Bulk and Interfacial Shear Thinning of Immiscible Polymers
Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the shear
thinning behavior of immiscible symmetric polymer blends. The phase separated
polymers are subjected to a simple shear flow imposed by moving a wall parallel
to the fluid-fluid interface. The viscosity begins to shear thin at much lower
rates in the bulk than at the interface. The entire shear rate dependence of
the interfacial viscosity is consistent with a shorter effective chain length
that also describes the width of the interface. This is independent
of chain length and is a function only of the degree of immiscibility of
the two polymers. Changes in polymer conformation are studied as a function of
position and shear rate.Shear thinning correlates more closely with a decrease
in the component of the radius of gyration along the velocity gradient than
with elongation along the flow. At the interface, this contraction of chains is
independent of and consistent with the bulk behavior for chains of length
. The distribution of conformational changes along chains is also studied.

Statistical mechanics of permanent random atomic and molecular networks: Structure and heterogeneity of the amorphous solid state
Under sufficient permanent random covalent bonding, a fluid of atoms or small
molecules is transformed into an amorphous solid network. Being amorphous,
local structural properties in such networks vary across the sample. A natural
order parameter, resulting from a statistical-mechanical approach, captures
information concerning this heterogeneity via a certain joint probability
distribution. This joint probability distribution describes the variations in
the positional and orientational localization of the particles, reflecting the
random environments experienced by them, as well as further information
characterizing the thermal motion of particles. A complete solution, valid in
the vicinity of the amorphous solidification transition, is constructed
essentially analytically for the amorphous solid order parameter, in the
context of the random network model and approach introduced by Goldbart and
Zippelius [Europhys. Lett. 27, 599 (1994)]. Knowledge of this order parameter
allows us to draw certain conclusions about the stucture and heterogeneity of
randomly covalently bonded atomic or molecular network solids in the vicinity
of the amorphous solidification transition. Inter alia, the positional aspects
of particle localization are established to have precisely the structure
obtained perviously in the context of vulcanized media, and results are found
for the analogue of the spin glass order parameter describing the orientational

Universality and its Origins at the Amorphous Solidification Transition
Systems undergoing an equilibrium phase transition from a liquid state to an
amorphous solid state exhibit certain universal characteristics. Chief among
these are the fraction of particles that are randomly localized and the scaling
functions that describe the order parameter and (equivalently) the statistical
distribution of localization lengths for these localized particles. The purpose
of this Paper is to discuss the origins and consequences of this universality,
and in doing so, three themes are explored. First, a replica-Landau-type
approach is formulated for the universality class of systems that are composed
of extended objects connected by permanent random constraints and undergo
amorphous solidification at a critical density of constraints. This formulation
generalizes the cases of randomly cross-linked and end-linked macromolecular
systems, discussed previously. The universal replica free energy is
constructed, in terms of the replica order parameter appropriate to amorphous
solidification, the value of the order parameter is obtained in the liquid and
amorphous solid states, and the chief universal characteristics are determined.
Second, the theory is reformulated in terms of the distribution of local static
density fluctuations rather than the replica order parameter. It is shown that
a suitable free energy can be constructed, depending on the distribution of
static density fluctuations, and that this formulation yields precisely the
same conclusions as the replica approach. Third, the universal predictions of
the theory are compared with the results of extensive numerical simulations of
randomly cross-linked macromolecular systems, due to Barsky and Plischke, and

Single molecule study of a processivity clamp sliding on DNA
Using solution based single molecule spectroscopy, we study the motion of the polIII {beta}-subunit DNA sliding clamp ('{beta}-clamp') on DNA. Present in all cellular (and some viral) forms of life, DNA sliding clamps attach to polymerases and allow rapid, processive replication of DNA. In the absence of other proteins, the DNA sliding clamps are thought to 'freely slide' along the DNA; however, the abundance of positively charged residues along the inner surface may create favorable electrostatic contact with the highly negatively charged DNA. We have performed single-molecule measurements on a fluorescently labeled {beta}-clamp loaded onto freely diffusing plasmids annealed with fluorescently labeled primers of up to 90 bases. We find that the diffusion constant for 1D diffusion of the {beta}-clamp on DNA satisfies D {le} 10{sup -14} cm{sup 2}/s, much slower than the frictionless limit of D = 10{sup -10} cm{sup 2}/s. We find that the {beta} clamp remains at the 3-foot end in the presence of E. coli single-stranded binding protein (SSB), which would allow for a sliding clamp to wait for binding of the DNA polymerase. Replacement of SSB with Human RP-A eliminates this interaction; free movement of sliding clamp and poor binding of clamp loader to the junction allows sliding clamp to accumulate on DNA. This result implies that the clamp not only acts as a tether, but also a placeholder
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) For Health Anxiety (Hypochondriasis): Rationale, Implementation and Case Illustration.
Recent research has shown that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) could be a useful alternative approach to the treatment of health anxiety and deserves further investigation. In this paper, we outline the rationale for using MBCT in the treatment of this condition, namely its hypothesised impact on the underlying mechanisms which maintain health anxiety, such as rumination and avoidance, hypervigilance to body sensations and misinterpretation of such sensations. We also describe some of the adaptations which were made to the MBCT protocol for recurrent depression in this trial and discuss the rationale for these adaptations. We use a case example from the trial to illustrate how MBCT was implemented and outline the experience of one of the participants who took part in an 8-week MBCT course. Finally, we detail some of the more general experiences of participants and discuss the advantages and possible limitations of this approach for this population, as well as considering what might be useful avenues to explore in future research
Relating Differently to Intrusive Images: The Impact of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) on Intrusive Images in Patients With Severe Health Anxiety (Hypochondriasis).
Recurrent distressing intrusive images are a common experience in hypochondriasis. The aim of the current study was to assess the impact of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for hypochondriasis on the occurrence and nature of distressing intrusive imagery in hypochondriasis. A semi-structured interview was used to assess intrusive imagery, and an adapted version of the Southampton Mindfulness Questionnaire (SMQ) was used to assess participants’ relationship with their intrusive images. A consecutive series of participants (N = 20) who were receiving MBCT for hypochondriasis as part of an ongoing research program were assessed prior to participating in an 8-week MBCT intervention, immediately following the intervention, and at three month follow-up. As compared to the baseline assessment, the frequency of intrusive images, the distress associated with them, and the intrusiveness of the images were all significantly reduced at the post-MBCT assessment. Participants’ adapted SMQ scores were significantly increased following the MBCT intervention, suggesting that participants’ relationship with their intrusive images had changed in that they had developed a more ‘mindful’ and compassionate response to the images when they did occur. Effect sizes from pre- to post-intervention were medium to large (Cohen’s d = 0.75 - 1.50). All treatment gains were maintained at 3 month follow-up. Results suggest that MBCT may be an effective intervention for addressing intrusive imagery in hypochondriasis
Patients with persistent medically unexplained symptoms in general practice: characteristics and quality of care
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Medically unexplained physical symptoms (MUPS) are common in general practice (GP), and are even more problematic as they become persistent. The present study examines the relationship between persistent MUPS in general practice on the one hand and quality of life, social conditions, and coping on the other hand. Additionally, it is examined how patients with persistent MUPS evaluate the quality of GP-care.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data were used from a representative survey of morbidity in Dutch general practice, in which data from the electronic medical records were extracted. A random sample of patients participated in an extensive health interview and completed self-reported measures on social isolation, coping and the quality of GP-care. Patients with persistent MUPS (N = 192) were compared with general practice patients not meeting the criteria for persistent MUPS (N = 7.314), and with a group of patients that visited the GP in comparable rates for medical diagnoses (N = 2.265). Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to control for relevant socio-demographic variables and chronic diseases.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>After adjustment for demographics and chronic diseases, patients with persistent MUPS reported more psychological distress, more functional impairment, more social isolation, and they evaluated the quality of GP-care less positive than the other two patient groups. Although the majority of MUPS patients were positive about the quality of GP-care, they more often felt that they were not taken seriously or not involved in treatment decisions, and more often reported that the GP did not take sufficient time. The three groups did not differ with respect to the statement that the GP unnecessarily explains physical problems as psychological ones.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Strengthening MUPS patients' social network and encouraging social activities may be a meaningful intervention in which the GP may play a stimulating role. To further improve MUPS patients' satisfaction with GP-care, GPs may pay extra attention to taking sufficient time when treating MUPS patients, taking the problems seriously, and involving them in treatment decisions.</p
