    Marikina flood hazard models using historical data of water level

    In this paper, ten-year historical data of water levels recorded at Sto. Niño, Marikina station of MMDA-EFCOS were analysed and processed to determine the number of times per year (annual frequency) that critical levels of the Marikina River near the Sto. Niño station were reached and for how long (duration). Probability distributions for the annual frequency and duration were then fitted to the samples obtained. Monte Carlo simulation was applied in order to generate possible realizations of the random variables. Summary statistics were then obtained from the simulated values. Finally, backtesting using historical data of water levels after the period of model development was performed to check the validity of the models. The results showed that the models obtained were reliable. The results of this study may be used to guide the local government of Marikina in planning the needed resources in order to sufficiently respond in times of flooding incidents

    Batch adsorption of toxic Cr(VI) ion from an aqueous solution using lumbang (Aleurites moluccana) activated carbon-chitosan composite crosslinked with epichlorohydrin as an adsorbent was investigated. The adsorption experiments were performed at varying pH, agitation time, initial Cr(VI) ion concentration, temperature, and adsorbent dose. At an initial concentration of 60 ppm Cr(VI), the maximum adsorption was observed at pH 3, adsorbent dose of 3 g/L, contact time of 75 min, and temperature of 30°C. Analysis of the experimental data using different kinetic models revealed that the biosorption phenomenon behaved under a pseudo second-order rate mechanism. © 2017, Oriental Scientific Publishing Company.     Synthesis and characterization of epichlorohydrin-crosslinked lumbang (Aleurites moluccana)-derived activated carbon chitosan composite as cr(VI) bioadsorbent

    Lumbang (Aleurites moluccana) activated carbon chitosan composite crosslinked with epichlorohydrin was synthesized for batch adsorption of toxic Cr(VI) ion from an aqueous solution. The synthesized biosorbent was characterized by instrumental techniques such as FTIR and SEM. The surface morphology of the adsorbent had a porous texture with round-and elliptical-shaped voids as adsorption sites for the adsorbate. Some functionalities including -OH and -NH2 groups were identified on the surfaces. The synthesized activated lumbang-biocharcoal chitosan composite crosslinked with epichlorohydrin adsorbent at the optimized conditions adsorbed 93% of Cr(VI) ion. The investigated adsorption phenomenon described a chemisorption process due to the functional groups identified and the high porosity of the adsorbent surfaces. © 2017 Bautista et al

    This study used quantitative, descriptive research through purposive sampling. The sampling population of the study comprised 45 physical therapy interns (AY 2016-2017). The research instrument used in the study is the Grading Rubric for Clinical Internship tool developed by De La Salle Health Sciences Institute\u27s College of Rehabilitation Sciences. The evaluation tool is used to assess the interns\u27 clinical performance and determine which students can consistently perform proficient and skilled tasks under the four clinical outcomes presented. Data for the study was gathered through secondary data collection or review of records. Mean, Two-sample Wilcoxon Rank-Sum (Mann-Whitney) test, standard deviation and Kruskal-Wallis Equality-of-Populations Rank Test. Results concluded that the physical therapy interns (AY 2016-2017) showed significant improvement in their clinical performance over the duration of the internship and are able to demonstrate meeting to established performance on each month rotation

    The researchers utilized a cross-sectional research design. One hundred sixty-seven (167) participants were selected by randomized sampling method. The sampling frame used was the list of all non-smoking senior high school students currently enrolled in the program for the academic year 2016-2017. Measures of association was computed using prevalence ratio to determine the relationship between the amount of time of exposure to graphic health warning labels (GHWLs) in cigarette packs and the attitude towards smoking of the study population. The variables were figured out using modified and validated self-administered questionnaires, and measures of central tendency and dispersions were used to determine general patterns and variations. The decision was to not reject the null hypothesis and concluded that there was no relationship between the two variables. Time of exposure of the Graphic Health Warning Labels had no effect on the attitude towards smoking of senior high school students from De La Salle Health Sciences Institute

    Cross-sectional study was utilized by the researchers. A total of 191 respondents were sampled using non-probability purposive sampling. In this study, a self-administered questionnaire was utilized and data was analyzed using odds ratio and Chi-square. The study concluded that the level of anxiety as measured by the GAD scale was not independent of number of hours of sleep among second year medical students. On the other hand, there was no sufficient evidence to conclude that the level of anxiety as measured by the HAM-A scale was not independent of number of hours of sleep among respondents
