An efficient hardware architecture for a neural network activation function generator
This paper proposes an efficient hardware architecture for a function generator suitable for an artificial neural network (ANN). A spline-based approximation function is designed that provides a good trade-off between accuracy and silicon area, whilst also being inherently scalable and adaptable for numerous activation functions. This has been achieved by using a minimax polynomial and through optimal placement of the approximating polynomials based on the results of a genetic algorithm. The approximation error of the proposed method compares favourably to all related research in this field. Efficient hardware multiplication circuitry is used in the implementation, which reduces the area overhead and increases the throughput
Global variability of high-nutrient low-chlorophyll regions using neural networks and wavelet coherence analysis
We examine 20 years of monthly global ocean color data and
modeling outputs of nutrients using self-organizing map (SOM) analysis to
identify characteristic spatial and temporal patterns of high-nutrient low-chlorophyll (HNLC) regions and their association with different climate
modes. The global nitrate-to-chlorophyll ratio threshold of
NO3 : Chl > 17 (mmol NO3 mg Chl−1) is estimated to be a good indicator
of the distribution limit of this unproductive biome that, on average,
covers 92 × 106 km2 (∼ 25 % of the ocean). The
trends in satellite-derived surface chlorophyll (0.6 ± 0.4 % yr−1 to 2 ± 0.4 % yr−1) suggest that HNLC regions in polar and subpolar areas
have experienced an increase in phytoplankton biomass over the last decades,
but much of this variation, particularly in the Southern Ocean, is produced
by a climate-driven transition in 2009–2010. Indeed, since 2010, the extent
of the HNLC zones has decreased at the poles (up to 8 %) and slightly
increased at the Equator (< 0.5 %). Our study finds that
chlorophyll variations in HNLC regions respond to major climate variability
signals such as the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Meridional
Overturning Circulation (MOC) at both short (2–4 years) and long (decadal)
timescales. These results suggest global coupling in the functioning of
distant biogeochemical regions.</p
The Role of Non-Covalent Interactions on Cluster Formation: Pentamer, Hexamers and Heptamer of Difluoromethane
The role of non-covalent interactions (NCIs) has broadened with the inclusion of new types of interactions and a plethora of weak donor/acceptor partners. This work illustrates the potential of chirped-pulse Fourier transform microwave technique, which has revolutionized the field of rotational spectroscopy. In particular, it has been exploited to reveal the role of NCIs’ in the molecular self-aggregation of difluoromethane where a pentamer, two hexamers and a heptamer were detected. The development of a new automated assignment program and a sophisticated computational screening protocol was essential for identifying the homoclusters in conditions of spectral congestion. The major role of dispersion forces leads to less directional interactions and more distorted structures than those found in polar clusters, although a detailed analysis demonstrates that the dominant interaction energy is the pairwise interaction. The tetramer cluster is identified as a structural unit in larger clusters, representing the maximum expression of bond between dimers
Brote de legionelosis asociado a un balneario
The start of seasonal activity at a spa in Guipuzcoa coincided with the detection of an associated legionnaire outbreak in 1998. This led to the closure of the premises and to the carrying out of opportune environmental and epidemiological studies. The latter included case-control study. A case was defined as a person who, either during his stay or in a period of 10 days thereafter, developed pneumonia or a clinical sindrome compatible with that of Pontiac fever (EIC-9).The environmental study included spa and surrounds, and samples of the sanitary water systems and all water therapy elements.12.5% of the 278 people surveyed in the Basque Autonomous Community matched the case definition. 9 had pneumonia and 27 Pontiac fever. The epidemic curve began on May 7th, peaked on May 14th and 15th, and finalized on the 20th. The risk of illness adjusted according to age, sex and tobacco consumption was associated with the length of stay at the spa (RR=118.5, 95% C.I.: 18.7-750.2) and with swimming-pool use. Serogroup 1 L. pneumophila was detected in counts above 103 ufc/l at different points in the water therapy system and in the shower in the room of one patient. The pulsed field gel eletrophoresis analysis of one of the biological samples and environmental samples allowed genotypic confirmation. The establishment was reopened to the public after emergency treatment was carried out and confirm that after 15 days no L. pneumophila had been detected in the environmental samples.En 1998 el inicio de la temporada de actividad de un balneario en Gipuzkoa coincidió con la detección de un brote de legionelosis asociado al mismo, lo cual condujo al cierre de la instalación y al estudio epidemiológico -casos y controles- y ambiental oportunos. Se definió como caso toda persona que durante su estancia en el balneario o durante los 10 días siguientes presentará neumonía o un cuadro febril compatible con fiebre de Pontiac.El estudio ambiental incluyó la inspección del balneario y entorno y muestreos de los sistemas sanitarios de agua y de los elementos de hidroterapia.De las 287 personas encuestadas de la Comunidad Autónoma Vasca, el 12.5% cumplían con la definición de caso; 9 casos presentaron neumonía y 26 fiebre de Pontiac. La curva epidémica se inició el 7 de mayo, alcanzando un pico los días 14 y 15 de mayo y finalizando el día 20. El riesgo de enfermar ajustado por edad, sexo y consumo de tabaco se asoció con la duración de la estancia en el balneario (OR=118.5, 95% I.C: 18.7-750.2) y con el uso de una piscina (OR=10.5, 95% I.C: 1.3-82.6). Se detecto L. pneumophila serogrupo1 en recuentos superiores a 103 ufc/l en diversos puntos de la red de hidroterapia y en la ducha de la habitación de uno de los enfermos. El análisis por electroforesis en campos pulsados de una muestra biológica y muestras ambientales permitió la confirmación genotípica. El establecimiento se abrió al público tras realizar un tratamiento de choque y comprobar que transcurridos 15 días no se detectó L. pneumophila en las muestras ambientales
Managing and resisting ‘degeneration’ in employee-owned businesses: a comparative study of two large retailers in Spain and the UK
Employee-owned businesses have recently enjoyed a resurgence of interest as possible ‘alternatives’ to the somewhat tarnished image of conventional investor-owned capitalist firms. Within the context of global economic crisis, such alternatives seem newly attractive. This is somewhat ironic because, for more than a century, academic literature on employee-owned businesses has been dominated by the ‘degeneration thesis’. This suggested that these businesses tend towards failure – they either fail commercially, or they relinquish their democratic characters. Bucking this trend and offering a beacon - especially in the UK - has been the commercially successful, co-owned enterprise of the John Lewis Partnership (JLP) whose virtues have seemingly been rewarded with favourable and sustainable outcomes. This paper makes comparisons between JLP and its Spanish equivalent Eroski – the supermarket group which is part of the Mondragon cooperatives. The contribution of this paper is to examine in a comparative way how the managers in JLP and Eroski have constructed and accomplished their alternative scenarios. Using longitudinal data and detailed interviews with senior managers in both enterprises it explores the ways in which two large, employee-owned, enterprises reconcile apparently conflicting principles and objectives. The paper thus puts some new flesh on the ‘regeneration thesis’
Identification of miRNAs and Their Target Genes Associated with Sunitinib Resistance in Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma Patients
Sunitinib has greatly improved the survival of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) patients in recent years. However, 20–30% of treated patients do not respond. To identify miRNAs and genes associated with a response, comparisons were made between biopsies from responder and non-responder ccRCC patients. Using integrated transcriptomic analyses, we identified 37 miRNAs and 60 respective target genes, which were significantly associated with the NF-kappa B, PI3K-Akt and MAPK pathways. We validated expression of the miRNAs (miR-223, miR-155, miR-200b, miR-130b) and target genes (FLT1, PRDM1 and SAV1) in 35 ccRCC patients. High levels of miR-223 and low levels of FLT1, SAV1 and PRDM1 were associated with worse overall survival (OS), and combined miR-223 + SAV1 levels distinguished responders from non-responders (AUC = 0.92). Using immunohistochemical staining of 170 ccRCC patients, VEGFR1 (FLT1) expression was associated with treatment response, histological grade and RECIST (Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors) score, whereas SAV1 and BLIMP1 (PRDM1) were associated with metachronous metastatic disease. Using in situ hybridisation (ISH) to detect miR-155 we observed higher tumoural cell expression in non-responders, and non-tumoural cell expression with increased histological grade. In summary, our preliminary analysis using integrated miRNA-target gene analyses identified several novel biomarkers in ccRCC patients that surely warrant further investigation

Poly(hydroxy acids) derived from the self-condensation of hydroxy acids: from polymerization to end-of-life options
[EN] Poly(hydroxy acids) have been gaining increasing attention in the search for novel sustainable materials to replace petrochemical polymers in packaging applications. Poly(hydroxy acids) are polyesters that are obtained using hydroxy acids as the starting materials, which are derived from renewable resources and biowaste. These biopolymers have attracted a lot of attention since some of them will be in the near future competitive in price to polyolefins, show excellent mechanical and barrier properties, and can be potentially recycled by physical and chemical routes. Most of the current poly(hydroxy acids) are mainly prepared by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic monomers derived from hydroxy acids. However, their direct polymerization has received much less attention, while one of the advantages of hydroxy acids resides in the presence of an electrophile and a nucleophile in a single molecule that makes them ideal A-B type monomers for self-condensation. This review focuses on the preparation of poly(hydroxy acids) by the self-condensation polymerization of hydroxy acids. Vertical distribution of fish larvae in the Canaries-African coastal transition zone, in summer
13 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables.-- Printed version published Jul 2006.This study reports the vertical distribution of fish larvae during the 1999 summer upwelling season in the Canaries-African Coastal Transition Zone (the Canaries-ACTZ). The transition between the African coastal upwelling and the typical subtropical offshore conditions is a region of intense mesoscale activity that supports a larval fish population dominated by African neritic species. During the study, the thermal stratification extended almost to the surface everywhere, and the surface mixed layer was typically shallow or non-existent. Upwelling occurred on the African shelf in a limited coastal sub-area of our sampling. The vertical distributions of the entire larval fish population, as well as of individual species, were independent of the seasonal thermocline. Fish larvae and mesozooplankton were concentrated at intermediate depths regardless of the thermocline position, probably because of its weak signature and spatial and temporal variability. Day/night vertical distributions suggest that some species did not perform diel vertical migration (DVM), whereas others showed either type I DVM or type II DVM. The opposing DVM patterns of different species compensate for each other resulting in no net DVM for the larval fish population as a whole.Fieldwork was carried out as part of the CANIGO project, funded by the EU, and of the "Pelagic (EU-CICYT 1FD97-1084)" project from the Spanish Ministry of Education and the European Union
