The Past, Present, and Future of African American Literary History

At a time when the project of literary history is eyed with increasing suspicion, two recent publications expand and complicate discussions of what constitutes the canon of African American literature: With their Cambridge History of African American Literature, Maryemma Graham and Jerry Ward have edited an impressive, comprehensive survey that will no doubt impact further discussions on the development of African American literature in the early 21st century. While its chapters offer a multiperspective view that defies any single narrative to explain 'AfAm Lit', Kenneth Warren, by asking the polemical question of What Was African American Literature?, tells quite a revisionary story: African American literature, Warren claims, was first and foremost a "representational and rhetorical strategy" (p. 9) in response to the social reality of the Jim Crow era, and therefore no longer exists. Particularly in conjunction with each other, these two publications might represent a crucial moment in African American literary studies, as many of the well-established theoretical and ideological frameworks are being renegotiated

From Ovid to Cloning: The Human Life Course in Literary Genres

The essays in Sabine Coelsch-Foisner and Sarah Herbe's collection From the Cradle to the Grave explore the interrelation between human life-course models and their representation in literary genres from the renaissance to postmodernism. The volume thus ties in with current debates around literature and science, posthumanism, and especially the emergent field of age studies. By highlighting the significance of genre in the representation of the human life course, the book makes an important contribution to this field, yet it doesn't provide a consistent theoretical framework for such discussions

Das Resultat ist, dass sich der Frust und die Ablehnung gegenüber der Theorie auf Seiten der StudentInnen erhöht und die Kluft zwischen der fortschreitend theoretisierten Literaturwissenschaft und ihrem eigenen Nachwuchs weiter wächst - eine Entwicklung, an der weder Lehrenden noch Lernenden gelegen sein dürfte. The Short Story and Projective Reading

In ihrer 2007 veröffentlichten Monographie Short Story geht Renate Brosch der Frage nach, wodurch die Leseerfahrung der Textsorte 'Kurzgeschichte' gekennzeichnet ist. Dabei kombiniert sie vor allem rezeptionstheoretische Konzepte mit narratologischen Kategorien und untersucht anhand zahlreicher literarischer Beispiele den Einfluss textueller Merkmale auf den Rezeptionsprozess von short stories. Grundannahme ist, dass sich Kurzgeschichten nur aufgrund ihrer ästhetischen Erfahrung bzw. Wirkung, insbesondere durch ihre Neigung zur Bildlichkeit, generell von längeren narrativen Formen (vor allem dem Roman) unterscheiden. Was Fragestellung und Methodik anbelangt, setzt sich die Studie somit klar vom Gros der bisherigen Forschung ab und vermag dieser zugleich neue Impulse zu verleihen.In her 2007 study, Short Story: Textsorte und Leseerfahrung, Renate Brosch poses the question of what characterises the particular reading experience ("Leseerfahrung") of the short story as a genre ("Textsorte"). Using many and varied examples, she combines concepts of reader response and reception with narratological categories and examines the influence of certain textual features on the reading process. Brosch's basic assumption is that most short stories differ from longer narrative forms (e.g. the novel) solely in terms of the aesthetic experience or effect they create, especially through their proclivity for visuality and representativeness. With regard to focus and methodology, the study therefore clearly departs from the mainstream of short story theory and could well provide new impetus for study

Das vorliegende de Gruyter-Studienbuch zum Themenkomplex Literatur und Wissen möchte eine Forschungslücke schließen: Es stellt die erste Monographie dar, die eine Zusammenschau der wesentlichen literatur- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Ansätze auf dem Gebiet liefert. Entsprechend komplex und umfangreich fällt das Ergebnis aus. Auf über 400 Seiten kartiert Klausnitzer die ‚mehrfach dimensionierten’ Relationen zwischen Literatur und Wissen, die in vier wesentliche Teilbereiche untergliedert werden: die Aufnahme von (Spezial-)Wissen in die Literatur, die Kopplungen zwischen Literatur und Wissenskulturen, die rhetorisch-poetische Verfasstheit nicht-literarischen (wissenschaftlichen) Wissens sowie die Teilhabe der Literatur an historisch spezifischen Wissenskulturen.This monograph dealing with the intricate relationship of literature and knowledge sets out to close a research gap: it is the first book-length study in German that provides a survey of the approaches to this field in literary and cultural studies. Correspondingly, the result is rather complex and voluminous. Over more than 400 pages Klausnitzer outlines the multidimensional relations between literature and knowledge, which are roughly subdivided into four aspects: the inclusion of (specialised) knowledge in literature, the interconnection of literature and cultures of knowledge, the rhetorical and poetic constitution of non-literary knowledge, and the role of literature in historically specific cultures of knowledge
