Continued Progress: Promising Evidence on Personalized Learning
The findings are grouped into four sections. The first section on student achievement finds that there were positive effects on student mathematics and reading performance and that the lowest-performing students made substantial gains relative to their peers. The second section on implementation and the perceptions of stakeholders finds that adoption of personalized learning practices varied considerably. Personalized learning practices that are direct extensions of current practice were more common, but implementation of some of the more challenging personalized learning strategies was less common. The third section relates implementation features to outcomes and identifies three elements of personalized learning that were being implemented in tandem in the schools with the largest achievement effects. Finally, the fourth section compares teachers' and students' survey responses to a national sample and finds some differences, such as teachers' greater use of practices that support competency-based learning and greater use of technology for personalization in the schools in this study with implementation data
DynPeak : An algorithm for pulse detection and frequency analysis in hormonal time series
The endocrine control of the reproductive function is often studied from the
analysis of luteinizing hormone (LH) pulsatile secretion by the pituitary
gland. Whereas measurements in the cavernous sinus cumulate anatomical and
technical difficulties, LH levels can be easily assessed from jugular blood.
However, plasma levels result from a convolution process due to clearance
effects when LH enters the general circulation. Simultaneous measurements
comparing LH levels in the cavernous sinus and jugular blood have revealed
clear differences in the pulse shape, the amplitude and the baseline. Besides,
experimental sampling occurs at a relatively low frequency (typically every 10
min) with respect to LH highest frequency release (one pulse per hour) and the
resulting LH measurements are noised by both experimental and assay errors. As
a result, the pattern of plasma LH may be not so clearly pulsatile. Yet,
reliable information on the InterPulse Intervals (IPI) is a prerequisite to
study precisely the steroid feedback exerted on the pituitary level. Hence,
there is a real need for robust IPI detection algorithms. In this article, we
present an algorithm for the monitoring of LH pulse frequency, basing ourselves
both on the available endocrinological knowledge on LH pulse (shape and
duration with respect to the frequency regime) and synthetic LH data generated
by a simple model. We make use of synthetic data to make clear some basic
notions underlying our algorithmic choices. We focus on explaining how the
process of sampling affects drastically the original pattern of secretion, and
especially the amplitude of the detectable pulses. We then describe the
algorithm in details and perform it on different sets of both synthetic and
experimental LH time series. We further comment on how to diagnose possible
outliers from the series of IPIs which is the main output of the algorithm.Comment: Nombre de pages : 35 ; Nombre de figures : 16 ; Nombre de tableaux :
Morphology of the recently re-classified Tasman masked booby (Sula dactylatra tasmani) breeding on the Kermadec Islands
Once thought to be extinct, the Tasman Booby Sula tasmani has recently been re-classified as a subspecies of the Masked Booby S. dactylatra on the basis of genetic data. This re-classification raises the issue of whether this novel clade has a distinct morphology. Morphological differences in size, as well as coloration of integuments, bill and iris have been found in other subspecies of the Masked Booby but have not yet been reported for live Kermadec Islands breeding individuals. Museum specimens from this breeding location have been separated from other Pacific breeding subspecies by their longer wings. We sampled a total of 21 individuals from North Meyer Islet, Kermadec Group, New
Zealand, and applied molecular sexing to obtain sex-specific morphometric measurements. We matched dimorphism in vocalization with genetic sexing results and photographic documentation of human-assessed bill, foot and eye coloration. While culmen measurements were consistent with reports from museum specimens, wing chords from living specimens of Tasman Masked Boobies were 3% and 4% larger in males and females, respectively. Females had larger culmens and wings than males, consistent with the low extent of sexual dimorphism reported from museum skins. Adult Tasman Masked Boobies had yellow to buff-yellow feet, while fledglings, as in most sulids, had grey
to greyish-yellow feet. Our findings confirm the distinctively long wing and particular iris coloration previously reported for the taxon and provide the first description of integument coloration of live specimens. This study highlights the importance of including in situ assessment in taxon descriptions
COST PROJECTIONS FOR POST-CLOSURE CUSTODIAL CARE OF THE BARNWELL RADIOACTIVE WASTE DISPOSAL FACILITY
This document evaluates the adequacy of the Barnwell Extended Care Fund in light of the risks identified and concludes that it is sufficiently funded to cover the costs and uncertainties associated with activities planned for post-closure care of the facility. The report concludes that the fund is currently sufficiently
funded to cover some but not all of the costs that might be incurred in responding to unplanned events
and consequences. The document reviews
background information pertinent to the post-
closure monitoring and maintenance of the Barnwell low-level radioactive waste disposal facility (the Barnwell facility) and describes financial responsibility for post-closure activities
Carcinogenic effects of ptaquiloside in bracken fern and related compounds
Consumption of the bracken fern Pteridium aquilinum by cattle has been shown to induce bladder and intestinal carcinomas in cattle and to cause a number of diseases in other farm animals. An unstable glucoside named ptaquiloside, containing a reactive cyclopropane ring, has been isolated from the fern and its potent carcinogenicity proven. Nineteen of 31 ferns tested by chemotaxonomic methods in Japan have been found to contain potentially carcinogenic ptaquilosides as have Cheilanthes sieberi and Pteridium esculentum. Hydrolysis of ptaquilosides leads to pterosins; under milder conditions a dienone which is believed to be the primary carcinogen is obtained. Hypacrone, a sesquiterpine containing a reactive cyclopropane ring, has been isolated from Hypolepis punctata and its structure proved by synthesis. Illudins, structurally similar to ptaquiloside, have been isolated from the basidiomycete Omphalotus illudens. These give anti-tumour activity and similar reactivity with nucleophiles to ptaquiloside. Compound CC-1065, a highly toxic antibiotic also containing a cyclopropane ring, has been isolated from Streptomyces zelensis. The mechanism of its reactivity with DNA has been compared to that of ptaquiloside and the small structural differences between carcinogenic and anti-tumour activity discussed. Both CC-1065 and adozelesin, a synthetic analogue with anti-tumour activity, have been shown to alkylate the N-3 atom of adenine in a certain sequence of DNA. The reactivity of cysteine with ptaquilosides and illudins is discussed, as is the role of cysteine alkylating agents in apoptosis. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
Demixing of aqueous polymer two-phase systems in low gravity
When polymers such as dextran and poly(ethylene glycol) are mixed in aqueous solution biphasic systems often form. On Earth the emulsion formed by mixing the phases rapidly demixes because of phase density differences. Biological materials can be purified by selective partitioning between the phases. In the case of cells and other particulates the efficiency of these separations appears to be somewhat compromised by the demixing process. To modify this process and to evaluate the potential of two-phase partitioning in space, experiments on the effects of gravity on phase emulsion demixing were undertaken. The behavior of phase systems with essentially identical phase densities was studied at one-g and during low-g parabolic aircraft maneuvers. The results indicate the demixing can occur rather rapidly in space, although more slowly than on Earth. The demixing process was examined from a theoretical standpoint by applying the theory of Ostwald ripening. This theory predicts demizing rates many orders of magnitude lower than observed. Other possible demixing mechanisms are considered
Perfect fluids from high power sigma-models
Certain solutions of a sextic sigma-model Lagrangian reminiscent of Skyrme
model correspond to perfect fluids with stiff matter equation of state. We
analyse from a differential geometric perspective this correspondence extended
