    Fast-slow asymptotic for semi-analytical ignition criteria in FitzHugh-Nagumo system

    We study the problem of initiation of excitation waves in the FitzHugh-Nagumo model. Our approach follows earlier works and is based on the idea of approximating the boundary between basins of attraction of propagating waves and of the resting state as the stable manifold of a critical solution. Here, we obtain analytical expressions for the essential ingredients of the theory by singular perturbation using two small parameters, the separation of time scales of the activator and inhibitor, and the threshold in the activator's kinetics.     Self-force of a point charge in the space-time of a symmetric wormhole

    We consider the self-energy and the self-force for an electrically charged particle at rest in the wormhole space-time. We develop general approach and apply it to two specific profiles of the wormhole throat with singular and with smooth curvature. The self-force for these two profiles is found in manifest form; it is an attractive force. We also find an expression for the self-force in the case of arbitrary symmetric throat profile.     Recreation value of a new long-distance walking track

    A large recreation value may be expected for a long-distance walking track which allows for hiking and camping in a tropical rainforest environment. When such a resource is new, sufficient data are not available for a primary study. A practical way to obtain a value estimate is by employing benefit transfer procedures. Using a travel cost analysis for the Thorsborne Trail as the transfer source, a consumer surplus estimate for the new Cannabullen Track was estimated at about Aus$300 per person per year. This value may contribute to management decisions about further development of facilities along the track and about user fees

    Nonperturbative Contributions in an Analytic Running Coupling of QCD

    In the framework of analytic approach to QCD the nonperturbative contributions in running coupling of strong interaction up to 4-loop order are obtained in an explicit form. For all Q>ΛQ>\Lambda they are shown to be represented in the form of an expansion in inverse powers of Euclidean momentum squared. The expansion coefficients are calculated for different numbers of active quark flavors nfn_f and for different number of loops taken into account. On basis of the stated expansion the effective method for precise calculation of the analytic running coupling can be developed.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX, 1 table, 1 eps figur

    Electronic correlations on a metallic nanosphere

    We consider the correlation functions in a gas of electrons moving within a thin layer on the surface of nanosize sphere. A closed form of expressions for the RKKY indirect exchange, superconducting Cooper loop and `density-density' correlation function is obtained. The systematic comparison with planar results is made, the effects of spherical geometry are outlined. The quantum coherence of electrons leads to the enhancement of all correlations for the points--antipodes on the sphere.     Dynamic properties of the spin-1/2 XY chain with three-site interactions

    We consider a spin-1/2 XY chain in a transverse (z) field with multi-site interactions. The additional terms introduced into the Hamiltonian involve products of spin components related to three adjacent sites. A Jordan-Wigner transformation leads to a simple bilinear Fermi form for the resulting Hamiltonian and hence the spin model admits a rigorous analysis. We point out the close relationships between several variants of the model which were discussed separately in previous studies. The ground-state phases (ferromagnet and two kinds of spin liquid) of the model are reflected in the dynamic structure factors of the spin chains, which are the main focus in this study. First we consider the zz dynamic structure factor reporting for this quantity a closed-form expression and analyzing the properties of the two-fermion (particle-hole) excitation continuum which governs the dynamics of transverse spin component fluctuations and of some other local operator fluctuations. Then we examine the xx dynamic structure factor which is governed by many-fermion excitations, reporting both analytical and numerical results. We discuss some easily recognized features of the dynamic structure factors which are signatures for the presence of the three-site interactions.Comment: 28 pages, 10 fugure

    Indirect RKKY interaction in any dimensionality

    We present an analytical method which enables one to find the exact spatial dependence of the indirect RKKY interaction between the localized moments via the conduction electrons for the arbitrary dimensionality nn. The corresponding momentum dependence of the Lindhard function is exactly found for any nn as well. Demonstrating the capability of the method we find the RKKY interaction in a system of metallic layers weakly hybridized to each other. Along with usual 2kF2k_F in-plane oscillations the RKKY interaction has the sign-reversal character in a direction perpendicular to layers, thus favoring the antiferromagnetic type of layers' stacking.Comment: 3 pages, REVTEX, accepted to Phys.Rev.

    Bogoliubov compensation approach in QCD and in the electroweak theory

    We describe application of Bogoliubov compensation principle to calculation of non-perturbative contribution in the electroweak theory and QCD. We obtain unique solutions of compensation equations, which impose strong restrictions on parameters of theories and on functional dependence of corresponding form-factors. We calculate value of running gauge electroweak coupling αw(MW)=0.0374\alpha_w(M_W)=0.0374, that differs from the experimental value less than by 10%. We derive effective Nambu-Jona-Lasinio interaction from fundamental QCD and express its parameters in terms of initial QCD parameters: αs\alpha_s at low-momenta and current mass of light quarks.
