Supplementation of nitrogen and its influence on free sugars, amino acid and protein metabolism in roots and internodes of wheat
Effect of different doses of nitrogen (N) (90, 120, 150 and 180 kg Nha–1) on the activities of aminotransferases and alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase (AIP) in relation to the accumulation of proteins, amino acids and sugars in roots and internodes at 15 and 40 days post anthesis (DPA) stages was studied in six wheat genotypes namely HD 2967, GLU 1101, PBW 343, BW 9022, PH-132-4840 and PBW 550. Supra-optimal N doses (150 kg Nha–1 and 180 kg Nha–1) accentuated glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT), glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and alkaline inorganic pyrophosphatase activities in correspondence with an increase in amino acid, protein and sugar content in both roots and internodes in all the six genotypes. Activities of analyzed enzymes were significantly high at 15 days post anthesis (DPA) stage and thereafter declined at maturity (40 DPA) in parallel with decrease in amino acid contents. Maximum activity of GOT, GPT and AIP was observed in HD 2967 and GLU 1101 genotypes along with higher build up of proteins and amino acids which resulted in higher grain yield. Activity of GPT was comparatively high over GOT, indicating its major role towards protein synthesis. Grain filling processes in terms of proteins and amino acids were positively correlated with GOT and GPT activities while sugars were correlated to AIP. Thus, nitrogen acquisition and assimilation resulted in favoured utilization of N in form of amino acid and proteins accumulation while sugar content was also stimulated. Due to immense activities of aminotransferases and higher contents of amino acids and proteins in GLU 1101 and HD 2967 genotypes at optimal dose and higher dose of N, these genotypes hold future potential for developing new cultivars with better grain quality characteristics
Sub-au imaging of water vapour clouds around four Asymptotic Giant Branch stars
We present MERLIN maps of the 22-GHz H2O masers around four low-mass
late-type stars (IK Tau U Ori, RT Vir and U Her), made with an angular
resolution of ~ 15 milliarcsec and a velocity resolution of 0.1 km s-1. The H2O
masers are found in thick expanding shells with inner radii ~ 6 to 16 au and
outer radii four times larger. The expansion velocity increases radially
through the H2O maser regions, with logarithmic velocity gradients of 0.5--0.9.
IK Tau and RT Vir have well-filled H2O maser shells with a spatial offset
between the near and far sides of the shell, which suggests that the masers are
distributed in oblate spheroids inclined to the line of sight. U Ori and U Her
have elongated poorly-filled shells with indications that the masers at the
inner edge have been compressed by shocks; these stars also show OH maser
flares. MERLIN resolves individual maser clouds, which have diameters of 2 -- 4
au and filling factors of only ~ 0.01 with respect to the whole H2O maser
shells. The CSE velocity structure gives additional evidence the maser clouds
are density bounded. Masing clouds can be identified over a similar timescale
to their sound crossing time (~2 yr) but not longer. The sizes and observed
lifetimes of these clouds are an order of magnitude smaller than those around
red supergiants, similar to the ratio of low-mass:high-mass stellar masses and
sizes. This suggests that cloud size is determined by stellar properties, not

Group psychoeducative cognitive-behaviour therapy for mixed anxiety and depression with older adults
Objectives: There is a dearth of older adult evidence regarding the group treatment for co-morbid anxiety and depression. This research evaluated the effectiveness of a low-intensity group psychoeducational approach.
Method: Patients attended six sessions of a manualised cognitive-behavioural group. Validated measures of anxiety, depression and psychological well-being were taken at assessment, termination and six-week follow-up from patients, who also rated the alliance and their anxiety/depression at each group session. Staff rated patients regarding their functioning at assessment, termination and six-week follow-up. Outcomes were categorised according to whether patients had recovered, improved, deteriorated or been harmed. Effect sizes were compared to extant group interventions for anxiety and depression.
Results: Eight groups were completed with 34 patients, with a drop-out rate of 17%. Staff and patient rated outcome measures showed significant improvements (with small effect sizes) in assessment to termination and assessment to follow-up comparisons. Over one quarter (26.47%) of patients met the recovery criteria at follow-up and no patients were harmed. Outcomes for anxiety were better than for depression with the alliance in groups stable over time.
Conclusion: The intervention evaluated shows clinical and organisational promise. The group approach needs to be further developed and tested in research with greater methodological control
Anomalous Thermoelectric power of over-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 superconductor
Temperature dependence of thermoelectric power S(T) of three differently
processed Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) samples, viz. as-processed melt quenched
(Bi2212-MQ), 6000C N2-annealed (Bi2212-N2) and 6000C O2-annealed (Bi2212-O2) is
reported here. All the samples possess single-phase character and their
superconducting transition temperatures (TcR=0) are 85 K, 90 K and 72 K
respectively for Bi2212-MQ, Bi2212-N2 and Bi2212-O2. While Bi2212-MQ and
Bi2212-N2 samples are in near optimum doping regime, Bi2212-O2 is an over-doped
sample. TcS=0 values obtained through S(T) data are also in line with those
deduced from the temperature dependence of resistance and DC magnetization.
Interestingly, S(T) behaviour of the optimally-doped Bi2212-MQ and Bi2212-N2
samples is seen to be positive in whole temperature range, it is found negative
for the over-doped Bi2212-O2 sample above TcS=0. These results have been seen
in the light of the recent band structure calculations and the ensuing split
Fermi surface as determined by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy

The study outcome of bouquet technique for the management of displaced boxer's fracture
Background: Fifth metacarpal neck fracture is also called Boxer's fracture. Most commonly occurs due to aggression behaviour that result in punch on a wall with a clenched first. If there is a displacement of boxer’s fracture more than 500 then it has to be managed operatively. We here present the outcome of bouquet technique that we used to operate the 80 cases of 5th metacarpal neck fracture.
Methods: We studied and did follow up of the 80, 5th metacarpal neck fracture that managed by bouquet technique. Clinical and radiological assessment was done at 4weeks and 6 weeks and 12 weeks. Total active motion, radiography and complication were noted.
Results: Out of 80 patients that were studied 72 got excellent results and 8 got fair results. Whereas one patient got infection and 2 got adventitious bursitis at the entry site which requires k wire removal.
Conclusions: The technique of antegrade intramedullary 3 kirschners wire in management of 5th metacarpal neck fracture is safe, simple, soft tissue sparing, minimally invasive technique with excellent functional and cosmetic outcome with minimal complications

Growth in electronic information services, pressure on staff resources and developments in the area of electronic learning have resulted in a need for online information skills delivery. Edinburgh University Library has developed some simple animated tutorials using Macromedia Flash
to support use of a number of library services. The process of planning, creating and evaluating the modules is described, and the need to consider issues of accessibility, usability and pedagogy is emphasised. Technical aspects of design and documentation are considered. We conclude that it is important to consider the cost and time involved in even a modest exercise of this nature, but that the Flash software makes it very achievable, given an initial investment in development time and training
Synthesis and Characterization of Fluorene Based Organic Dyes and its Application in Dye Sensitized Solar Cells
Synthesis of novel metal-free fluorene and imidazole pyridine spacer based organic dye with –CN (cyano), -C=O (carboxyl), -NO2 (nitro) as acceptors (anchoring group) and diphenylamine as electron donor part for dye-sensitized solar cells. Time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) theoretical investigation was carried out to explain the characteristic feature of the dye, photophysical property (UV-Vis absorption) and electrochemical property (Cyclic Voltammetry) was done as an evidence to check the influence of electron donor, electron acceptor part on dye and these calculation shows that these dyes could prove to be efficient in solar cell
