly, we find that the MSSM only weakly mixes
with the strongly coupled sector in the sense that the MSSM fields pick up
small exactly computable anomalous dimensions. Additionally, we find that
although the states of the probe sector transform as complete GUT multiplets,
their coupling to Standard Model fields leads to a calculable threshold
correction to the running of the visible sector gauge couplings which improves
precision unification. We also briefly consider scenarios in which SUSY is
broken in the hidden sector. This leads to a gauge mediated spectrum for the
gauginos and first two superpartner generations, with additional contributions

6D Effective Action of Heterotic Compactification on K3 with nontrivial Gauge Bundles
We compute the six-dimensional effective action of the heterotic string
compactified on K3 for the standard embedding and for a class of backgrounds
with line bundles and appropriate Yang-Mills fluxes. We compute the couplings
of the charged scalars and the bundle moduli as functions of the geometrical K3
moduli from a Kaluza-Klein analysis. We derive the D-term potential and show
that in the flux backgrounds U(1) vector multiplets become massive by a

Acute fibrinous and organising pneumonia: a case report and review of the literature
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Organising pneumonia is a distinct histopathological entity characterized by intra-alveolar buds of granulation tissue, called Masson bodies, which mainly comprise of activated fibroblasts and loose connective tissue. This histopathologic pattern has been described in idiopathic cases, characterizing cryptogenic organising pneumonia as well as in the context of pulmonary infection, drug-induced pneumonitis and following lung transplantation. Although distinct as a clinical and pathological entity, community organising pneumonia may present with atypical clinical and pathological features, such as intra-alveolar fillings of fibrin balls and organising tissue that resembles acute respiratory distress syndrome or diffuse alveolar damage. The latter characteristics constitute a recently described anatomoclinical entity called acute fibrinous and organising pneumonia.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>Here, we describe a rare case of acute fibrinous and organising pneumonia, in an otherwise healthy 65-year-old Greek woman who complained of dry cough, fever, weight loss and progressive dyspnoea. She had never been a smoker. Her clinical symptoms showed a rapid deterioration in the two weeks before admission, despite a course of oral antibiotics. After excluding infection and malignancy with routine laboratory tests and flexible bronchoscopy, high resolution computed tomography and video assisted thoracoscopic lung biopsy were performed. Diagnosis was based on radiological features typical of community organising pneumonia coupled with pathologic features characteristic of acute fibrinous and organising pneumonia. The patient was treated with corticosteroids and showed excellent clinical and radiological response three months after treatment initiation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Acute fibrinous and organising pneumonia is an extremely rare pathologic entity, often misdiagnosed as typical community organising pneumonia. To our knowledge, this is the seventh case of acute fibrinous and organising pneumonia in the literature, with no identifiable cause or association in a female patient, with no underlying lung disease or known exposures and with an unremarkable previous medical history. We highlight the need for careful review of lung biopsies from patients with clinical and radiologic characteristics typical of community organising pneumonia. Although it remains uncertain whether fibrin alters the favourable prognosis and treatment response of community organising pneumonia, it becomes obvious that a thorough pathologic review, apart from establishing the diagnosis of acute fibrinous and organising pneumonia, may predict a more unfavorable outcome therefore alerting the clinician to administer more aggressive and prolonged therapeutic regimens.</p
On Global Flipped SU(5) GUTs in F-theory
We construct an SU(4) spectral divisor and its factorization of types (3,1)
and (2,2) based on the construction proposed in [1]. We calculate the chiral
spectra of flipped SU(5) GUTs by using the spectral divisor construction. The
results agree with those from the analysis of semi-local spectral covers. Our
computations provide an example for the validity of the spectral divisor
construction and suggest that the standard heterotic formulae are applicable to
the case of F-theory on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau fourfold with no

Partition Functions for Maxwell Theory on the Five-torus and for the Fivebrane on S1XT5
We compute the partition function of five-dimensional abelian gauge theory on
a five-torus T5 with a general flat metric using the Dirac method of quantizing
with constraints. We compare this with the partition function of a single
fivebrane compactified on S1 times T5, which is obtained from the six-torus
calculation of Dolan and Nappi. The radius R1 of the circle S1 is set to the
dimensionful gauge coupling constant g^2= 4\pi^2 R1. We find the two partition
functions are equal only in the limit where R1 is small relative to T5, a limit
which removes the Kaluza-Klein modes from the 6d sum. This suggests the 6d
N=(2,0) tensor theory on a circle is an ultraviolet completion of the 5d gauge

Structure in 6D and 4D N=1 supergravity theories from F-theory
We explore some aspects of 4D supergravity theories and F-theory vacua that
are parallel to structures in the space of 6D theories. The spectrum and
topological terms in 4D supergravity theories correspond to topological data of
F-theory geometry, just as in six dimensions. In particular, topological
axion-curvature squared couplings appear in 4D theories; these couplings are
characterized by vectors in the dual to the lattice of axion shift symmetries
associated with string charges. These terms are analogous to the Green-Schwarz
terms of 6D supergravity theories, though in 4D the terms are not generally
linked with anomalies. We outline the correspondence between F-theory topology
and data of the corresponding 4D supergravity theories. The correspondence of
geometry with structure in the low-energy action illuminates topological
aspects of heterotic-F-theory duality in 4D as well as in 6D. The existence of
an F-theory realization also places geometrical constraints on the 4D
supergravity theory in the large-volume limit.Comment: 63 page
