Observation of the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the excited states of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond

The optical transition linewidth and emission polarization of single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers are measured from 5 K to room temperature. Inter-excited state population relaxation is shown to broaden the zero-phonon line and both the relaxation and linewidth are found to follow a T^5 dependence for T up to 100 K. This dependence indicates that the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect is the dominant dephasing mechanism for the NV optical transitions at low temperatures

Vapor Pressures Of Some C4 Hydrocarbons And Their Mixtures

New experimental vapor pressures for the six binary systems containing 1,3-butadlene, n-butane, trans -2-butene, and c/s-2-butene at temperatures from 278 to 358 K are reported. Relative volatilities were calculated by using the Isothermal general coexistence equation. © 1982, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved

Relative Volatilities Of The Ethane-Ethylene System From Total Pressure Measurements

    Get PDF
A new apparatus has been developed for making vapor pressure measurements on high-pressure systems. Using this equipment, we have made a large number of new total pressure measurements on the ethane-ethylene binary from 198.15 to 278.15 K. By Integration of the general coexistence equation, relative volatilities have been calculated for ethane-ethylene over the entire temperature range. © 1982, American Chemical Society. Nanoscale Torsional Optomechanics

Optomechanical transduction is demonstrated for nanoscale torsional resonators evanescently coupled to optical microdisk whispering gallery mode resonators. The on-chip, integrated devices are measured using a fully fiber-based system, including a tapered and dimpled optical fiber probe. With a thermomechanically calibrated optomechanical noise floor down to 7 fm/sqrt(Hz), these devices open the door for a wide range of physical measurements involving extremely small torques, as little as 4x10^-20 N*m.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures - Accepted to APL Oct 22nd, 2012. Associations between diurnal preference, sleep quality and externalizing behaviours: a behavioural genetic analysis

    Get PDF
Background - Certain aspects of sleep co-occur with externalizing behaviours in youth, yet little is known about these associations in adults. The present study: (1) examines the associations between diurnal preference (morningness versus eveningness), sleep quality and externalizing behaviours; (2) explores the extent to which genetic and environmental influences are shared between or are unique to these phenotypes; (3) examines the extent to which genetic and environmental influences account for these associations. Method - Questionnaires assessing diurnal preference, sleep quality and externalizing behaviours were completed by 1556 young adult twins and siblings. Results - A preference for eveningness and poor sleep quality were associated with greater externalizing symptoms [r=0.28 (95% CI 0.23–0.33) and 0.34 (95% CI 0.28–0.39), respectively]. A total of 18% of the genetic influences on externalizing behaviours were shared with diurnal preference and sleep quality and an additional 14% were shared with sleep quality alone. Non-shared environmental influences common to the phenotypes were small (2%). The association between diurnal preference and externalizing behaviours was mostly explained by genetic influences [additive genetic influence (A)=80% (95% CI 0.56–1.01)], as was the association between sleep quality and externalizing behaviours [A=81% (95% CI 0.62–0.99)]. Non-shared environmental (E) influences accounted for the remaining variance for both associations [E=20% (95% CI −0.01 to 0.44) and 19% (95% CI 0.01–0.38), respectively]. Conclusions - A preference for eveningness and poor sleep quality are moderately associated with externalizing behaviours in young adults. There is a moderate amount of shared genetic influences between the phenotypes and genetic influences account for a large proportion of the association between sleep and externalizing behaviours. Further research could focus on identifying specific genetic polymorphisms common to both sleep and externalizing behaviours

Low-temperature tapered-fiber probing of diamond NV ensembles coupled to GaP microcavities

In this work we present a platform for testing the device performance of a cavity-emitter system, using an ensemble of emitters and a tapered optical fiber. This method provides high-contrast spectra of the cavity modes, selective detection of emitters coupled to the cavity, and an estimate of the device performance in the single- emitter case. Using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond and a GaP optical microcavity, we are able to tune the cavity onto the NV resonance at 10 K, couple the cavity-coupled emission to a tapered fiber, and measure the fiber-coupled NV spontaneous emission decay. Theoretically we show that the fiber-coupled average Purcell factor is 2-3 times greater than that of free-space collection; although due to ensemble averaging it is still a factor of 3 less than the Purcell factor of a single, ideally placed center.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figure

Exactly solvable models of supersymmetric quantum mechanics and connection to spectrum generating algebra

    Get PDF
For nonrelativistic Hamiltonians which are shape invariant, analytic expressions for the eigenvalues and eigenvectors can be derived using the well known method of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Most of these Hamiltonians also possess spectrum generating algebras and are hence solvable by an independent group theoretic method. In this paper, we demonstrate the equivalence of the two methods of solution by developing an algebraic framework for shape invariant Hamiltonians with a general change of parameters, which involves nonlinear extensions of Lie algebras.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figure
