Narrow band amplification of light carrying orbital angular momentum
We report on the amplification of an optical vortex beam carrying orbital
angular momentum via induced narrow Raman gain in an ensemble of cold cesium
atoms. A 20\% single-pass Raman gain of a weak vortex signal field is observed
with a spectral width of order of 1 MHz, much smaller than the natural width,
demonstrating that the amplification process preserves the phase structure of
the vortex beam. The gain is observed in the degenerated two-level system
associated with the hyperfine transition of cesium. Our experimental observations are explained
with a simple theoretical model based on a three-level system
interacting coherently with the weak Laguerre-Gauss field and a strong coupling
field, including an incoherent pumping rate between the two degenerate

Spatial entanglement of paired photons generated in cold atomic ensembles
Cold atomic ensembles can mediate the generation of entanglement between
pairs of photons. Photons with specific directions of propagation are detected,
and the entanglement can reside in any of the degrees of freedom that describe
the whole quantum state of the photons: polarization, spatial shape or
frequency. We show that the direction of propagation of the generated photons
determines the spatial quantum state of the photons and therefore, the amount
of entanglement generated. When photons generated in different directions are
combined, this spatial distinguishing information can degrade the quantum

Polarization squeezing of light by single passage through an atomic vapor
We have studied relative-intensity fluctuations for a variable set of
orthogonal elliptic polarization components of a linearly polarized laser beam
traversing a resonant Rb vapor cell. Significant polarization squeezing
at the threshold level (-3dB) required for the implementation of several
continuous variables quantum protocols was observed. The extreme simplicity of
the setup, based on standard polarization components, makes it particularly

HBF4 Catalysed Nucleophilic Substitutions of Propargylic Alcohols
The activity of HBF4 (aqueous solution) as a catalyst in propargylation reactions is presented. Diverse types of nucleophiles were employed in order to form new C–O, C–N and C–C bonds in technical acetone and in air. Good to excellent yields and good chemoselectivities were obtained using low acid loading (typically 1 mol-%) under simple reaction conditions
Magnetometer suitable for Earth field measurement based on transient atomic response
We describe the development of a simple atomic magnetometer using Rb
vapor suitable for Earth magnetic field monitoring. The magnetometer is based
on time-domain determination of the transient precession frequency of the
atomic alignment around the measured field. A sensitivity of 1.5 nT/
is demonstrated on the measurement of the Earth magnetic field in the
laboratory. We discuss the different parameters determining the magnetometer
precision and accuracy and predict a sensitivity of 30 pT/Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
