Infective endocarditis (IE) is a potentially life-threatening disease which carries high risk of morbidity and mortality. The variability of clinical presentation of infective IE remains a diagnostic challenge for the Emergency Physicians. The clinical manifestation may present as an acute, rapidly progressive infection with the absence of classical immunological vascular phenomenon or as subacute or chronic disease with vague constitutional symptoms that may mislead initial assessment and mimic other conditions. Symptoms may also manifest as a result of systemic embolization which can be catastrophic and life-threatening especially if it ends up in the cerebral circulation. IE complicated by cerebral mycotic aneurysm (CMA) is the worst neurological sequalae and can be misdiagnosed as a primary intracranial infection such as meningoencephalitis. Here, we report a case of neurological emergency secondary to systemic embolization of IE with a devastating diagnosis of CMA. History of prolonged fever associated with headache and focal neurological deficit led to the initial diagnosis of meningoencephalitis due to a low clinical suspicion of the disease in the Emergency Department. In emergency setting, a combination of high degree of clinical suspicion together with thorough history, physical examination and diagnostic imaging are crucial in order to guide and establish the diagnosis of this potentially devastating disease. Early recognition and initiation of aggressive treatment is crucial to provide better prognosis and higher survival rate for patients with CMA

    Get PDF
This paper reports on the synthesis and characterization of CdTe-CdSe core-shell quantum dots (QDs) with luminescent from 650 to 720 nm. The QDs were synthesized using a wet-chemical process at a moderate temperature (300 °C) following two-steps process of core and shell synthesis. The photoluminescence characterization on the QDs showed that the QDs emitted light in the range of red regime with quantum yield as high as 37%. Owing to their unique photoluminescence characteristics (high quantum yield and narrow spectrum), the QDs may find a potential application in a variety of applications such as LED, solar cell and bio-labeling

Enzymatic characterization of heterologously expressed fungal β-glucosidase BGLII in Escherichia coli

    Get PDF
Saprophytic filamentous fungi such as Trichoderma sp. are capable of producing three categories of cellulase for cellulose degradation into glucose; endoglucanase, cellobiohydrolase and β-glucosidase. Trichoderma reesei in particular has an extensively studied cellulase enzyme system, establishing it as a model organism for enzymatic production. Studies on β-glucosidases produced by Trichoderma sp. have elucidated two variants, which have been classified into glycosyl hydrolase families 1 and 3, both including retaining enzymes capable of substrate hydrolysis via double-displacement method with retention of anomeric carbon. Extensive studies on BglI enzyme isolated has been compared and found to have sequence similarity to other known glycosyl hydrolase family 3 β-glucosidases, an enzyme that is cell wall bound or expressed extracellularly, affects rate of reducing sugar formation from cellulase and involved in synthesis of soluble inducer of cellulolytic enzymes. Comparatively, enzyme characterization of the second β-glucosidase, BglII, has been relatively recent. Nevertheless, it has been identified to be expressed intracellularly, has high affinity and catalyzes transglycosylation reactions on cellobiose. Of particular interest, BglII has shown lower sensitivity to glucose inhibition, an appealing character for bioprocess development for efficient lignocellulosic biomass saccharification. As such, using local Trichoderma sp., this study has sought to characterize the BglII gene isolated and following heterologous expression in Escherichia coli, characterize the recombinant enzyme for enzyme activity, glucose tolerance and product synthesis

EQ and SQ: how they relate to cognitive strategies to regulate emotion

    Get PDF
Self regulation of emotion refers to the skill and ability to handle different kinds emotions, especially those categorized as negative emotions. Inability to properly regulate emotions may lead to portrayal of unwanted or inappropriate behavior that can range from mild to extreme, including involvement in various kinds of behavioral problems. Therefore, regulation of emotion has been considered by experts as the key to understand and control behavior, especially among adolescents. Garnefski (2005) has identified 12 cognitive strategies that adolescents used to handle and overcome negative emotions. Based on Gross (2004) model of emotional regulation, it is stipulated that several internal and external factors may influence the usage of these cognitive strategies in regulating emotions. This study aims to look at how a person's level of emotional quotient and spiritual quotient were related to the usage of different cognitive strategies in regulating emotion. A total of 560 Form Four students from schools located in all the five zones in Malaysia (North, South, East Coast, Central and East Malaysia) were involved in the study. The findings showed that emotional quotient and spiritual quotient both have significant relationships with the usage of cognitive strategies in self regulation of emotion. The strength of relationship of EQ and SQ with self-regulation of emotion were stronger in the group of students with behavior problems with r= .47 and r= .42 respectively. Significant relationships were also found in students with good behaviour with r= .38 and r=.42 respectively. These findings have both theoretical and practical implications that are discussed in the paper

Proliferation and Differentiation of Human Hair Follicle Stem Cells on Chitosan-Skin Engineered Template in Vitro

    Get PDF
Hair follicles repeatedly regress and reconstitute themselves, suggesting the presence of intrinsic tissue stem cells. Among the unique characteristics of adult stem cells isolated from hair follicles is their ability to differentiate into keratinocytes. Study on chitosan skin-engineered templates (SETs) as scaffolds for the proliferation of human fibroblasts have shown the promise of SETs in facilitating skin cell growth in three-dimensional culture. High proliferation in three-dimensional culture using human cells allows the researcher to extensively evaluate the cultivation of desirable cell types on chitosan SETs. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the in vitro attachment, proliferation and differentiation of hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs) on a chitosan SETs. HFSCs were isolated from human scalp tissues using collagenase type I prior to propagation in supplemented CnT-07 media. The phenotype of the HFSCs was verified using the markers keratin-15 (K15) and CD200, as detected by immunocytochemical staining. The attachment and proliferation of the HFSCs on the chitosan SETs were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), an alamar blue assay and a live/dead assay. Subsequently, the HFSCs were differentiated using CnT-2D differentiation media. The cells’ differentiation was verified using the markers involucrin and keratin-6 (K6), as detected by immunofluorescence staining. The HFSCs were successfully isolated, proliferated and differentiated according to staining positivity and microscopy imaging. HFSCs are able to proliferate and directly differentiate into keratinocytes on a chitosan SETs, which may facilitate their use in regenerative medicine
