    Hybrid de novo whole-genome assembly and annotation of the model tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta

    Despite the use of Hymenolepis diminuta as a model organism in experimental parasitology, a full genome description has not yet been published. Here we present a hybrid de novo genome assembly based on complementary sequencing technologies and methods. The combination of Illumina pairedend, Illumina mate-pair and Oxford Nanopore Technology reads greatly improved the assembly of the H. diminuta genome. Our results indicate that the hybrid sequencing approach is the method of choice for obtaining high-quality data. The fnal genome assembly is 177Mbp with contig N50 size of 75kbp and a scafold N50 size of 2.3Mbp. We obtained one of the most complete cestode genome assemblies and annotated 15,169 potential protein-coding genes. The obtained data may help explain cestode gene function and better clarify the evolution of its gene families, and thus the adaptive features evolved during millennia of co-evolution with their hosts

    The paper proposes to improve a standard automatic control double-circuit system while changing a differentiator by difference of complete and incomplete inertial area models of the regulated object and also by using a PID-regulator instead of a PI-regulator and a device for internal disturbance compensations. Methods for structural and parametric optimization of the main regulator and device for internal disturbance compensations that allow to improve the regulation process have been proposed in the paper.Предлагается совершенствовать типовую двухконтурную систему автоматического регулирования путем замены дифференциатора на разность полной и неполной моделей инерционного участка объекта регулирования, а также использования ПИД-регулятора вместо ПИ-регулятора и устройства компенсации внутреннего возмущения. Предложены методы структурно-параметрической оптимизации основного регулятора и устройства компенсации внутреннего возмущения, позволяющие повысить качество регулирования

    On the use of cartographic projections in visualizing phylo-genetic tree space

    Phylogenetic analysis is becoming an increasingly important tool for biological research. Applications include epidemiological studies, drug development, and evolutionary analysis. Phylogenetic search is a known NP-Hard problem. The size of the data sets which can be analyzed is limited by the exponential growth in the number of trees that must be considered as the problem size increases. A better understanding of the problem space could lead to better methods, which in turn could lead to the feasible analysis of more data sets. We present a definition of phylogenetic tree space and a visualization of this space that shows significant exploitable structure. This structure can be used to develop search methods capable of handling much larger data sets

    Straight-Line Drawings of Protein Interactions

    This paper presents the first attempt at automatically generating drawings of protein interaction graphs. Such graphs are large and not necessarily connected. A straight-line drawing method based on the spring embedder metaphor has been found highly suitable for this task. The drawings produced exhibit edge length uniformity, even vertex distribution, and preserve graph topology well. This method is capable of generating both two- and three-dimensional layouts. A preliminary evaluation has been carried out based on a representative collection of interaction graphs

    Presenting and visualizing results on an image retrieval user interface

    The volume of images available online has increased significantly but the choices offered by image retrieval systems have not kept pace. We describe the design and evaluation of a ‘high density’ image search interface focusing on the results pages. We quantitatively and qualitatively compared image presentation on a high density interface with a traditional image search interface. Our results show that users had major problems with high-density interfaces for images due to information overload. We point to further work which could improve the user experience
