    Diffraction-limited CCD imaging with faint reference stars

    By selecting short exposure images taken using a CCD with negligible readout noise we obtained essentially diffraction-limited 810 nm images of faint objects using nearby reference stars brighter than I=16 at a 2.56 m telescope. The FWHM of the isoplanatic patch for the technique is found to be 50 arcseconds, providing ~20% sky coverage around suitable reference stars.Comment: 4 page letter accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    On-board timeline validation and repair : a feasibility study

    We report on the progress and outcome of a recent ESAfunded project (MMOPS) designed to explore the feasibility of on-board reasoning about payload timelines. The project sought to examine the role of on-board timeline reasoning and the operational context into which it would fit. We framed a specification for an on-board service that fits with existing practices and represents a plausible advance within sensible constraints on the progress of operations planning. We have implemented a prototype to demonstrate the feasibility of such a system and have used it to show how science gathering operations might be improved by its deployment

Incidents and accidents can be caused by human error, by problems inherent in complex systems, or by a combination of these. Study objectives were to develop and evaluate an incident reporting system. A report form was designed eliciting a description of the incident, contextual information and contributing factors. Staff group sessions using open-ended questions, observations in the workplace and a review of earlier narratives were used to develop the report form. Three intensive care units participated in a two-month evaluation study. Feedback questionnaires were used to assess staff attitudes and understanding, project design and organization. These demonstrated a positive attitude and good understanding by more than 90% participants. Errors in communication, technique, problem recognition and charting were the predisposing factors most commonly chosen in the 128 incidents reported. Before committing the U.S. to such a large program, the Department of Energy and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration are jointly participating in an SPS Concept Development and Evaluation Program. This white paper on industrial and population relocation is part of the FY 78 preliminary evaluation of related socio-economic issues.     Sub-surface damage issues for effective fabrication of large optics

    A new ultra precision large optics grinding machine, BoX®has been developed at Cranfield University. BoX®islocated at the UK's Ultra Precision Surfaces laboratory at the OpTIC Technium. This machine offers a rapidand economic solution for grinding large off-axis aspherical and free-form optical components.This paper presents an analysis of subsurface damage assessments of optical ground materials produced usingdiamond resin bonded grinding wheels. The specific materials used, Zerodur®and ULE®are currently understudy for making extremely large telescope (ELT) segmented mirrors such as in the E-ELT project.The grinding experiments have been conducted on the BoX®grinding machine using wheels with grits sizes of76 μm, 46 μm and 25 μm. Grinding process data was collected using a Kistler dynamometer platform. Thehighest material removal rate (187.5 mm3/s) used ensures that a 1 metre diameter optic can be ground in lessthan 10 hours. The surface roughness and surface profile were measured using a Form Talysurf. The subsurfacedamage was revealed using a sub aperture polishing process in combination with an etching technique.These results are compared with the targeted form accuracy of 1 μm p-v over a 1 metre part, surface roughnessof 50-150 nm RMS and subsurface damage in the range of 2-5 μm.     Self-Consistent Response of a Galactic Disk to an Elliptical Perturbation Halo Potential

    We calculate the self-consistent response of an axisymmetric galactic disk perturbed by an elliptical halo potential of harmonic number m = 2, and obtain the net disk ellipticity. Such a potential is commonly expected to arise due to a galactic tidal encounter and also during the galaxy formation process. The self-gravitational potential corresponding to the self-consistent, non-axisymmetric density response of the disk is obtained by inversion of Poisson equation for a thin disk. This response potential is shown to oppose the perturbation potential, because physically the disk self-gravity resists the imposed potential. This results in a reduction in the net ellipticity of the perturbation halo potential in the disk plane. The reduction factor denoting this decrease is independent of the strength of the perturbation potential, and has a typical minimum value of 0.75 - 0.9 for a wide range of galaxy parameters. The reduction is negligible at all radii for higher harmonics (m > or = 3) of the halo potential. (abridged).Comment: 26 pages (LaTex- aastex style), 3 .eps figures.
