Regularization independent of the noise level: an analysis of quasi-optimality

The quasi-optimality criterion chooses the regularization parameter in inverse problems without taking into account the noise level. This rule works remarkably well in practice, although Bakushinskii has shown that there are always counterexamples with very poor performance. We propose an average case analysis of quasi-optimality for spectral cut-off estimators and we prove that the quasi-optimality criterion determines estimators which are rate-optimal {\em on average}. Its practical performance is illustrated with a calibration problem from mathematical finance.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figure

Nonsequential Double Recombination in Intense Laser Fields

A second plateau in the harmonic spectra of laser-driven two-electron atoms is observed both in the numerical solution of a low-dimensional model helium atom and using an extended strong field approximation. It is shown that the harmonics well beyond the usual cut-off are due to the simultaneous recombination of the two electrons, which were emitted during different, previous half-cycles. The new cut-off is explained in terms of classical trajectories. Classical predictions and the time-frequency analysis of the ab initio quantum results are in excellent agreement. The mechanism corresponds to the inverse single photon double ionization process in the presence of a (low frequency) laser field.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX, v2 with an extended strong field approximation treatment of the process; instead, v1 describes an attosecond control scheme to enhance the proces

Momentum distributions in time-dependent density functional theory: Product phase approximation for non-sequential double ionization in strong laser fields

We investigate the possibility to deduce momentum space properties from time-dependent density functional calculations. Electron and ion momentum distributions after double ionization of a model Helium atom in a strong few-cycle laser pulse are studied. We show that, in this case, the choice of suitable functionals for the observables is considerably more important than the choice of the correlation potential in the time-dependent Kohn-Sham equations. By comparison with the solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation, the insufficiency of functionals neglecting electron correlation is demonstrated. We construct a functional of the Kohn-Sham orbitals, which in principle yields the exact momentum distributions of the electrons and the ion. The product-phase approximation is introduced, which reduces the problem of approximating this functional significantly.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, RevTeX

Arzanol, a prenylated heterodimeric phloroglucinyl pyrone, inhibits eicosanoid biosynthesis and exhibits anti-inflammatory efficacy in vivo.

Based on its capacity to inhibit in vitro HIV-1 replication in T cells and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines in monocytes, the prenylated heterodimeric phloroglucinyl α-pyrone arzanol was identified as the major anti-inflammatory and anti-viral constituent from Helichrysum italicum. We have now investigated the activity of arzanol on the biosynthesis of pro-inflammatory eicosanoids, evaluating its anti-inflammatory efficacy in vitro and in vivo. Arzanol inhibited 5-lipoxygenase (EC 7.13.11.34) activity and related leukotriene formation in neutrophils, as well as the activity of cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 (EC 1.14.99.1) and the formation of COX-2-derived prostaglandin (PG)E(2)in vitro (IC(50)=2.3-9μM). Detailed studies revealed that arzanol primarily inhibits microsomal PGE(2) synthase (mPGES)-1 (EC 5.3.99.3, IC(50)=0.4μM) rather than COX-2. In fact, arzanol could block COX-2/mPGES-1-mediated PGE(2) biosynthesis in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated human monocytes and human whole blood, but not the concomitant COX-2-derived biosynthesis of thromboxane B(2) or of 6-keto PGF(1α), and the expression of COX-2 or mPGES-1 protein was not affected. Arzanol potently suppressed the inflammatory response of the carrageenan-induced pleurisy in rats (3.6mg/kg, i.p.), with significantly reduced levels of PGE(2) in the pleural exudates. Taken together, our data show that arzanol potently inhibits the biosynthesis of pro-inflammatory lipid mediators like PGE(2)in vitro and in vivo, providing a mechanistic rationale for the anti-inflammatory activity of H. italicum, and a rationale for further pre-clinical evaluation of this novel anti-inflammatory lead

Unusual Non-Fermi Liquid Behavior of Ce1−x_{1-x}Lax_{x}Ni9_{9}Ge4_4 Analyzed in a Single Impurity Anderson Model with Crystal Field Effects

    Get PDF
CeNi9_{9}Ge4_4 exhibits unusual non-Fermi liquid behavior with the largest ever recorded value of the electronic specific heat ΔC/T≅5.5\Delta C/T \cong 5.5 JK−2^{-2}mol−1^{-1} without showing any evidence of magnetic order. Specific heat measurements show that the logarithmic increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient flattens off below 200 mK. In marked contrast, the local susceptibility Δχ\Delta\chi levels off well above 200 mK and already becomes constant below 1 K. Furthermore, the entropy reaches 2RRln2 below 20 K corresponding to a four level system. An analysis of CC and χ\chi was performed in terms of an SU(N=4)SU(N=4) single impurity Anderson model with additional crystal electric field (CEF) splitting. Numerical renormalization group calculations point to a possible consistent description of the different low temperature scales in Δc\Delta c and Δχ\Delta \chi stemming from the interplay of Kondo effect and crystal field splitting.Comment: 2 pages, 2 figure

Phase Transitions in a Two-Component Site-Bond Percolation Model

A method to treat a N-component percolation model as effective one component model is presented by introducing a scaled control variable p+p_{+}. In Monte Carlo simulations on 16316^{3}, 32332^{3}, 64364^{3} and 1283128^{3} simple cubic lattices the percolation threshold in terms of p+p_{+} is determined for N=2. Phase transitions are reported in two limits for the bond existence probabilities p=p_{=} and p≠p_{\neq}. In the same limits, empirical formulas for the percolation threshold p+cp_{+}^{c} as function of one component-concentration, fbf_{b}, are proposed. In the limit p==0p_{=} = 0 a new site percolation threshold, fbc≃0.145f_{b}^{c} \simeq 0.145, is reported.Comment: RevTeX, 5 pages, 5 eps-figure

Large-Scale Production of Monitored Drift Tube Chambers for the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer

Precision drift tube chambers with a sense wire positioning accuracy of better than 20 microns are under construction for the ATLAS muon spectrometer. 70% of the 88 large chambers for the outermost layer of the central part of the spectrometer have been assembled. Measurements during chamber construction of the positions of the sense wires and of the sensors for the optical alignment monitoring system demonstrate that the requirements for the mechanical precision of the chambers are fulfilled
