Professional nursesâ perception of their clinical teaching role at a rural hospital in Lesotho
Background. Nursing education institutions in Lesotho face an increasing number of enrolments owing to a high demand for professional nurses to work in the community. Enrolments have doubled during the last 3 years, without an increase in teaching resources or staff. Professional nurses in the wards are expected to mentor students and teach the clinical elements of nursing while continuing with their day-to-day clinical duties. Furthermore, professional nurses in Lesotho have not been trained for this clinical teaching role.Objective. To explore the perceptions of professional nurses with regard to their clinical teaching role in the development of competent nurses.Methods. A qualitative study was undertaken at a rural hospital in Lesotho. Data were gathered by conducting semi-structured interviews with professionalnurses. Interview transcripts were coded and emerging themes identified. Data saturation was reached after eight interview transcripts were analysed.Results. Four themes representing the perceptions of the professional nurses emerged in the analysis: (i) the clinical teaching role; (ii) the complexities of clinical teaching; (iii) learners have their issues; and (iv) making it work.Conclusion. Professional nurses understand and appreciate their educationalrole in the development of competent nurses. This clinical teaching role is performed in difficult circumstances, including administrative challenges, limited resources and staff shortages, while maintaining clinical responsibilities. Despite these challenges, the nurses have remained resilient and solution focused. Nursing education institutions should re-orientate professional nurses with regard to current trends and principles of nursing education to enhance their clinical teaching role
Systems, interactions and macrotheory
A significant proportion of early HCI research was guided by one very clear vision: that the existing theory base in psychology and cognitive science could be developed to yield engineering tools for use in the interdisciplinary context of HCI design. While interface technologies and heuristic methods for behavioral evaluation have rapidly advanced in both capability and breadth of application, progress toward deeper theory has been modest, and some now believe it to be unnecessary. A case is presented for developing new forms of theory, based around generic âsystems of interactors.â An overlapping, layered structure of macro- and microtheories could then serve an explanatory role, and could also bind together contributions from the different disciplines. Novel routes to formalizing and applying such theories provide a host of interesting and tractable problems for future basic research in HCI
Sky cover from MFRSR observations
The diffuse all-sky surface irradiances measured at two nearby wavelengths in the visible spectral range and their modeled clear-sky counterparts are the main components of a new method for estimating the fractional sky cover of different cloud types, including cumuli. The performance of this method is illustrated using 1-min resolution data from a ground-based Multi-Filter Rotating Shadowband Radiometer (MFRSR). The MFRSR data are collected at the US Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility (ACRF) Southern Great Plains (SGP) site during the summer of 2007 and represent 13 days with cumuli. Good agreement is obtained between estimated values of the fractional sky cover and those provided by a well-established independent method based on broadband observations
A rapid and low-cost DNA extraction method for isolating Escherichia coli DNA from animal stools
The price of commercial DNA extraction methods makes the routine use of polymerase chain reaction amplification (PCR) based methods rather costly for scientists in developing countries. A guanidium thiocayante-based DNA extraction method was investigated in this study for the isolation of Escherichia coli (E. coli) DNA from goat, chicken, pig, cow and human stool samples. Two versions of the lysis buffer, with and without _-casein, were tested to alleviate PCR inhibition associated with DNA isolated from stool samples. Results obtained show that, this method using the lysis buffer containing _-casein, produces PCR ready DNA at a fraction of the cost of commercial DNA extraction kits & copy; 2011 Academic Journals
Interplay of Peltier and Seebeck effects in nanoscale nonlocal spin valves
We have experimentally studied the role of thermoelectric effects in
nanoscale nonlocal spin valve devices. A finite element thermoelectric model is
developed to calculate the generated Seebeck voltages due to Peltier and Joule
heating in the devices. By measuring the first, second and third harmonic
voltage response non locally, the model is experimentally examined. The results
indicate that the combination of Peltier and Seebeck effects contributes
significantly to the nonlocal baseline resistance. Moreover, we found that the
second and third harmonic response signals can be attributed to Joule heating
and temperature dependencies of both Seebeck coefficient and resistivity.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Thermal spin transport and spin-orbit interaction in ferromagnetic/non-magnetic metals
In this article we extend the currently established diffusion theory of
spin-dependent electrical conduction by including spin-dependent
thermoelectricity and thermal transport. Using this theory, we propose new
experiments aimed at demonstrating novel effects such as the spin-Peltier
effect, the reciprocal of the recently demonstrated thermally driven spin
injection, as well as the magnetic heat valve. We use finite-element methods to
model specific devices in literature to demonstrate our theory. Spin-orbit
effects such as anomalous-Hall, -Nernst, anisotropic magnetoresistance and
spin-Hall are also included in this model
The dicey dinner dilemma : asymmetry in predator-prey risk-taking, a broadly-applicable alternative to the life-dinner principle
RKH is grateful to both the University of St Andrews and the Perry Foundation for funding.Forty years ago, the âlifeâdinner principleâ was proposed as an example of an asymmetry that may lead prey species to experience stronger selection than their predators, thus accounting for the high frequency with which prey escape alive from interaction with a predator. This principle remains an influential concept in the scientific literature, despite several works suggesting that the concept relies on many underâappreciated assumptions and does not apply as generally as was initially proposed. Here, we present a novel model describing a very different asymmetry to that proposed in the lifeâdinner principle, but one that could apply broadly. We argue that asymmetries between the relative costs and benefits to predators and prey of selecting a risky behaviour during an extended predatorâprey encounter could lead to an enhanced likelihood of escape for the prey. Any resulting advantage to prey depends upon there being a behaviour or choice that introduces some inherent danger to both predator and prey if they adopt it, but which if the prey adopts the predator must match in order to have a chance of successful predation. We suggest that the circumstances indicated by our model could apply broadly across diverse taxa, including both risky spatial or behavioural choices.PostprintPeer reviewe
Coalescence dynamics of size-selected gold clusters studied by time-resolved transmission electron microscopy
Coalescence dynamics of size-selected gold (Au) clusters (each with nominal 923 atoms), on amorphous Si3N4 substrate at room temperature, has been studied via time-resolved transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We found that the clusters approached each other in two stages. In the first stage, the drift velocity was independent of the particle separation and could be attributed to beam-induced random motion. In the second stage, the clusters were found to jump into contact with a much higher final averaged speed. This is independent of beam dose rates and is attributed to the van der Waal attraction
Submerged in the mainstream? A case study of an immigrant learner in a New Zealand primary classroom
Immigrant children from diverse language backgrounds face not only linguistic challenges when enrolled in mainstream English-medium classrooms, but also difficulties adjusting to an unfamiliar learning community. The culture of primary school classrooms in New Zealand typically reflects conventions across three dimensions: interactional, instructional task performance and cognitive-academic development. All three dimensions are underpinned by the culturally specific discourse conventions involved in language socialisation. New learners may be helped by classmates or their teacher to understand and successfully use these conventions, but left on their own they may sink rather than swim. This is a case study of one Taiwanese 11-year old boy, 'John', who entered a New Zealand primary classroom midway through the school year. John's basic conversational ability was sound, but he did not possess the interactive classroom skills needed to operate in the new culture of learning. Selected from a wider study of the classroom, transcript data from audio-recorded excerpts of John's interactions over several months with his teacher and classmates are interpreted from perspectives derived from sociocultural and language socialisation theories. The article concludes with a brief consideration of the extent to which John constructed, or was constrained from constructing meaningful learning experiences, and suggestions for further research and reflection
SCUBA observations of the host galaxies of four dark gamma-ray bursts
We present the results of a search for submillimetre-luminous host galaxies
of optically dark gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) using the Submillimetre Common-User
Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We made
photometry measurements of the 850-micron flux at the location of four `dark
bursts', which are those with no detected optical afterglow despite rapid deep
searches, and which may therefore be within galaxies containing substantial
amounts of dust. We were unable to detect any individual source significantly.
Our results are consistent with predictions for the host galaxy population as a
whole, rather than for a subset of dusty hosts. This indicates that optically
dark GRBs are not especially associated with very submillimetre-luminous
galaxies and so cannot be used as reliable indicators of dust-enshrouded
massive star-formation activity. Further observations are required to establish
the relationship between the wider GRB host galaxy population and SCUBA
