Strategic nonviolent conflict: The Montgomery Bus Boycott
Nonviolent action emerges under the conditions of recognized an unacceptable political oppression and injustice. The people, who find the situation unacceptable, develop three ways of behavior. First, they exit the situation. Second, they engage in everyday forms of resistance. Third, they participate in political action which has two aspects: institutional and non-institutional. Institutional political action comprises of the regular political activities such as voting, taking part in legislative process, and joining political parties. Non-institutional political action, on the contrary, arises as either violent action or nonviolent action. This paper examines the emergence, progress, and spread of the Montgomery Bus Boycott as one of the leading examples of the nonviolent struggles in the last century
Exploring the Meaningful Work Level of Academics in Terms of Different Variables
This study aimed to the meaningfulness of their work from their own perspective in relation to a set of variables. In this study descriptive survey design was used. In order to collect the data Meaningful Work Scale was developed and used. The participants of the study comprised of 385 academic staff members from three different public universities. To analyze the data mean, standard deviation, frequency, and one-way ANOVA were used. The results revealed that participants find their work meaningful in terms of the work itself, sense of contribution, sense of self and sense of balance in the respective order. Opinions of academics differ according to academic title, discipline on sense of self and sense of contribution dimensions. Academics at the Faculty of Medicine find their work more meaningful when compared with education, economics and administrative sciences faculties academicians in relation to the sense of contribution dimension. The professors find their work relatively more meaningful than the assistant professors both in relation to the sense of self and sense of contribution dimensions. In the context of the relation of meaningful work on motivation and job satisfaction, manageable workload, work-life balance and mentoring programs, total reward-recognition system in higher education can be recommended
EMOTIONAL AND COGNITIVE INDICATORS IN DRAWINGS OF CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: A PICTURE ANALYSIS STUDY
Pictures contain important clues about how children perceive their own world, their environment and the events they experience, how they position themselves and how they externalize. This externalization event is used as a tool to express sadness, fear, anxiety, worry or the opposite feelings such as peace, happiness, joy, love, belonging, etc., especially in individuals with special needs who cannot or do not want to express themselves verbally. Pictures of individuals with special needs are also considered as an expression of the feelings of individuals with special needs and contain important details about personality development. These pictures written by students with special needs also provide important clues about the mental development and competence of students with special needs. This study was conducted with a total of 25 children with special needs who attend a special education school and whose age range varies between 4 and 12 years. The application with children with special needs, 10 of whom are girls and 15 of whom are boys, and included in this study, covered a period of 20 weeks, and the pictures collected from children with special needs were evaluated with the semiotic analysis method. Poem Selection and Text Processing in Secondary School Turkish Textbooks
Starting at the school level, language education develops comprehension and expression skills. It is important to develop literacy skills as it is the basic way of acquiring information. Native language textbooks created with a text-based approach are an integral part of this process. Accurate, qualified, and purposefully selected texts help achieve the objectives of language education, especially comprehension. In Turkey, the Turkish language courses offered in secondary schools to develop comprehension and expression skills aim to develop both the students’ native language competencies and their higher-level cognitive skills such as critical thinking, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation along with their language skills. Since its inception in 2019, the Turkish Curriculum limits the selection of texts for textbooks to a framework that represents informative, narrative, and poetic structures. Due to the scarcity of studies on poetry and its teaching process, this study aims to determine the general view of the teaching process of poems in secondary school Turkish textbooks. Additionally, the study examines all the textbooks to be used in secondary schools in Turkey in the 2022–2023 academic year. The research model is a basic qualitative research design, and data were collected through document analysis. The analysis concluded that course books attempted to make students understand the poems in middle school Turkish textbooks, especially with open-ended questions in the process of comprehension education, and were limited to investigating the meanings of unknown words, explaining the content, determining the subject and main emotion, and trying to recognize some figures of speech
Genetic characterization of cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) resistance in tomato and pepper
Thesis(Master)--İzmir Institute of Technology, Biology, İzmir, 2005Includes bibliographical references (p.49-55)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishx, 55 leavesIn this study, tomato and pepper populations were phenotypically and genotypically characterized to identify cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) resistant lines and determine the genetic control of resistance. Populations of both crops and their resistant and susceptible parents were mechanically inoculated with CMV. Plants were evaluated visually and by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Since virus was detected only in inoculated leaves but was not usually present in uninoculated leaves of symptomless plants, CMV resistance appeared to be true resistance not immunity. According to phenotypic analysis of F2 tomato population, it was hypothesized that two dominant genes were controlling resistance as the plants fit a 9:7 (resistant:susceptible) segregation ratio as determined by Chi square goodness-of-fit analysis. In order to perform quantitiative trait locus (QTL) analysis, molecular markers were surveyed for polymorphism using the two parents of the tomato population, L. esculentum and L. hirsutum LA1223. According to QTL analysis (using 107 polymorphic markers), 11 genomic regions were linked to CMV resistance. For seven loci, resistance alleles were coming from the L. hirsutum parent as expected. However, for four loci, resistance was associated with alleles from the CMV susceptible parent, L. esculentum. These results show that the genetic potential for resistance cannot be determined by only looking at the phenotype of the two parents. As a result of this work, developing elite lines or transferring resistance genes into cultivated species by marker assisted selection will be easier

Do democracies promote peace in the lights of democratic peace theory?
It is believed that democracy and peace are inextricably linked, that democracy leads to and causes peace, and that peace cannot be achieved in the absence of democracy. It is an obvious but important starting-point to remember that democracy and peace are not timeless but historical social concepts. Indeed, war itself is a historical product as the negation of peace. Democracy is accepted as the only way for the peaceful world according to the Democratic Peace Theory, but to understand the democratic peace theory, it will be better to ask the question, “What is democracy”? Democratic peace theory’s main argument is that democracies do not fight each other, but “what kind democracies”? In this paper some important points of democracy and the democratic peace theory will be pointed out. This paper gives a perspective of the relationship of democracy and peace, and clarifies the question of “does democracy really promote peace”
The Effect of Mergers & Acquisitions on the Performances of the Companies
In recent years, the importance of mergers and acquisitions transactions has increased nationally and internationally as a result of globalization and developing technology. As a growth strategy, companies prefer mergers and acquisitions transactions because in this way; they have opportunities to combine their powers mutually and keep on taking place in a competitive area. This study aims to investigate which reasons encourage businesses for mergers and acquisitions, failure and success elements, and the process of mergers and acquisitions. In this study, the method used for the case study is Ratio Analysis which provides to compare the information concerning profitability, efficiency, and the financial structure of the companies before and after mergers and acquisitions. Thus, as a result of the financial status acquired after the merger, it can be revealed which factors can affect the performance of the companies. In this research, the merger activity between the companies AKIS Real Estate Investment Trust and SAF Real Estate Investment Trust which are the pioneer company in their sector analyzed using financial tables with ratio analysis. With this analysis method, liquidity rate analysis, leverage ratio analysis, activity rate analysis, and profitability ratio analysis were determined and the performance of the company after merger deals was indicated. Lack of cultural differences between the companies eased the process of combination and affected the performance of the companies positively
