    The cluster environments of radio loud quasars

    We have carried out multi-colour imaging of the fields of a statistically complete sample of low-frequency selected radio loud quasars at 0.6<z<1.1, in order to determine the characteristics of their environments. The largest radio sources are located in the field, and smaller steep-spectrum sources are more likely to be found in richer environments, from compact groups through to clusters. This radio-based selection (including source size) of high redshift groups and clusters is a highly efficient method of detecting rich environments at these redshifts.     Teachers’ experiences of an introductory coaching training workshop in Scotland: An interpretative phenomenological analysis

    Objectives: This study sought to explore teachers’ experiences of a coaching psychology intervention — an introductory coaching training workshop that included a positive psychology intervention and episodes of narrative-collaborative group coaching. Design: A qualitative design was applied to explore the participants’ experiences. The data was analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Method: The study took place in Scotland, where revised teaching standards require school leaders to use coaching skills. The participants were five teachers who had attended the workshop. Data collection was through semi-structured interviews. Results: Two main themes emerged from the analysis. The first theme, ‘Learning with others — the value of collaboration’, had two sub-themes: ‘Working with a partner made it real’ and ‘Feeling part of the group’. The second theme, ‘Reflection — the value of time to think’ had three sub-themes: ‘Myself as coach and coachee’, ‘Coaching and other people’, and ‘Making plans to start coaching and sharing’. Conclusions: The participants reported that their learning was enhanced by collaborating with others and having time for reflection. The limitations of the study are discussed and areas for future research are proposed

    The stransverse mass, MT2, in special cases

    This document describes some special cases in which the stransverse mass, MT2, may be calculated by non-iterative algorithms. The most notable special case is that in which the visible particles and the hypothesised invisible particles are massless -- a situation relevant to its current usage in the Large Hadron Collider as a discovery variable, and a situation for which no analytic answer was previously known. We also derive an expression for MT2 in another set of new (though arguably less interesting) special cases in which the missing transverse momentum must point parallel or anti parallel to the visible momentum sum. In addition, we find new derivations for already known MT2 solutions in a manner that maintains manifest contralinear boost invariance throughout, providing new insights into old results.     SUSY and Dark Matter Constraints from the LHC

    The ability of the LHC to make statements about the dark matter problem is considered, with a specific focus on supersymmetry. After reviewing the current strategies for supersymmetry searches at the LHC (in both CMS and ATLAS), some key ATLAS studies are used to demonstrate how one could establish that SUSY exists before going on to measure the relic density of a neutralino WIMP candidate.     Infrared Signature of the Superconducting State in Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4)

    We measured the far infrared reflectivity of two superconducting Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) films above and below Tc. The reflectivity in the superconducting state increases and the optical conductivity drops at low energies, in agreement with the opening of a (possibly) anisotropic superconducting gap. The maximum energy of the gap scales roughly with Tc as 2 Delta_{max} / kB Tc ~ 4.7. We determined absolute values of the penetration depth at 5 K as lambda_{ab} = (3300 +/- 700) A for x = 0.15 and lambda_{ab} = (2000 +/- 300) A for x = 0.17. A spectral weight analysis shows that the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum rule is satisfied at conventional low energy scales \~ 4 Delta_{max}.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
