    The economic insurance value of ecosystem resilience

    Ecosystem resilience, i.e. an ecosystem’s ability to maintain its basic functions and controls under disturbances, is often interpreted as insurance: by decreasing the probability of future drops in the provision of ecosystem services, resilience insures risk-averse ecosystem users against potential welfare losses. Using a general and stringent definition of “insurance” and a simple ecological-economic model, we derive the economic insurance value of ecosystem resilience and study how it depends on ecosystem properties, economic context, and the ecosystem user’s risk preferences. We show that (i) the insurance value of resilience is negative (positive) for low (high) levels of resilience, (ii) it increases with the level of resilience, and (iii) it is one additive component of the total economic value of resilience.ecosystem, economic value, insurance, resilience, risk, risk preferences

    We perform a model analysis to study the origins of limited resilience in ecological-economic systems. We demonstrate that the resilience properties of the ecosystem are essentially determined by the management institutions and consumers’ preferences for ecosystem services. In particular, we show that complementarity of ecosystem services in human well-being and open access of the ecosystem to profit-maximizing harvesting firms may lead to limited resilience of the ecosystem. We conclude that the role of human preferences and management institutions is not just to facilitate adaptation to, or transformation of, some natural dynamics of ecosystems.     Barriers and Challenges for Visually Impaired Students in PE - An Interview Study With Students in Austria, Germany, and the USA

    Physical education (PE) is an important part of school education worldwide, and at the same time, almost the only subject that explicitly deals with body and movement. PE is therefore of elementary importance in the upbringing of young people. This also applies to children with visual impairments. However, existing findings on participation and belonging in PE as well as on physical and motor development reveal that this group of children and adolescents is noticeably disadvantaged in this respect. Against this background, this paper aims to explore fundamental barriers and challenges across different types of schools, types of schooling, and countries from the perspective of visually impaired children. The qualitative interview study with 22 children with visual impairments at different types of schools in three countries (Austria, Germany, USA) reveals that none of the respondents could escape the power of social distinctions and related problematic and existing hierarchies. Hence, ideas of normality and associated values remain the main challenge for all of them. However, the type-forming analysis provides important insight across settings on how visually impaired children differ on this, allowing for greater sensitivity to the concerns of children with visual impairments

    ...And After That Came Me . Subjective Constructions of Social Hierarchy in Physical Education Classes Among Youth with Visual Impairments in Germany

    The aim of this study was to reconstruct subjective constructions of experiences in PE and feelings of being valued within PE classes in Germany by students with visual impairment (VI). Two female and two male students (average age: 19.25 years) participated in the study from the upper level. For the reconstruction of experiences of feeling valued, episodic interviews with a semi-structured interview guide were used. The data analysis was conducted with MAXQDA 2020 based on content-related structuring of qualitative text analysis with deductive-inductive category formation. To structure the analysis, the main category, feelings of being valued, was defined by two poles (positive feelings of being valued as opposed to bullying). As a main finding, respondents primarily reported negative feelings and experiences characterized by instances of bullying, discrimination, and physical and social isolation, perpetuated by both their peers and teachers. In search of a deeper understanding, we identified social hierarchy as an underlying structure determining the students\u27 perceived positioning within the social context and thus directing their feelings of being (de-)valued. It became evident that it is not the setting per se that determined social hierarchy, but that it is more about the concrete manifestation of social hierarchy

    Anomalous Dynamics of Translocation

    We study the dynamics of the passage of a polymer through a membrane pore (translocation), focusing on the scaling properties with the number of monomers NN. The natural coordinate for translocation is the number of monomers on one side of the hole at a given time. Commonly used models which assume Brownian dynamics for this variable predict a mean (unforced) passage time τ\tau that scales as N2N^2, even in the presence of an entropic barrier. However, the time it takes for a free polymer to diffuse a distance of the order of its radius by Rouse dynamics scales with an exponent larger than 2, and this should provide a lower bound to the translocation time. To resolve this discrepancy, we perform numerical simulations with Rouse dynamics for both phantom (in space dimensions d=1d=1 and 2), and self-avoiding (in d=2d=2) chains. The results indicate that for large NN, translocation times scale in the same manner as diffusion times, but with a larger prefactor that depends on the size of the hole. Such scaling implies anomalous dynamics for the translocation process. In particular, the fluctuations in the monomer number at the hole are predicted to be non-diffusive at short times, while the average pulling velocity of the polymer in the presence of a chemical potential difference is predicted to depend on NN.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures.     Es wird ein Verfahren zur Herstellung von Polymer-Formteilen mit wenigstens einer Tragstruktur und hieran lokal angeordneten Oberflächenstrukturen, wie Vorsprßngen, Stegen, Rippen, Randeinfassungen oder dergleichen, vorgeschlagen, indem die Tragstruktur in dem Formraum eines Formwerkzeugs angeordnet wird, in welchem die lokalen Oberflächenstrukturen an die Tragstruktur angespritzt oder angepresst werden. Um fßr eine zuverlässige und dauerhafte Verbindung der Tragstruktur mit den hieran angeformten Oberflächenstrukturen bei einer hohen Reproduzierbarkeit und kurzen Taktzeiten zu sorgen, sieht die Erfindung vor, dass in dem zum Anspritzen bzw. Anpressen der Oberflächenstrukturen an die Tragstruktur eingesetzten Formwerkzeug nur diejenigen Bereiche der Tragstruktur lokal erwärmt werden, an welche die lokalen Oberflächenstrukturen angespritzt oder angepresst werden. Die Erfindung betrifft ferner ein Formwerkzeug einer zur Durchfßhrung eines solchen Verfahrens geeigneten Vorrichtung
