Mitigating Risks of Ochratoxin A Contamination in Oats

    Get PDF
Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a toxic metabolite produced by several species of fungal genera Penicillium and Aspergillus. The major OTA producer in temperate regions (i.e. U.S., Canada, Europe) is Penicillium verrucosum. Oat (Avena sativa), like any other cereal grain, can be contaminated with OTA when storage conditions are favorable for fungal growth. The presence of OTA exceeding the European Union maximum limit of 3 ppb in processed food has been reported in some samples of oat-based breakfast cereals from the US. The use of oat genotypes with limited OTA accumulation would be an effective way to reduce risks of OTA contamination in oat based products. The objectives of this study were to: 1) determine the frequently of P. verrucosum in oat grain produced in South Dakota, and 2) develop a methodology to screen oat genotypes for OTA accumulation. Grain samples from twelve oat cultivars grown at five locations in South Dakota from 2014 to 2016 were analyzed for the presence of P. verrucosum by direct plating on Dichloran Yeast Extract Glycerol Agar (DYSG) medium. Twenty-three out of the 360 samples (6.3%) evaluated had a very low percentage (0-16%) of kernels with P. verrucosum contamination. Three experiments with oat grain inoculated with P. verrucosum were carried out to study the effect of water activity, temperature, isolates of P. verrucosum, genotypes and time after incubation on OTA production. All these factors except genotype were found to have significant effects on OTA production by P. verrucosum in oats. A water activity of 0.90, temperature of 22.5°C, and P. verrucosum isolate C1136-1 were found to be highly favorable for OTA production in grain and could be used to assess varietal differences in grain OTA accumulation

    THE SUGAR BUSH- MAPLE SYRUP

    Get PDF
Maple syrup is the syrup made from the xylem sap of trees like sugar maple, red maple, black maple and some other maple species. From one of nature\u27s true phenomena the process of maple syrup production gets started. During spring when the nights are very cold, the maple tree absorbs water from the soil. In the daytime due to warmer temperature a pressure is created which pushes the water again to the tree bottom which helps in easy collection of the maple syrup which is very precious actually. It takes almost 12 to 20 days to collect the sap depending on the area / region. KEYWORDS: Maple syrup; Spring, Warmer temperature

Food color is used as a food additive. A color additive is any dye, Pigment or substance. Mainly two type of food colors are used in food Industry: Natural and Artificial. There are 26 colors which are permitted to be used in food. A few Natural colors mainly used are Annatto, turmeric, Lycopene, Beet root and caramel etc. Lycopene is processed from Tomatoes and widely used. In this short communication we wanted to create a awareness about synthetic lycopene and their properties. KEYWORDS: Annatto, Turmeric, Lycopene, Beet root; Caramel

“Your unthought of Harry”: Political Legitimacy and the Economy of Honor in Shakespeare\u27s Henriad

    Get PDF
Shakespeare’s Henriad delves into questions of divine authority, political process, and the role of class in society. Most importantly, however, the text tracks the shifts in leadership and kingly identity. Richard II paints the portrait of a king infatuated with his own divinity. Richard’s journey from anointed king to deposed mortal captures the dissolution of his fantasy of invincibility. Inciting Richard’s demise, Henry IV effectively disturbs the passive obedience which the king’s subjects maintain; in doing so, the kingship begins to shift away from divine authority, moving into a vacuum of rebellion and civil conflict. Meanwhile, the previously profligate Prince Hal turns towards his duties; in proving himself to his father, he begins to accumulate honor, redeeming himself as a capable heir. Hal’s ascension as Henry V and his subsequent success as a king provides a stark contrast to the discontent during Richard’s reign. As the presence of divinity recedes, the theme of honor appears more frequently throughout the Henriad. Prince Hal views honor as an external commodity which can be accumulated by an individual. Honor, as presented by Henry V, seemingly converts an intrinsic trait or virtue into a commodity with economic value, allowing for the establishment of his own political legitimacy. Using the plays in the Henriad as my primary texts, I intend to examine this political and ideological transition by connecting Richard\u27s divine right to Hal\u27s construction of an economy of honor
