Developing the Quantitative Histopathology Image Ontology : A case study using the hot spot detection problem
Interoperability across data sets is a key challenge for quantitative histopathological imaging. There is a need for an ontology that can support effective merging of pathological image data with associated clinical and demographic data. To foster organized, cross-disciplinary, information-driven collaborations in the pathological imaging field, we propose to develop an ontology to represent imaging data and methods used in pathological imaging and analysis, and call it Quantitative Histopathological Imaging Ontology â QHIO. We apply QHIO to breast cancer hot-spot detection with the goal of enhancing reliability of detection by promoting the sharing of data between image analysts
Charge dynamics in the half-metallic ferromagnet CrO\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e
Infrared spectroscopy is used to investigate the electronic structure and charge carrier relaxation in crystalline films of CrO2 which is the simplest of all half-metallic ferromagnets. Chromium dioxide is a bad metal at room temperature but it has a remarkably low residual resistivity (\u3c5 \u3eΌΩ cm) despite the small spectral weight associated with free carrier absorption. The infrared measurements show that low residual resistivity is due to the collapse of the scattering rate at Ï\u3c2000 \u3ecm-1. The blocking of the relaxation channels at low v and T can be attributed to the unique electronic structure of a half-metallic ferromagnet. In contrast to other ferromagnetic oxides, the intraband spectral weight is constant below the Curie temperature
Automated System for Early Breast Cancer Detection in Mammograms
The increasing demand on mammographic screening for early breast cancer detection, and the subtlety of early breast cancer signs on mammograms, suggest an automated image processing system that can serve as a diagnostic aid in radiology clinics. We present a fully automated algorithm for detecting clusters of microcalcifications that are the most common signs of early, potentially curable breast cancer. By using the contour map of the mammogram, the algorithm circumvents some of the difficulties encountered with standard image processing methods. The clinical implementation of an automated instrument based on this algorithm is also discussed
The pharmacokinetics of nebulized nanocrystal budesonide suspension in healthy volunteers.
Nanocrystal budesonide (nanobudesonide) is a suspension for nebulization in patients with steroid-responsive pulmonary diseases such as asthma. The pharmacokinetics and safety of the product were compared to those of Pulmicort Respules. Sixteen healthy volunteers were administered nanobudesonide 0.5 and 1.0 mg, Pulmicort Respules 0.5 mg, and placebo in a four-way, randomized crossover design. All nebulized formulations were well tolerated, with no evidence of bronchospasm. Nebulization times were significantly shorter for nanobudesonide compared to Pulmicort Respules. Because of a low oral bioavailability, plasma concentration of budesonide is a good marker of lung-delivered dose. The pharmacokinetics of nanobudesonide 0.5 and 1.0 mg were approximately dose proportional with respect to Cmax, AUC(0-t), and AUC(0-infinity). Nanobudesonide 0.5 mg and Pulmicort Respules 0.5 mg exhibited similar AUCs, suggesting a similar extent of pulmonary absorption. A higher Cmax was noted with nanobudesonide 0.5 mg, and the tmax was significantly different, suggesting a more rapid rate of drug delivery of nanobudesonide 0.5 mg than Pulmicort Respules. In conclusion, nebulized nanobudesonide 0.5 mg was safe in healthy volunteers, with a similar extent of absorption as Pulmicort Respules
The FHD/ppsilon Epoch of Reionization Power Spectrum Pipeline
Epoch of Reionization data analysis requires unprecedented levels of accuracy
in radio interferometer pipelines. We have developed an imaging power spectrum
analysis to meet these requirements and generate robust 21 cm EoR measurements.
In this work, we build a signal path framework to mathematically describe each
step in the analysis, from data reduction in the FHD package to power spectrum
generation in the ppsilon package. In particular, we focus on the
distinguishing characteristics of FHD/ppsilon: highly accurate
spectral calibration, extensive data verification products, and end-to-end
error propagation. We present our key data analysis products in detail to
facilitate understanding of the prominent systematics in image-based power
spectrum analyses. As a verification to our analysis, we also highlight a
full-pipeline analysis simulation to demonstrate signal preservation and lack
of signal loss. This careful treatment ensures that the
FHD/ppsilon power spectrum pipeline can reduce radio
interferometric data to produce credible 21 cm EoR measurements.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures, accepted by PAS
Intergenerational justice of what: welfare, resources or capabilities?
An important aspect of intergenerational justice concerns the specification of a 'currency of advantage' that can be used to evaluate distributive outcomes across time. Environmental theorists have introduced several innovative currencies of justice in recent years, such as ecological space and critical natural capital. However they have often downplayed the application of established currencies (such as welfare, resources or capabilities) to issues of futurity. After exploring the merits of a number of rival currencies, it is argued that the currency of 'capabilities to function' provides a promising basis for a theory of justice that takes seriously the rights and duties of intergenerational justice
Semileptonic Hyperon Decays and CKM Unitarity
Using a technique that is not subject to first-order SU(3) symmetry breaking
effects, we determine the element of the CKM matrix from data on
semileptonic hyperon decays. We obtain =0.2250(27). This value is of
similar precision to the one derived from , but higher and in better
agreement with the unitarity requirement, .Comment: 3 pages, 1 tabl
Efficient Classical Simulation of Optical Quantum Circuits
We identify a broad class of physical processes in an optical quantum circuit
that can be efficiently simulated on a classical computer: this class includes
unitary transformations, amplification, noise, and measurements. This
simulatability result places powerful constraints on the capability to realize
exponential quantum speedups as well as on inducing an optical nonlinear
transformation via linear optics, photodetection-based measurement and
classical feedforward of measurement results, optimal cloning, and a wide range
of other processes.Comment: 4 pages, published versio
Atomic layer deposition of titanium nitride for quantum circuits
Superconducting thin films with high intrinsic kinetic inductance are of
great importance for photon detectors, achieving strong coupling in hybrid
systems, and protected qubits. We report on the performance of titanium nitride
resonators, patterned on thin films (9-110 nm) grown by atomic layer
deposition, with sheet inductances of up to 234 pH/square. For films thicker
than 14 nm, quality factors measured in the quantum regime range from 0.4 to
1.0 million and are likely limited by dielectric two-level systems.
Additionally, we show characteristic impedances up to 28 kOhm, with no
significant degradation of the internal quality factor as the impedance
increases. These high impedances correspond to an increased single photon
coupling strength of 24 times compared to a 50 Ohm resonator, transformative
for hybrid quantum systems and quantum sensing.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures including supplemental material
