Transmission through Biased Graphene Strip
We solve the 2D Dirac equation describing graphene in the presence of a
linear vector potential. The discretization of the transverse momentum due to
the infinite mass boundary condition reduced our 2D Dirac equation to an
effective massive 1D Dirac equation with an effective mass equal to the
quantized transverse momentum. We use both a numerical Poincare Map approach,
based on space discretization of the original Dirac equation, and direct
analytical method. These two approaches have been used to study tunneling
phenomena through a biased graphene strip. The numerical results generated by
the Poincare Map are in complete agreement with the analytical results.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figure
Deforestation: Correlations, Possible Causes and Some Implications
Changes in national forest areas during 1990-2000 are contrasted with other variables to illustrate correlations and provoke discussion about possible causes. Twenty-five statistically-significant correlations (including rural population, life expectancy, GDP, literacy, commerce, agriculture, poverty and inflation) are illustrated and a statistical model suggests that good governance, alternative employment opportunities, and payments for environmental services may be effective in combating deforestation. The data suggest that a global forest convention may need to be supported by substantial and carefully-targeted development assistance to foster good governance
Klein tunneling in graphene: optics with massless electrons
This article provides a pedagogical review on Klein tunneling in graphene,
i.e. the peculiar tunneling properties of two-dimensional massless Dirac
electrons. We consider two simple situations in detail: a massless Dirac
electron incident either on a potential step or on a potential barrier and use
elementary quantum wave mechanics to obtain the transmission probability. We
emphasize the connection to related phenomena in optics, such as the
Snell-Descartes law of refraction, total internal reflection, Fabry-P\'erot
resonances, negative refraction index materials (the so called meta-materials),
etc. We also stress that Klein tunneling is not a genuine quantum tunneling
effect as it does not necessarily involve passing through a classically
forbidden region via evanescent waves. A crucial role in Klein tunneling is
played by the conservation of (sublattice) pseudo-spin, which is discussed in
detail. A major consequence is the absence of backscattering at normal
incidence, of which we give a new shorten proof. The current experimental
status is also thoroughly reviewed. The appendix contains the discussion of a
one-dimensional toy model that clearly illustrates the difference in Klein
tunneling between mono- and bi-layer graphene.Comment: short review article, 18 pages, 14 figures; v3: references added,

Coral reefs and mangroves support rich biodiversity and provide ecosystem services that range from food, recreational benefits and coastal protection services, among others. They are one of the most threatened ecosystems by urbanization processes. In this context, we developed a conceptual framework for the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services for these coastal environments. We based our workflow on two sections: “Information base” and “Governance” and use the Puerto Morelos Coastal region as a case study for coastal protection. Puerto Morelos is between two of the most touristic destinations of Mexico (Playa del Carmen and Cancun) that has experienced an increase of population in the past four decades resulting in an intensification of multiple threats to its ecosystems. We characterized the two ecosystems with a “Management Units” strategy. An expert-based ecosystem services matrix was also described in order to connect mangroves and coral reef ecosystems with the multiple beneficiaries. Then an ecosystem model (conceptual model and Global Biodiversity model) was developed. The conceptual model was useful in understanding the interplay processes between systems regarding the ecosystem service of “Coastal Protection”. The Global Biodiversity model evidenced the human-induced shifts in the biodiversity for mangrove and coral reefs ecosystems. Also, a projection for 2035 of “best” and “worst” scenarios was applied using GLOBIO3. A DPSIR conceptual framework was used to analyze environmental problems regarding ecosystem services maintenance. Finally, we evaluated a set of policies associated with these ecosystems that favor coastal protection integrity. This framework facilitates the identification of the most relevant processes and controls about the provision of coastal protection service. It can also be useful to better target management actions and as a tool to identify future management needs to tackle the challenges preventing more effective conservation of coastal environments. Search for heavy long-lived charged R-hadrons with the ATLAS detector in 3.2 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at root s=13 TeV
A search for heavy long-lived charged R-hadrons is reported using a data sample corresponding to
3.2 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large
Hadron Collider at CERN. The search is based on observables related to large ionisation losses and slow
propagation velocities, which are signatures of heavy charged particles travelling significantly slower than
the speed of light. No significant deviations from the expected background are observed. Upper limits at
95% confidence level are provided on the production cross section of long-lived R-hadrons in the mass
range from 600 GeV to 2000 GeV and gluino, bottom and top squark masses are excluded up to 1580 GeV,
805 GeV and 890 GeV, respectively
