Synthesis of 2,4-Disubstituted Pyrimidines of Possible Biological Interest

The synthesis of 2,4-disubstituted pyrimidine derivatives is described. The synthetic route involved the addition reaction of lithiated intermediates, mostly heterocycles, to position 4 of 2-chloropyrimidine to give a dihydropyrimidine intermediate which was oxidized back to a pyrimidine. This was followed by nucleophilic aromatic substitution with various amines of the chlorine in the position 2. A number of compounds were prepared which showed binding towards various serotonin receptors in preliminary biological evaluation

Testing the limits of international society? Trust, AUKUS and Indo-Pacific security

When Australia reneged on a AUD$90 billion submarine contract with France in 2021 as it joined AUKUS, a new trilateral military partnership between Australia, the UK and the US, it was accused of lying and breaching France\u27s trust. This perceived act of betrayal not only led to a deterioration in the diplomatic relationship between Australia and France, but it also drew attention to the consequences of violating the norm of pacta sunt servanda—agreements must be kept. Although it is recognized that breaches of trust undermine relationships, what has been underexplored is how a violation of norms can also undermine the presumption of trust in international society more broadly. Focusing on how Australia broke its contract with France after it joined AUKUS, this article argues that Australia\u27s conduct not only harmed its relationship with France, but it also led the European Union (EU) to raise questions about how much to trust AUKUS partners as it engages in the Indo-Pacific region. It posits that adherence to international norms is important for developing trust between states in international society and has the potential to facilitate cooperation and enhance security in the complex Indo-Pacific region and beyond

LASR-Guided Stellar Photometric Variability Subtraction: The Linear Algorithm For Significance Reduction

We develop a technique for removing stellar variability in the light curves of $\delta$-Scuti and similar stars. Our technique, which we name the Linear Algorithm for Significance Reduction (LASR), subtracts oscillations from a time series by minimizing their statistical significance in frequency space. We demonstrate that LASR can subtract variable signals of near-arbitrary complexity and can robustly handle close frequency pairs and overtone frequencies. We demonstrate that our algorithm performs an equivalent fit as prewhitening to the straightforward variable signal of KIC 9700322. We also show that LASR provides a better fit to seismic activity than prewhitening in the case of the complex $\delta$-Scuti KOI-976.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Road Work: Racial Profiling and Drug Interdiction on the Highway

Hypocrisy about race is hardly new in America, but the content changes. Recently the spotlight has been on racial profiling. The story of Colonel Carl Williams of the New Jersey State Police is a wellknown example. On Sunday, February 28, 1999, the Newark Star Ledger published a lengthy interview with Williams in which he talked about race and drugs: Today . . . the drug problem is cocaine or marijuana. It is most likely a minority group that\u27s involved with that. Williams condemned racial profiling - As far as racial profiling is concerned, that is absolutely not right. It never has been condoned in the State Police and it never will be condoned in the State Police - but he said that the illegal drug trade is ethnically balkanized: If you\u27re looking at the methamphetamine market, that seems to be controlled by motorcycle gangs, which are basically predominantly white. If you\u27re looking at heroin and stuff like that, your involvement there is more or less Jamaicans. Hours later, still on Sunday, Governor Christine Todd Whitman fired Williams from his job as superintendent of the New Jersey State Police because his comments . . . are inconsistent with our efforts to enhance public confidence in the State Poiice. Six months later Colonel Williams sued the state for damages, arguing (among other claims) that his statements about race and drugs reflected well-known facts, and pointing out that the United States Office of National Drug Control Policy website told visitors that in Trenton, New Jersey, crack dealers are predominantly African-American males, powder cocaine dealers are predominantly Latino, heroin traffickers are mostly Latinos, and the marijuana market is controlled by Jamaicans

Executive function in first-episode schizophrenia

BACKGROUND: We tested the hypothesis that schizophrenia is primarily a frontostriatal disorder by examining executive function in first-episode patients. Previous studies have shown either equal decrements in many cognitive domains or specific deficits in memory. Such studies have grouped test results or have used few executive measures, thus, possibly losing information. We, therefore, measured a range of executive ability with tests known to be sensitive to frontal lobe function. METHODS: Thirty first-episode schizophrenic patients and 30 normal volunteers, matched for age and NART IQ, were tested on computerized test of planning, spatial working memory and attentional set shifting from the Cambridge Automated Neuropsychological Test Battery. Computerized and traditional tests of memory were also administered for comparison. RESULTS: Patients were worse on all tests but the profile was non-uniform. A componential analysis indicated that the patients were characterized by a poor ability to think ahead and organize responses but an intact ability to switch attention and inhibit prepotent responses. Patients also demonstrated poor memory, especially for free recall of a story and associate learning of unrelated word pairs. CONCLUSIONS: In contradistinction to previous studies, schizophrenic patients do have profound executive impairments at the beginning of the illness. However, these concern planning and strategy use rather than attentional set shifting, which is generally unimpaired. Previous findings in more chronic patients, of severe attentional set shifting impairment, suggest that executive cognitive deficits are progressive during the course of schizophrenia. The finding of severe mnemonic impairment at first episode suggests that cognitive deficits are not restricted to one cognitive domain
