    Self-current induced spin-orbit torque in FeMn/Pt multilayers

    Extensive efforts have been devoted to the study of spin-orbit torque in ferromagnetic metal/heavy metal bilayers and exploitation of it for magnetization switching using an in-plane current. As the spin-orbit torque is inversely proportional to the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer, sizable effect has only been realized in bilayers with an ultrathin ferromagnetic layer. Here we demonstrate that, by stacking ultrathin Pt and FeMn alternately, both ferromagnetic properties and current induced spin-orbit torque can be achieved in FeMn/Pt multilayers without any constraint on its total thickness. The critical behavior of these multilayers follows closely three-dimensional Heisenberg model with a finite Curie temperature distribution. The spin torque effective field is about 4 times larger than that of NiFe/Pt bilayer with a same equivalent NiFe thickness. The self-current generated spin torque is able to switch the magnetization reversibly without the need for an external field or a thick heavy metal layer. The removal of both thickness constraint and necessity of using an adjacent heavy metal layer opens new possibilities for exploiting spin-orbit torque for practical applications.Comment: 28 pages, 5 figure

    Electrical transport across metal/two-dimensional carbon junctions: Edge versus side contacts

    Metal/two-dimensional carbon junctions are characterized by using a nanoprobe in an ultrahigh vacuum environment. Significant differences were found in bias voltage (V) dependence of differential conductance (dI/dV) between edge- and side-contact; the former exhibits a clear linear relationship (i.e., dI/dV \propto V), whereas the latter is characterized by a nonlinear dependence, dI/dV \propto V3/2. Theoretical calculations confirm the experimental results, which are due to the robust two-dimensional nature of the carbon materials under study.     Selection of reference genes for gene expression studies in ultraviolet B-irradiated human skin fibroblasts using quantitative real-time PCR

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Reference genes are frequently used to normalise mRNA levels between different samples. The expression level of these genes, however, may vary between tissues or cells and may change under certain circumstances. Cytoskeleton genes have served as multifunctional tools for experimental studies as reference genes. Our previous studies have demonstrated that the expression of vimentin, one cytoskeletal protein, was increased in ultraviolet B (UVB)-irradiated fibroblasts. Thus, we examined the expression of other cytoskeleton protein genes, <it>ACTB </it>(<it>actin, beta</it>), <it>TUBA1A </it>(<it>tubulin, alpha 1a</it>), and <it>TUBB1 </it>(<it>tubulin, beta 1</it>), in human dermal fibroblasts irradiated by UVB to determine which of these candidates were the most appropriate reference genes.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Quantitative real-time PCR followed by analysis with the NormFinder and geNorm software programmes was performed. The initial screening of the expression patterns demonstrated that the expression of <it>VIM </it>was suppressed after UVB irradiation at doses ≥25 mJ/cm<sup>2 </sup>and that the expression of <it>TUBA1A </it>was significantly reduced by UVB doses ≥75 mJ/cm<sup>2 </sup>in cultured human dermal fibroblasts. The analysis of the experimental data revealed <it>ACTB </it>to be the most stably expressed gene, followed by <it>GAPDH </it>(<it>aglyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase</it>), under these experimental conditions. By contrast, <it>VIM </it>was found to be the least stable gene. The combination of <it>ACTB </it>and <it>TUBB1 </it>was revealed to be the gene pair that introduced the least systematic error into the data normalisation.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The data herein provide evidence that <it>ACTB </it>and <it>TUBB1 </it>are suitable reference genes in human skin fibroblasts irradiated by UVB, whereas <it>VIM </it>and <it>TUBA1A </it>are not and should therefore be excluded as reference genes in any gene expression studies involving UVB-irradiated human skin fibroblasts.</p

    HIV Incidence among Men Who Have Sex with Men in China: A Meta-Analysis of Published Studies

    Men who have sex with men (MSM) have now become one of the priority populations for prevention and control of HIV pandemic in China. Information of HIV incidence among MSM is important to describe the spreading of the infection and predict its trends in this population. We reviewed the published literature on the incidence of HIV infection among MSM in China.We identified relevant studies by use of a comprehensive strategy including searches of Medline and two Chinese electronic publication databases from January 2005 to September 2010. Point estimate of random effects incidence with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) of HIV infection was carried out using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. Subgroup analyses were examined separately, stratified by study design and geographic location.Twelve studies were identified, including three cohort studies and nine cross-sectional studies. The subgroup analyses revealed that the sub-overall incidence estimates were 3.5% (95% CI, 1.7%-5.3%) and 6.7% (95% CI, 4.8%-8.6%) for cohort and cross-sectional studies, respectively (difference between the sub-overalls, Q = 5.54, p = 0.02); and 8.3% (95% CI, 6.9%-9.7%) and 4.6% (95% CI, 2.4%-6.9%) for studies in Chongqing and other areas, respectively (difference between the sub-overalls, Q = 7.58, p<0.01). Syphilis infection (RR = 3.33, p<0.001), multiple sex partnerships (RR = 2.81, p<0.001), and unprotected receptive anal intercourse in the past six months (RR = 3.88, p = 0.007) represented significant risk for HIV seroconversion.Findings from this meta-analysis indicate that HIV incidence is substantial in MSM in China. High incidence of HIV infection and unique patterns of sexual risk behaviors in this population serve as a call for action that should be answered with the innovative social and public health intervention strategies, and development of biological prevention strategies
