Multipliers for p-Bessel sequences in Banach spaces
Multipliers have been recently introduced as operators for Bessel sequences
and frames in Hilbert spaces. These operators are defined by a fixed
multiplication pattern (the symbol) which is inserted between the analysis and
synthesis operators. In this paper, we will generalize the concept of Bessel
multipliers for p-Bessel and p-Riesz sequences in Banach spaces. It will be
shown that bounded symbols lead to bounded operators. Symbols converging to
zero induce compact operators. Furthermore, we will give sufficient conditions
for multipliers to be nuclear operators. Finally, we will show the continuous
dependency of the multipliers on their parameters.Comment: 17 page
The Higgs portal and an unified model for dark energy and dark matter
We examine a scenario where the Higgs boson is coupled to an additional
singlet scalar field which we identify with a quintessence field. We show that
this results in an unified picture of dark matter and dark energy, where dark
energy is the zero-mode classical field rolling the usual quintessence
potential and the dark matter candidate is the quantum excitation (particle) of
the field, which is produced in the universe due to its coupling to the Higgs
boson.Comment: 5 pages, no figures. New references and acknowledgment adde
Viable models with non-universal gaugino mediated supersymmetry breaking
Recently, extra dimensional SUSY GUT models have been proposed in which
compactification of the extra dimension(s) leads to a breakdown of the gauge
symmetry and/or supersymmetry. We examine a particular class of
higher-dimensional models exhibiting supersymmetry and SU(5) or SO(10) GUT
symmetry. SUSY breaking occurs on a hidden brane, and is communicated to the
visible brane via gaugino mediation. Non-universal gaugino masses are developed
at the compactification scale as a consequence of a restricted gauge symmetry
on the hidden brane. In this case, the compactification scale is at or slightly
below the GUT scale. We examine the parameter space of such models where
gaugino masses are related due to a Pati-Salam symmetry on the hidden brane. We
find limited but significant regions of model parameter space where a viable
spectra of SUSY matter is generated. Our results are extended to the more
general case of three independent gaugino masses; here we find that large
parameter space regions open up for large values of the U(1) gaugino mass M_1.
We also find the relic density of neutralinos for these models to be generally
below expectations from cosmological observations, thus leaving room for hidden
sector states to make up the bulk of cold dark matter. Finally, we evaluate the
branching fraction BF(b -> s gamma) and muon anomalous magnetic moment a_\mu.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figure
Bloodstream form pre-adaptation to the tsetse fly in Trypanosoma brucei
African trypanosomes are sustained in the bloodstream of their mammalian hosts by their extreme capacity for antigenic variation. However, for life cycle progression, trypanosomes also must generate transmission stages called stumpy forms that are pre-adapted to survive when taken up during the bloodmeal of the disease vector, tsetse flies. These stumpy forms are rather different to the proliferative slender forms that maintain the bloodstream parasitaemia. Firstly, they are non proliferative and morphologically distinct, secondly, they show particular sensitivity to environmental cues that signal entry to the tsetse fly and, thirdly, they are relatively robust such that they survive the changes in temperature, pH and proteolytic environment encountered within the tsetse midgut. These characteristics require regulated changes in gene expression to pre-adapt the parasite and the use of environmental sensing mechanisms, both of which allow the rapid initiation of differentiation to tsetse midgut procyclic forms upon transmission. Interestingly, the generation of stumpy forms is also regulated and periodic in the mammalian blood, this being governed by a density-sensing mechanism whereby a parasite-derived signal drives cell cycle arrest and cellular development both to optimise transmission and to prevent uncontrolled parasite multiplication overwhelming the host.In this review we detail recent developments in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that underpin the production of stumpy forms in the mammalian bloodstream and their signal perception pathways both in the mammalian bloodstream and upon entry into the tsetse fly. These discoveries are discussed in the context of conserved eukaryotic signalling and differentiation mechanisms. Further, their potential to act as targets for therapeutic strategies that disrupt parasite development either in the mammalian bloodstream or upon their transmission to tsetse flies is also discussed
River Discharge, in State of the Climate in 2008
The global mean temperature in 2008 was slightly cooler than that in 2007; however, it still ranks within the 10 warmest years on record. Annual mean temperatures were generally well above average in South America, northern and southern Africa, Iceland, Europe, Russia, South Asia, and Australia. In contrast, an exceptional cold outbreak occurred during January across Eurasia and over southern European Russia and southern western Siberia. There has been a general increase in land-surface temperatures and in permafrost temperatures during the last several decades throughout the Arctic region, including increases of 1° to 2°C in the last 30 to 35 years in Russia. Record setting warm summer (JJA) air temperatures were observed throughout Greenland

Detailed examination of a packet collision model for Bluetooth Low Energy advertising mode
The aim of this paper is to investigate the amount of energy that is required to successfully transmit information inside the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertising packets. There are applications that require more than one BLE node to simultaneously transmit data. The BLE protocol utilizes a specific communication method termed advertising mode to perform unidirectional broadcasts of data from the advertising devices. However, with an increased number of BLE devices advertising simultaneously, there will be inevitable packet collisions from the advertising devices. This results in a waste of energy, specifically in low-power applications where lower consumption is desirable to minimize the need for battery replacements. This paper examines a packet collision model for the BLE advertising mode with the results validated using experimental data. Our analysis shows that when the throughput of the BLE network starts to fall due to an increase in the number of packet collisions, the energy consumption of the BLE nodes increase exponentially with respect to the number of nodes
