Effect of disorder on the conductance of a Cu atomic point contact

    Get PDF
We present a systematic study of the effect of the disorder in copper point contacts. We show that peaks in the conductance histogram of copper point contacts shift upon addition of nickel impurities. The shift increases initially linerarly with the nickel concentration, thus confirming that it is due to disorder in the nanowire, in accordance with predictions. In general, this shift is modelled as a resistance R_s which is placed in series with the contact resistance R_c. However, we obtain different R_s values for the two peaks in the histogram, R_s being larger for the peak at higher conductance.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Reconsidering the Link Between Self-Reported Personality Traits and Political Preferences

Research on personality and political preferences generally assumes unidirectional causal influence of the former on the latter. However, there are reasons to believe that citizens might adopt what they perceive as politically congruent psychological attributes, or at least be motivated to view themselves as having these attributes. We test this hypothesis in a series of studies. Results of preregistered panel analyses in three countries suggest reciprocal causal influences between self-reported personality traits and political preferences. In two two-wave survey experiments, a subtle political prime at the beginning of a survey resulted in self-reported personality traits that were more aligned with political preferences gauged in a previous assessment. We discuss how concurrent assessment within the context of a political survey might overestimate the causal influence of personality traits on political preferences and how political polarization might be exacerbated by political opponents adopting different personality characteristics or self-perceptions thereof

Phosphate-selective fluorescent sensing microspheres based on uranyl salophene ionophores

Optical dihydrogen phosphate-selective sensors that function on the basis of bulk optode principles and are based on two different uranyl salophene ionophores are reported here for the first time. The influence of the optode composition and measuring conditions such as sample pH on the optode response are characterized, along with sensor selectivity and long-term stability. Three plasticizers of different polarity are considered for optode fabrication: bis(2-ethylhexyl)sebacate (DOS), dodecyl 2-nitrophenyl ether (o-NPDDE), o-nitrophenyloctylether (o-NPOE). The compounds 9-(diethylamino)-5-(octadecanoylimino)-5H-benzo[a]phenoxazine (ETH 5294, chromoionophore I) and 9-(diethylamino)-5-[(2-octyldecyl)imino]benzo[a]phenoxazine (ETH 5350, chromoionophore III) are used as H+-selective fluoroionophores that also act as reference ionophores. The resulting optode-based sensors are compared with their ion-selective electrode (ISE) counterparts, and it is revealed that optodes are better suited for operation at physiological pH. The best optode performance was found for the two component optode sensors doped with ETH 5350 and phosphate ionophore(I). The linear range of these sensor was log a = −6.0 to −2.6. Dihydrogen phosphate-selective optode sensors of optimized composition are fabricated in microsphere format and preliminary measurements in diluted sheep blood samples are presented

The adsorption of the neutral surfactant Brij35 at a liquid–liquid interface is reversibly monitored via its disturbance of an electrochemically imposed ion flux across the interface, forming a promising experimental tool for the detection of surface confined reactions at such liquids and polymers
