Revisiting the Evaluation of Image Synthesis with GANs
A good metric, which promises a reliable comparison between solutions, is
essential for any well-defined task. Unlike most vision tasks that have
per-sample ground-truth, image synthesis tasks target generating unseen data
and hence are usually evaluated through a distributional distance between one
set of real samples and another set of generated samples. This study presents
an empirical investigation into the evaluation of synthesis performance, with
generative adversarial networks (GANs) as a representative of generative
models. In particular, we make in-depth analyses of various factors, including
how to represent a data point in the representation space, how to calculate a
fair distance using selected samples, and how many instances to use from each
set. Extensive experiments conducted on multiple datasets and settings reveal
several important findings. Firstly, a group of models that include both
CNN-based and ViT-based architectures serve as reliable and robust feature
extractors for measurement evaluation. Secondly, Centered Kernel Alignment
(CKA) provides a better comparison across various extractors and hierarchical
layers in one model. Finally, CKA is more sample-efficient and enjoys better
agreement with human judgment in characterizing the similarity between two
internal data correlations. These findings contribute to the development of a
new measurement system, which enables a consistent and reliable re-evaluation

CoDeF: Content Deformation Fields for Temporally Consistent Video Processing
We present the content deformation field CoDeF as a new type of video
representation, which consists of a canonical content field aggregating the
static contents in the entire video and a temporal deformation field recording
the transformations from the canonical image (i.e., rendered from the canonical
content field) to each individual frame along the time axis.Given a target
video, these two fields are jointly optimized to reconstruct it through a
carefully tailored rendering pipeline.We advisedly introduce some
regularizations into the optimization process, urging the canonical content
field to inherit semantics (e.g., the object shape) from the video.With such a
design, CoDeF naturally supports lifting image algorithms for video processing,
in the sense that one can apply an image algorithm to the canonical image and
effortlessly propagate the outcomes to the entire video with the aid of the
temporal deformation field.We experimentally show that CoDeF is able to lift
image-to-image translation to video-to-video translation and lift keypoint
detection to keypoint tracking without any training.More importantly, thanks to
our lifting strategy that deploys the algorithms on only one image, we achieve
superior cross-frame consistency in processed videos compared to existing
video-to-video translation approaches, and even manage to track non-rigid

Fibroblast growth factor (FGF21) protects mouse liver against D-galactose-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis via activating Nrf2 and PI3K/Akt pathways
FGF21 is recently discovered with pleiotropic effects on glucose and lipid metabolism. However, the potential protective effect of FGF21 against D-gal-induced injury in the liver has not been demonstrated. The aim of this study is to investigate the pathophysiological role of FGF21 on hepatic oxidative injury and apoptosis in mice induced by D-gal. The 3-month-old Kunming mice were subcutaneously injected with D-gal (180 mg kg(-1) d(1)) for 8 weeks and administered simultaneously with FGF21 (5 or 1 mg kg(-1) d(1)). Our results showed that the administration of FGF21 significantly alleviated histological lesion including structure damage, degeneration, and necrosis of hepatocytes induced by D-gal, and attenuated the elevation of liver injury markers, serum AST, and ALP in a dosedependent manner. FGF21 treatment also suppressed D-galinduced profound elevation of ROS production and oxidative stress, as evidenced by an increase of the MDA level and depletion of the intracellular GSH level in the liver, and restored the activities of antioxidant enzymes SOD, CAT, GSH-Px, and T-AOC. Moreover, FGF21 treatment increased the nuclear abundance of Nrf2 and subsequent up regulation of several antioxidant genes. Furthermore, a TUNEL assay showed that D-gal-induced apoptosis in the mouse liver was significantly inhibited by FGF21. The expression of caspase-3 was markedly inhibited by the treatment of FGF21 in the liver of D-gal-treated mice. The levels of PI3K and PBK/Akt were also largely enhanced, which in turn inactivated pro-apoptotic signaling events, restoring the balance between pro-and anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and Bax proteins in the liver of D-gal-treated mice. In conclusion, these results suggest that FGF21 protects the mouse liver against D-gal-induced hepatocyte oxidative stress via enhancing Nrf2-mediated antioxidant capacity and apoptosis via activating PI3K/Akt pathway
Sex differences in correlates of suicide attempts in Chinese Han first-episode and drug-na?ve major depressive disorder with comorbid subclinical hypothyroidism: A cross-sectional study
BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate sex differences in risk factors for suicide attempts in first-episode and drug naive (FEDN) major depressive disorder (MDD) with comorbid subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH).MethodsA total of 1034 FEDN MDD patients with comorbid SCH were enrolled. The Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) positive subscale were used to assess patients' symptoms. Thyroid hormone levels and metabolic parameters were measured.ResultsMDD patients with SCH had a significantly higher risk of suicide attempts than those without SCH (25.4% vs. 12.2%). Logistic regression showed that HAMA score, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) levels were significantly associated with an increased risk for suicide attempts in both male and female MDD patients comorbid SCH, while low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) was significantly associated with an increased risk for suicide attempts only in male patients, HAMD score and systolic blood pressure were significantly associated with an increased risk for suicide attempts only in female patients.ConclusionSCH comorbidities may increase suicide attempts in MDD patients. Our results showed significant sex differences in clinical and metabolic factors associated with suicide attempts among FEDN MDD patients with comorbid SCH, highlighting appropriate sex-based preventive interventions are needed.

Dietary Moutan Cortex Radicis Improves Serum Antioxidant Capacity and Intestinal Immunity and Alters Colonic Microbiota in Weaned Piglets
Background: Moutan cortex radicis (MCR), as a common traditional Chinese medicine, has been widely used as an antipyretic, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory agent in China. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary MCR supplementation on the antioxidant capacity and intestinal health of the pigs and to explore whether MCR exerts positive effects on intestinal health via regulating nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-kappa B) signaling pathway and intestinal microbiota. Methods: MCR powder was identified by LC-MS analysis. Selected 32 weaned piglets (21 d of age, 6.37 +/- 0.10 kg average BW) were assigned (8 pens/diet, 1 pig/pen) to 4 groups and fed with a corn-soybean basal diet supplemented with 0, 2,000, 4,000, and 8,000 mg/kg MCR for 21 d. After the piglets were sacrificed, antioxidant indices, histomorphology examination, and inflammatory signaling pathway expression were assessed. The 16s RNA sequencing was used to analyze the effects of MCR on the intestinal microbiota structure of piglets. Results: Supplemental 4,000 mg/kg MCR significantly increased (P 0.05). Microbial metabolic phenotypes analysis also showed that the richness of aerobic bacteria and facultative anaerobic bacteria, oxidative stress tolerance, and biofilm forming were significantly increased (P < 0.05), and the richness of anaerobic bacteria and pathogenic potential of gut microbiota were reduced (P < 0.05) by MCR treatment. Regression analysis showed that the optimalMCR supplemental level for growth performance, serum antioxidant capacity, and intestinal health of weaned piglets was 3,420 similar to 4,237 mg/kg. Conclusions: MCR supplementation improved growth performance and serum antioxidant capacity, and alleviated intestinal inflammation by inhibiting the IKK beta/I kappa B alpha/NF-kappa B signaling pathway and affecting intestinal microbiota in weaned piglets
Fibroblast growth factor 21 protects mouse brain against D-galactose induced aging via suppression of oxidative stress response and advanced glycation end products formation
Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a hormone secreted predominantly in the liver, pancreas and adipose tissue. Recently, it has been reported that FGF21-Transgenic mice can extend their lifespan compared with wild type counterparts. Thus, we hypothesize that FGF21 may play some roles in aging of organisms. In this study h-galactose (D-gal)-induced aging mice were used to study the mechanism that FGF21 protects mice from aging. The three-month-old Kunming mice were subcutaneously injected with D-gal (180 mg.kg(-1).d(-1)) for 8 weeks and administered simultaneously with FGF21 (1, 2 or 5 mg.kg(-1).d(-1)). Our results showed that administration of FGF21 significantly improved behavioral performance of D-gal-treated mice in water maze task and step-down test, reduced brain cell damage in the hippocampus, and attenuated the D-gal-induced production of MDA, ROS and advanced glycation end products (AGEs). At the same time, FGF21 also markedly renewed the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and total anti-oxidation capability (T-AOC), and decreased the enhanced total cholinesterase (TChE) activity in the brain of D-gal-treated mice. The expression of aldose reductase (AR), sorbitol dehydrogenase (SDH) and member-anchored receptor for AGEs (RAGE) declined significantly after FGF21 treatment. Furthermore, FGF21 suppressed inflamm-aging by inhibiting I kappa B alpha degradation and NF-kappa B p65 nuclear translocation. The expression levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-alpha and IL-6, decreased significantly. In conclusion, these results suggest that FGF21 protects the aging mice brain from D-gal-induced injury by attenuating oxidative stress damage and decreasing AGE formation. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. First Report on Megaselia scalaris Loew (Diptera: Phoridae) Infestation of the Invasive Pest Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in China
The invasive pest Spodoptera frugiperda first emerged in China in January 2019 and has, to date, migrated to 29 provinces and municipalities in China, causing heavy crop damage in large areas. As a response to this invasive species from the environment, some indigenous natural enemies have been discovered and reported after S. frugiperda invasion. In this paper, parasitic flies were collected and identified from S. frugiperda collected in the Yunnan, Guangxi, and Henan provinces and the Chongqing municipality in China. By using both conventional and molecular approaches, we were able to show that all the parasitic flies of S. frugiperda identified in the four regions were Megaselia. scalaris, and that they attacked the pest larvae and pupae. This is the first report on an indigenous Chinese Megaselia species that has parasitic ability against the invasive pest S. frugiperda, potentially providing new ideas for pest control in China
