Discovery and Measurement of Sleptons, Binos, and Winos with a Z'
Extensions of the MSSM could significantly alter its phenomenology at the
LHC. We study the case in which the MSSM is extended by an additional U(1)
gauge symmetry, which is spontaneously broken at a few TeV. The production
cross-section of sleptons is enhanced over that of the MSSM by the process
, so the discovery potential for
sleptons is greatly increased. The flavor and charge information in the
resulting decay, , provides a useful handle on
the identity of the LSP. With the help of the additional kinematical constraint
of an on-shell Z', we implement a novel method to measure all of the
superpartner masses involved in this channel. For certain final states with two
invisible particles, one can construct kinematic observables bounded above by
parent particle masses. We demonstrate how output from one such observable,
m_T2, can become input to a second, increasing the number of measurements one
can make with a single decay chain. The method presented here represents a new

Acetylsalicylic acid reduces the severity of dextran sodium sulfate-induced colitis and increases the formation of anti-inflammatory lipid mediators
The role of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in inflammatory bowel disease is controversial, as they have been implicated in disease aggravation. Different from other cyclooxygenase inhibitors, acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) enhances the formation of anti-inflammatory and proresolution lipoxins derived from arachidonic acid as well as resolvins from omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In this study, we examined the effect of ASA on murine dextran sodium sulfate colitis. A mouse magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocol and post mortem assessment were used to assess disease severity, and lipid metabolites were measured using liquid chromatography-coupled tandem mass spectrometry. Decreased colitis activity was demonstrated by phenotype and MRI assessment in mice treated with ASA, and confirmed in postmortem analysis. Analysis of lipid mediators showed sustained formation of lipoxin A4 and an increase of DHA-derived 17-hydroxydocosahexaenoic acid (17-HDHA) after treatment with ASA. Furthermore, in vitro experiments in RAW264.7 murine macrophages demonstrated significantly increased phagocytosis activity after incubation with 17-HDHA, supporting its proresolution effect. These results show a protective effect of ASA in a murine colitis model and could give a rationale for a careful reassessment of ASA therapy in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and particularly ulcerative colitis, possibly combined with DHA supplementation

Detecting errors and anomalies in computerized materials control and accountability databases
The Automated MC and A Database Assessment project is aimed at improving anomaly and error detection in materials control and accountability (MC and A) databases and increasing confidence in the data that they contain. Anomalous data resulting in poor categorization of nuclear material inventories greatly reduces the value of the database information to users. Therefore it is essential that MC and A data be assessed periodically for anomalies or errors. Anomaly detection can identify errors in databases and thus provide assurance of the integrity of data. An expert system has been developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory that examines these large databases for anomalous or erroneous data. For several years, MC and A subject matter experts at Los Alamos have been using this automated system to examine the large amounts of accountability data that the Los Alamos Plutonium Facility generates. These data are collected and managed by the Material Accountability and Safeguards System, a near-real-time computerized nuclear material accountability and safeguards system. This year they have expanded the user base, customizing the anomaly detector for the varying requirements of different groups of users. This paper describes the progress in customizing the expert systems to the needs of the users of the data and reports on their results
Temporary Bonding with Polydimethylglutarimide Based Lift Off Resist as a Layer Transfer Platform
Bonding of lift off resist (LOR) was performed to realize temporary wafer bonding without residue. Bonding process conditions such as spin speed, pre-bake temperature, and bonding temperature were optimized to obtain a large bonded area with high bond strength. Under optimized process conditions, a bonded area covering over 98% of the wafer surface, with a room temperature bond strength of nearly 5 J/m2 is achieved. During razor blade testing, fracture often occurs at the Si wafer. Moreover, debonding using an N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP)-based solvent left the wafer surface extremely small amount of residue. Thus, the optimized bonding processed developed in this research is suitable for a clean temporary bonding process
Predictors of outcome for severely emotionally disturbed children in treatment
Despite general agreement that severely emotionally disturbed children and adolescents are an "at risk" group, and that ongoing evaluation and research into the effectiveness of services provided for them is important, very little outcome evaluation actually takes place. The absence of well-conducted and appropriately interpreted studies is particularly notable for day or residential treatment programs, which cater for the most severely emotionally disturbed youths. This thesis outlines the main areas of conceptual, pragmatic and methodological confusion and neglect which impede progress in research in this area. It argues for plurality of data analytic strategies and research designs. It then critically reviews the reported findings about the effectiveness of day and residential treatment in specialist facilities, and the predictors of good outcomes for this treatment type. This review confirms that there is very little to guide practice. Having argued for the legitimacy of its methods and the necessity to address basic questions, the thesis reports the results of a naturalistic study based on data accumulated during a decade-long evaluative research program taking place at Arndell Child and Adolescent Unit, Sydney. The study addresses the question of what child, family and treatment variables predict outcome for 159 children and adolescents treated at this facility from 1990 to 1999. Statistically significant results with large effect size were obtained. Among the most disturbed subgroup of forty three children, (a) psychodynamic milieu-based treatment was shown to be more effective than the “empirically-validated” cognitive-behavioural treatment which superseded it in 1996, and (b) children from step-families showed better outcome than those from other family structures. Furthermore, it was found for the study sample as a whole that severe school-based problem behaviours were associated with a limited trajectory of improvement in home-based problem behaviour. These results are discussed with regard to implications for treatment, research methodology, policy and further studies
Analysis of two-point statistics of cosmic shear: III. Covariances of shear measures made easy
In recent years cosmic shear, the weak gravitational lensing effect by the
large-scale structure of the Universe, has proven to be one of the
observational pillars on which the cosmological concordance model is founded.
Several cosmic shear statistics have been developed in order to analyze data
from surveys. For the covariances of the prevalent second-order measures we
present simple and handy formulae, valid under the assumptions of Gaussian
density fluctuations and a simple survey geometry. We also formulate these
results in the context of shear tomography, i.e. the inclusion of redshift
information, and generalize them to arbitrary data field geometries. We define
estimators for the E- and B-mode projected power spectra and show them to be
unbiased in the case of Gaussianity and a simple survey geometry. From the
covariance of these estimators we demonstrate how to derive covariances of
arbitrary combinations of second-order cosmic shear measures. We then
recalculate the power spectrum covariance for general survey geometries and
examine the bias thereby introduced on the estimators for exemplary
configurations. Our results for the covariances are considerably simpler than
and analytically shown to be equivalent to the real-space approach presented in
the first paper of this series. We find good agreement with other numerical
evaluations and confirm the general properties of the covariance matrices. The
studies of the specific survey configurations suggest that our simplified
covariances may be employed for realistic survey geometries to good

Supersymmetric Decays of the Z' Boson
The decay of the Z' boson into supersymmetric particles is studied. We
investigate how these supersymmetric modes affect the current limits from the
Tevatron and project the expected sensitivities at the LHC. Employing three
representative supersymmetric Z' models, namely, E_6, U(1)_{B-L}, and the
sequential model, we show that the current limits of the Z' mass from the
Tevatron could be reduced substantially due to the weakening of the branching
ratio into leptonic pairs. The mass reach for the E_6 Z' bosons is about
1.3-1.5 TeV at the LHC-7 (1 fb^{-1}), about 2.5 - 2.6 TeV at the LHC-10 (10
fb^{-1}), and about 4.2 - 4.3 TeV at the LHC-14 (100 fb^{-1}). A similar mass
reach for the U(1)_{B-L} Z' is also obtained. We also examine the potential of
identifying various supersymmetric decay modes of the Z' boson because it may

A vehicle mounted multi-sensor array for waste site characterization
Personnel at AlliedSignal Aerospace, Kirtland Operations (formerly EG&G Energy Measurements, Kirtland Operations) and EG&G Energy Measurements, Los Alamos Operations, have successfully developed and demonstrated a number of technologies which can be applied to the environmental remediation and waste management problem. These applications have included the development of self-contained and towed remote sensing platforms and advanced signal analysis techniques for the detection and characterization of subsurface features. This presentation will provide a brief overview of applications that have been and are currently being fielded by both AlliedSignal and EG&G Energy Measurements personnel and will describe some of the ways that such technologies can and are being used for the detection and characterization of hazardous waste sites
Domain Growth Kinetics in a Cell-sized Liposome
We investigated the kinetics of domain growth on liposomes consisting of a
ternary mixture (unsaturated phospholipid, saturated phospholipid, and
cholesterol) by temperature jump. The domain growth process was monitored by
fluorescence microscopy, where the growth was mediated by the fusion of domains
through the collision. It was found that an average domain size r develops with
time t as r ~ t^0.15, indicating that the power is around a half of the
theoretical expectation deduced from a model of Brownian motion on a
2-dimensional membrane. We discuss the mechanism of the experimental scaling
behavior by considering the elasticity of the membrane
Lepton Jets in (Supersymmetric) Electroweak Processes
We consider some of the recent proposals in which weak-scale dark matter is
accompanied by a GeV scale dark sector that could produce spectacular
lepton-rich events at the LHC. Since much of the collider phenomenology is only
weakly model dependent it is possible to arrive at generic predictions for the
discovery potential of future experimental searches. We concentrate on the
production of dark states through bosons and electroweak-inos at the
Tevatron or LHC, which are the cleanest channels for probing the dark sector.
We properly take into account the effects of dark radiation and dark cascades
on the formation of lepton jets. Finally, we present a concrete definition of a
