Rotational velocities of A-type stars II. Measurement of vsini in the northern hemisphere
This work is the second part of the set of measurements of vsini for A-type
stars, begun by Royer et al. (2002). Spectra of 249 B8 to F2-type stars
brighter than V=7 have been collected at Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP).
Fourier transforms of several line profiles in the range 4200--4600 A are used
to derive vsini from the frequency of the first zero. Statistical analysis of
the sample indicates that measurement error mainly depends on vsini and this
relative error of the rotational velocity is found to be about 5% on average.
The systematic shift with respect to standard values from Slettebak et al.
(1975), previously found in the first paper, is here confirmed. Comparisons
with data from the literature agree with our findings: vsini values from
Slettebak et al. are underestimated and the relation between both scales
follows a linear law: vsini(new) = 1.03 vsini(old) + 7.7. Finally, these data
are combined with those from the previous paper (Royer et al. 2002), together
with the catalogue of Abt & Morrell (1995). The resulting sample includes some

Status of the Super-B factory Design
The SuperB international team continues to optimize the design of an
electron-positron collider, which will allow the enhanced study of the origins
of flavor physics. The project combines the best features of a linear collider
(high single-collision luminosity) and a storage-ring collider (high repetition
rate), bringing together all accelerator physics aspects to make a very high
luminosity of 10 cm sec. This asymmetric-energy collider
with a polarized electron beam will produce hundreds of millions of B-mesons at
the (4S) resonance. The present design is based on extremely low
emittance beams colliding at a large Piwinski angle to allow very low
without the need for ultra short bunches. Use of crab-waist
sextupoles will enhance the luminosity, suppressing dangerous resonances and
allowing for a higher beam-beam parameter. The project has flexible beam
parameters, improved dynamic aperture, and spin-rotators in the Low Energy Ring
for longitudinal polarization of the electron beam at the Interaction Point.
Optimized for best colliding-beam performance, the facility may also provide
high-brightness photon beams for synchrotron radiation applications
Spectroscopic survey of the Galaxy with Gaia I. Design and performance of the Radial Velocity Spectrometer
The definition and optimisation studies for the Gaia satellite spectrograph,
the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS), converged in late 2002 with the
adoption of the instrument baseline. This paper reviews the characteristics of
the selected configuration and presents its expected performance. The RVS is a
2.0 by 1.6 degree integral field spectrograph, dispersing the light of all
sources entering its field of view with a resolving power R=11 500 over the
wavelength range [848, 874] nm. The RVS will continuously and repeatedly scan
the sky during the 5 years of the Gaia mission. On average, each source will be
observed 102 times over this period. The RVS will collect the spectra of about
100-150 million stars up to magnitude V~17-18. At the end of the mission, the
RVS will provide radial velocities with precisions of ~2 km/s at V=15 and
\~15-20 km/s at V=17, for a solar metallicity G5 dwarf. The RVS will also
provide rotational velocities, with precisions (at the end of the mission) for
late type stars of sigma_vsini ~5 km/s at V~15 as well as atmospheric
parameters up to V~14-15. The individual abundances of elements such as Silicon
and Magnesium, vital for the understanding of Galactic evolution, will be
obtained up to V~12-13. Finally, the presence of the 862.0 nm Diffuse
Interstellar Band (DIB) in the RVS wavelength range will make it possible to

Baseline Design of the SuperB Factory Injection System

Production of highly-polarized positrons using polarized electrons at MeV energies
The Polarized Electrons for Polarized Positrons experiment at the injector of
the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility has demonstrated for the
first time the efficient transfer of polarization from electrons to positrons
produced by the polarized bremsstrahlung radiation induced by a polarized
electron beam in a high- target. Positron polarization up to 82\% have been
measured for an initial electron beam momentum of 8.19~MeV/, limited only by
the electron beam polarization. This technique extends polarized positron
capabilities from GeV to MeV electron beams, and opens access to polarized
positron beam physics to a wide community.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
New Measurement of Parity Violation in Elastic Electron-Proton Scattering and Implications for Strange Form Factors
We have measured the parity-violating electroweak asymmetry in the elastic
scattering of polarized electrons from the proton. The result is A = -15.05 +-
0.98(stat) +- 0.56(syst) ppm at the kinematic point theta_lab = 12.3 degrees
and Q^2 = 0.477 (GeV/c)^2. The measurement implies that the value for the
strange form factor (G_E^s + 0.392 G_M^s) = 0.025 +- 0.020 +- 0.014, where the
first error is experimental and the second arises from the uncertainties in
electromagnetic form factors. This measurement is the first fixed-target parity
violation experiment that used either a `strained' GaAs photocathode to produce
highly polarized electrons or a Compton polarimeter to continuously monitor the

Virtual Compton Scattering and the Generalized Polarizabilities of the Proton at Q^2=0.92 and 1.76 GeV^2
Virtual Compton Scattering (VCS) on the proton has been studied at Jefferson
Lab using the exclusive photon electroproduction reaction (e p --> e p gamma).
This paper gives a detailed account of the analysis which has led to the
determination of the structure functions P_LL-P_TT/epsilon and P_LT, and the
electric and magnetic generalized polarizabilities (GPs) alpha_E(Q^2) and
beta_M(Q^2) at values of the four-momentum transfer squared Q^2= 0.92 and 1.76
GeV^2. These data, together with the results of VCS experiments at lower
momenta, help building a coherent picture of the electric and magnetic GPs of
the proton over the full measured Q^2-range, and point to their non-trivial

Spectroscopic survey of the Galaxy with Gaia â II. The expected science yield from the Radial Velocity Spectrometer
The Gaia mission is designed as a Galaxy explorer, and will measure simultaneously, in a survey mode, the five or six phase-space parameters of all stars brighter than 20th magnitude, as well as providing a description of their astrophysical characteristics. These measurements are obtained by combining an astrometric instrument with micro-arcsecond capabilities, a photometric system giving the magnitudes and colours in 15 bands and a medium-resolution spectrograph named the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS). The latter instrument will produce spectra in the 848- to 874-nm wavelength range, with a resolving power R = 11 500, from which radial velocities, rotational velocities, atmospheric parameters and abundances can be derived. A companion paper has presented the characteristics of the RVS and its performance. The present paper details the outstanding scientific impact of this important part of the Gaia satellite on some key open questions in present-day astrophysics. The unbiased and simultaneous acquisition of multi-epoch radial velocities and individual abundances of key elements in parallel with the astrometric parameters is essential for the determination of the dynamical state and formation history of our Galaxy. Moreover, for stars brighter than V â 15, the resolving power of the RVS will give information about most of the effects that influence the position of a star in the HertzsprungâRussell diagram, placing unprecedented constraints on the age, internal structure and evolution of stars of all types. Backward electroproduction of pi0 mesons on protons in the region of nucleon resonances at four momentum transfer squared Q**2 = 1.0 GeV**2
Exclusive electroproduction of pi0 mesons on protons in the backward
hemisphere has been studied at Q**2 = 1.0 GeV**2 by detecting protons in the
forward direction in coincidence with scattered electrons from the 4 GeV
electron beam in Jefferson Lab's Hall A. The data span the range of the total
(gamma* p) center-of-mass energy W from the pion production threshold to W =
2.0 GeV. The differential cross sections sigma_T+epsilon*sigma_L, sigma_TL, and
sigma_TT were separated from the azimuthal distribution and are presented
