Che Oil-sardine Sardinella longiceps contributes a major commercial fishery yielding about 15-20% of the total marine fish landings of India. Its fishery is characterised by remarkable and wide fluctuatk^ns both seasonal and annual. Hence its role in the economy of the flsherfolk and the fishery industry is of paramount importance. Valuable data on its fishery and biology have been collected and documented which are all of immense value for its rational exploitation and utilization

Biology of the silver belly, Leiognathus bindus (Val). of the Calicut coast

The silver bellies constitute one of the important inshore fisheries of India. From All- India fish landings it is evident that there have been wide fluctuations in the magnitude of Leiognathus fisheries from1950 to 1953. Of the 7 species of Leiognathus known to occur in the inshore regions, only 6 species are of commercial importance ; even amongst these, L. bindus (Val.) locally called Nalla Mullen is the most abundant in the Malabar coast. A perusal of previous work Chidambaram and Venkataraman (19^6), Devanesan and Chidambaram (194.8), Bhimachar and Venkataraman (1952), Nayar (1958), Venkataraman (i960) and Anon ((962) revealed that very little information is available on the biology and fishery of L. bindus (Val.) a commercially important species. Therefore, it was felt desirable to investigate in detail the biology and fishery of this species at Calicut from 1956 to 1958

Changes among traditional fishing gears in Kerala

With the advent of synthetic fibres in the fishing industry in India, despite the fishermen's conservative attitude to modernization, many changes in the fabrication of most of the time-honoured fishing nets have gradually come into existence

Multiple-relaxation-time Finsler-Lagrange dynamics in a compressed Langmuir monolayer

In this paper an information geometric approach has been proposed to describe the two-dimensional (2d) phase transition of the first order in a monomolecular layer (monolayer) of amphiphilic molecules deposited on air/water interface. The structurization of the monolayer was simulated as an entropy evolution of a statistical set of microscopic states with a large number of relaxation times. The electrocapillary forces are considered as information constraints on the statistical manifold. The solution curves of Euler-Lagrange equations and the Jacobi field equations point out contracting pencils of geodesic trajectories on the statistical manifold, which may change into spreading ones, and converse. It was shown that the information geometrodynamics of the first-order phase transition in the Langmuir monolayer finds an appropriate realization within the Finsler-Lagrange framework

The Indian oil sardine, Sardinella longiceps Val. sustains one of the major pelagic fisheries of the country.Though the fish occurs all along the peninsular region in varying quantities, the highest abundance has been noticed off the Kerala and Karnataka coasts, especially between Alleppey and Karwar. During the decade from 1969 to 1978, the highest all India oil sardine catch, was made in 1970. From the existing catch trends it is indicated that the sardine catches during the 1980 season would not be far from the average of the last decade. In the light of the stock assessment studies it may be mentioned that increase in fishing effort would result in better catches

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks with Quality-of-Service Constraints

A game-theoretic model is proposed to study the cross-layer problem of joint power and rate control with quality of service (QoS) constraints in multiple-access networks. In the proposed game, each user seeks to choose its transmit power and rate in a distributed manner in order to maximize its own utility while satisfying its QoS requirements. The user's QoS constraints are specified in terms of the average source rate and an upper bound on the average delay where the delay includes both transmission and queuing delays. The utility function considered here measures energy efficiency and is particularly suitable for wireless networks with energy constraints. The Nash equilibrium solution for the proposed non-cooperative game is derived and a closed-form expression for the utility achieved at equilibrium is obtained. It is shown that the QoS requirements of a user translate into a "size" for the user which is an indication of the amount of network resources consumed by the user. Using this competitive multiuser framework, the tradeoffs among throughput, delay, network capacity and energy efficiency are studied. In addition, analytical expressions are given for users' delay profiles and the delay performance of the users at Nash equilibrium is quantified.Comment: Accpeted for publication in the IEEE Transactions on Communication
