The effect of exercise on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism in adolescents and young adults

    Get PDF
The studies described in this thesis were undertaken to examine the effects of exercise, particularly intermittent games activity, on fasting lipid and lipoprotein concentrations and postprandial lipaemia in adolescents and young adults. In order to be confident of the measurements made in the experimental studies described in this thesis it was necessary to investigate the reliability and criterion-validity of some of the techniques used in these studies. Therefore preliminary work was undertaken which compared the use of two different analysers (Reflotron and Cobas Mira Plus) to determine postprandial lipoprotein concentrations in venous and capillary blood. Triacylglycerol (TAG), glucose and total cholesterol concentrations measured from capillary whole blood using the Reflotron were on average 2% higher and 5% and 13.4% lower respectively, than those measured 10 venous plasma using the Cobas Mira Plus. The purpose of this study was to compare two pedagogical methods, active learning and passive instruction, to determine which is more useful in helping students to achieve the learning outcomes in a one-hour research skills instructional session

Clostridium difficile Infection and Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Review

The incidence of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) has significantly increased in the last decade in the United States adding to the health care burden of the country. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have a higher prevalence of CDI and worse outcomes. In the past, the traditional risk factors for CDI were exposure to antibiotics and hospitalizations in elderly people. Today, it is not uncommon to diagnose CDI in a pregnant women or young adult who has no risk factors. C. difficile can be detected at the initial presentation of IBD, during a relapse or in asymptomatic carriers. It is important to keep a high index of suspicion for CDI in IBD patients and initiate prompt treatment to minimize complications. We summarize here the changing epidemiology, pathogenesis, risk factors, clinical features, and treatment of CDI in IBD

Name Games: Literacy and Play in the Prekindergarten Classroom

Teachers and researchers have found that having writing materials in all play centers in early childhood classrooms makes it easy for children to experience and work with print as they play with names. Children’s interest in their own names can be used as a tool for increasing their awareness of and experiences with print awareness and writing

Increasing the Depth of the Recruitment Pool for Future Women Academic Leaders: Should We Begin with Medical School Electives?

    Get PDF
A 2002 report from the AAMC Project Implementation Committee indicated, “The pool from which to recruit women academic leaders remains shallow” (Bickel, et al., 2002). Since hen, much attention has been focused on improving conditions for women at the faculty level. Yet, few studies address the possibility that the medical school experience could impact the initial depth in this recruitment pool. Is there a trend in medical school that may be negatively impacting women’s success in pursuing a career in academia? Residents Report on the Importance of an Undergraduate End of Life Interclerkship

Does the perceived value of a third year End of Life (EOL) Interclerkship change after medical students complete their first year of residency? Several research studies indicate students’ perceptions about specific learning experiences change after graduating from medical school. The value that medical students put on their education of end of life issues increases after they leave medical school. This finding highlights the importance of teaching end of life issues to undergraduate medical students.
