Low-altitude measurements of 2â6 MeV electron trapping lifetimes at 1.5 †L †2.5
During the Halloween Storm period (OctoberâNovember 2003), a new Van Allen belt electron population was powerfully accelerated. The inner belt of electrons formed in this process decayed over a period of days to years. We have examined quantitatively the decay rates for electrons seen in the region of 1.5 †L †2.5 using SAMPEX satellite observations. At L = 1.5 the e-folding lifetime for 2â6 MeV electrons was Ï âŒ 180 days. On the other hand, for the half-dozen distinct acceleration (or enhancement) events seen during late-2003 through 2005 at L ⌠2.0, the lifetimes ranged from Ï âŒ 8 days to Ï âŒ 35 days. We compare these loss rates to those expected from prior studies. We find that lifetimes at L = 2.0 are much shorter than the average 100â200 days that present theoretical estimates would suggest for the overall L = 2 electron population. Additional wave-particle interaction aspects must be included in theoretical treatments and we describe such possibilities here

Sampling and analysis plan for sludge located in fuel storage canisters of the 105-K West basin
This Sampling and Analysis Plan (SAP) provides direction for the first sampling of sludge from the K West Basin spent fuel canisters. The specially developed sampling equipment removes representative samples of sludge while maintaining the radioactive sample underwater in the basin pool (equipment is described in WHC-SD-SNF-SDD-004). Included are the basic background logic for sample selection, the overall laboratory analyses required and the laboratory reporting required. These are based on requirements put forth in the data quality objectives (WHC-SD-SNF-DQO-012) established for this sampling and characterization activity

Sampling and analysis plan for the consolidated sludge samples from the canisters and floor of the 105-K East basin
This Sampling and Analysis Plan (SAP) provides direction for sampling of fuel canister and floor Sludge from the K East Basin to complete the inventory of samples needed for Sludge treatment process testing. Sample volumes and sources consider recent reviews made by the Sludge treatment subproject. The representative samples will be characterized to the extent needed for the material to be used effectively for testing. Sampling equipment used allows drawing of large volume sludge samples and consolidation of sample material from a number of basin locations into one container. Once filled, the containers will be placed in a cask and transported to Hanford laboratories for recovery and evaluation. Included in the present SAP are the logic for sample location selection, laboratory analysis procedures required, and reporting needed to meet the Data Quality Objectives (DQOs) for this initiative
A room temperature polyaniline nanofiber hydrogen gas sensor
AbstractâElectro-conductive polyaniline (PANI) nanofiber based Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) gas sensors have been investigated with hydrogen (H2) gas. A template-free, rapidly mixed method was employed to synthesize polyaniline nanofibers using chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline. The nanofibers were deposited onto a layered ZnO/64Âș YX LiNbO3 SAW transducer for gas sensing applications. The novel sensor was exposed to various concentrations of H2 gas at room temperature. The sensor response, defined as the relative variation in operating frequency of oscillation due to the introduction of the gas, was 3.04 kHz towards a 1 % H2 concentration. A relatively fast response time of 8 sec and a recovery time of 60 sec with good repeatability were observed at room temperature. The position of graptolites within Lower Palaeozoic planktic ecosystems.
An integrated approach has been used to assess the palaeoecology of graptolites both as a discrete group and also as a part of the biota present within Ordovician and Silurian planktic realms. Study of the functional morphology of graptolites and comparisons with recent ecological analogues demonstrates that graptolites most probably filled a variety of niches as primary consumers, with modes of life related to the colony morphotype. Graptolite coloniality was extremely ordered, lacking any close morphological analogues in Recent faunas. To obtain maximum functional efficiency, graptolites would have needed varying degrees of coordinated automobility. A change in lifestyle related to ontogenetic changes was prevalent within many graptolite groups. Differing lifestyle was reflected by differing reproductive strategies, with synrhabdosomes most likely being a method for rapid asexual reproduction. Direct evidence in the form of graptolithophage 'coprolitic' bodies, as well as indirect evidence in the form of probable defensive adaptations, indicate that graptolites comprised a food item for a variety of predators. Graptolites were also hosts to a variety of parasitic organisms and provided an important nutrient source for scavenging organisms

The two-dimensional one-component plasma (2dOCP) is a system of mobile
particles of the same charge on a surface with a neutralising background.
The Boltzmann factor of the 2dOCP at temperature can be expressed as a
Vandermonde determinant to the power . Recent advances in
the theory of symmetric and anti-symmetric Jack polymonials provide an
efficient way to expand this power of the Vandermonde in their monomial basis,
allowing the computation of several thermodynamic and structural properties of
the 2dOCP for values up to 14 and equal to 4, 6 and 8. In this
work, we explore two applications of this formalism to study the moments of the
pair correlation function of the 2dOCP on a sphere, and the distribution of
radial linear statistics of the 2dOCP in the plane
