An "in Vitro" study of polymer-based composites

    Get PDF
Structures of most tissues in the human body can be simulated with fibrous composite materials. A major problem associated with designing biocompatible composites for reconstruction of damaged or missing tissues is the ability to mimic such structures. The physical, chemical and mechanical properties of composite materials should be similar to those of the native tissue. Another very important factor of polymer-based fibrous composite materials, which can relatively easily be modified, is their surface microstructure. This surface microstructure depends on the way of preparation, type of polymer matrix and kind of reinforcement. This work was aimed to determine the biological properties of composites obtained from carbon fibres and a polymer matrix, which can be used as biomaterial in the reconstruction of cartilage tissue. Two types of samples made from short carbon fibres and two kinds of polymers were tested. The samples were prepared by casting technique. MTT tests were carried out in the presence of hFOB-1.19-line human osteoblasts and HS-5-line human fibroblasts. The results show differences in viability of living cells. Results of the work show significant differences in biocompatibility of pure polymers and composites with short carbon fibres

Oxidation and degradation of polyethylene in hip implants

    Get PDF
The infrared absorption spectra of polyethylene samples from 13 used acetabular cups of hip prostheses retrieved from patients after different periods of use were studied. The presence of carbonyl compounds was observed in exploited polyethylene samples, confirming progressive oxidative degradation of polyethylene in biological environment

The process of degradation of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) in the presence of macrophages (Mf) and the biocompatibility of the system PLLA+Mf was studied. The progress of the degradation was monitored by the measurements of polymer viscosity and IR spectra of the films as well as the concentration of the released lactic acid. The viability of macrophages and the secretion of cytokines were compared for the systems containing PLLA films immersed in macrophage suspension and macrophages cultured without the polymer. The results confirm the increase in the rate of PLLA degradation in the presence of macrophages as well as the satisfactory biocompatibility of poly(Llactic acid) and macrophage cells

Elaboration and characterization of biodegradable scaffolds from poly (L-Lactide-co-glycolide) synthesized with low-toxic zirconium acetylacetonate

Objectives: The aim of the study was to answer the questions whether poly (L-lactide-co-glycolide) synthesized with the use of zirconium acetylacetonate: (i) is less toxic in vitro than that synthesized with tin compound; (ii) is it possible to produce scaffolds from such copolymer, and (iii) how these scaffolds degrade in vitro. Methods: A human osteoblast line (Saos2) was used to verify the biocompatibility of the copolymer. Porous scaffolds were obtained via the solvent casting / particulate leaching technique. The scaffolds were characterized in terms of surface chemistry (FTIR-ATR, contact angle), microstructure (porosity, water uptake, SEM) and degradation in PBS (GPC, SEM, FTIR-ATR, mass loss). Results: The copolymer synthesized with the zirconium compound performs better in contact with osteoblasts in vitro than that synthesized with tin. Porous scaffolds from a such copolymer can be easily prepared by the solvent casting/salt leaching technique. These scaffolds, having a high open porosity (88% ± 2%) and water uptake of (630% ± 50%) maintain their dimensions and porous microstructure for 8 weeks in PBS. The scaffolds degrade in vitro, but the rate of degradation is quite low. Conclusion: The results of biological, textural, and physico-chemical properties of obtained porous material, regarding its behaviour in conditions simulating biological environment, show that it could be used as a scaffold for bone tissue engineering

Does anxiety modify sexuality of pregnant women?

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of anxiety on women’s sexuality during pregnancy. Material and methods: The prospective study involved 520 pregnant women at the age of 18–45. 168 of them were quali¬fied for the final analysis. The research tools were: a self-designed questionnaire for women and standardized STAI scale. Results: The state and trait anxiety in pregnant women was evaluated during all trimesters of pregnancy. State anxiety was stronger among women with a strong tendency to feelings of anxiety. The authors also tried to determine the correlation between women’s assessment of their relationship with the partners and its impact on state and trait anxiety during all three trimesters of pregnancy. Self assessment of relations between partners had statistically significant impact on the increase in state anxiety (p = 0.04) in multiparous women, who reported impairment of their relations with the partner, and had statistically significant impact on the increase in the trait anxiety in primiparous women (p = 0.02) and multiparous (p = 0.05) women, who reported deterioration of partnership especially in the second trimester of their pregnancy. Lower anxiety level in the second trimester contributed to the increased sexual activity. Conclusions: Anxiety level during pregnancy significantly affected the quality of sexual activity. Lower anxiety level in the second trimester contributed to the increased sexual activity

Venous aneurysm as a clinical problem. General and local complications

    Get PDF
Venous system aneurysms appear relatively rarely and are diagnosed even less frequently, especiallyif asymptomatic. Asymptomatic aneurysms are detected during duplex-Doppler studies. Symptomaticaneurysms are often life-threatening. The first part of this paper presents a literature review of this rare disease, and the second part presentsa the material of the cochort of 5 patients underwent surgical treatment due to venous aneurysm and itscomplications. There is no clear standard of treatment for venous aneurysms. The main reasons for this are relativelylow epidemiology, diversity of locations, difficulty in establishing primary and secondary aetiologies, anatomical structure, and the coexistence of concomitant diseases. Given the numerous uncertainties, several factors should be considered when deciding the next steps in treatment

Tissue factor and tissue factor pathway inhibitor in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

    Get PDF
Background. The inflammatory process in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) interferes with the normal function of respiratory lung. There is strong evidence indicating that inflammatory process in patients with COPD may activate blood coagulation. However, little is known about the role of tissue factor (TF) pathway in the coagulation system activation in COPD. Objectives. The aim of the study has been to evaluate the concentration of selected parameters of coagulation process, including TF and tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI), in plasma of patients with COPD. Patients and methods. The study included 66 patients with COPD at different stages of disease according to GOLD 2006, mean age of 60.4 years. The control group consisted of 25 healthy volunteers (non-smokers). Total TF and TFPI concentrations and other haemostatic parameters were measured using Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Results. Significantly higher concentrations of TF and TFPI (p = 0.03; p = 0.004, respectively) were observed in patients with COPD. The level of fibrinogen was also higher in the study group than in controls (p = 0.002). However, the activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) was shortened in COPD patients as compared with the control group (p = 0.0001). Conclusion. The study showed that in patients suffering from COPD, the stimulation of the tissue factor- -dependent activation of coagulation is observed.
