Mental Health Workout: Lifting Stigma
Mental illness affects one out of every five Americans between the ages 13-18, and it is estimated that two-thirds of these individuals will not seek treatment due to the stigma associated with having a mental illness or mental health issue (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Access to information and the ability to talk openly without fear will aid in creating a stigma free future. The goal of this project is to supply high school students in the San Francisco Bay Area with information regarding the stigma associated with mental health and mental illness via videos that will be used as deliverables, which will aid in starting a conversation or dialogue
Prevention of opportunistic infections in HIV infection by pentoxiphylline
Background & objectives: Levels of tumour necrosis factor (TNF) are increased in patients with HIV infection leading to increased apoptosis and reduced CD4 cell life. Pentoxiphylline is a TNF inhibitor with properties that might make it useful for the treatment of HIV infection. These include improved cell mediated immunity and inhibition of viral replication. We carried out this study to determine the therapeutic utility of pentoxiphylline in improving constitutional manifestations, preventing opportunistic infections and sustaining CD4 counts among asymptomatic HIV infected individuals (i.e., those with no opportunistic infection)
Acute alcoholic myopathy, rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure: A case report
A case of middle aged male who developed swelling and weakness of muscles in the lower limbs following a heavy binge of alcohol is being reported, lie had myoglobinuria and developed acute renal failure for which he was dialyzed, Acute alcoholic myopathy is not a well recognized condition and should be considered in any intoxicated patient who presents with muscle tenderness and weakness
Quantum Communication Uplink to a 3U CubeSat: Feasibility & Design
Satellites are the efficient way to achieve global scale quantum
communication (Q.Com) because unavoidable losses restrict fiber based Q.Com to
a few hundred kilometers. We demonstrate the feasibility of establishing a
Q.Com uplink with a tiny 3U CubeSat (measuring just 10X10X32 cm^3 ) using
commercial off-the-shelf components, the majority of which have space heritage.
We demonstrate how to leverage the latest advancements in nano-satellite
body-pointing to show that our 4kg CubeSat can provide performance comparable
to much larger 600kg satellite missions. A comprehensive link budget and
simulation was performed to calculate the secure key rates. We discuss design
choices and trade-offs to maximize the key rate while minimizing the cost and
development needed. Our detailed design and feasibility study can be readily
used as a template for global scale Q.Com.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables. Fixed tables and figure
Opportunistic dose amplification for proton and carbon ion therapy via capture of internally generated thermal neutrons
© 2018, The Author(s). This paper presents Neutron Capture Enhanced Particle Therapy (NCEPT), a method for enhancing the radiation dose delivered to a tumour relative to surrounding healthy tissues during proton and carbon ion therapy by capturing thermal neutrons produced inside the treatment volume during irradiation. NCEPT utilises extant and in-development boron-10 and gadolinium-157-based drugs from the related field of neutron capture therapy. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate that a typical proton or carbon ion therapy treatment plan generates an approximately uniform thermal neutron field within the target volume, centred around the beam path. The tissue concentrations of neutron capture agents required to obtain an arbitrary 10% increase in biological effective dose are estimated for realistic treatment plans, and compared to concentrations previously reported in the literature. We conclude that the proposed method is theoretically feasible, and can provide a worthwhile improvement in the dose delivered to the tumour relative to healthy tissue with readily achievable concentrations of neutron capture enhancement drugs
