Multivariate Analysis Identifies Eight Novel Loci Associated with Meat Productivity Traits in Sheep.
peer reviewedDespite their economic value, sheep remain relatively poorly studied animals in terms of the number of known loci and genes associated with commercially important traits. This gap in our knowledge can be filled in by performing new genome-wide association studies (GWAS) or by re-analyzing previously documented data using novel powerful statistical methods. This study is focused on the search for new loci associated with meat productivity and carcass traits in sheep. With a multivariate approach applied to publicly available GWAS results, we identified eight novel loci associated with the meat productivity and carcass traits in sheep. Using an in silico follow-up approach, we prioritized 13 genes in these loci. One of eight novel loci near the FAM3C and WNT16 genes has been replicated in an independent sample of Russian sheep populations (N = 108). The novel loci were added to our regularly updated database increasing the number of known loci to more than 140
Metody identyfikacji zagrożeń i ocen ryzyka używane w przemyśle naftowym i gazowniczym
The article discusses the preparation and implementation of a complete comprehensive safety assessment of a hazardous production facility, such as environmental risk management, the risks of designing and operating enterprises, taking into account the human factor, engineering psychology, the development of labour protection management systems and other risks. When assessing risks when implementing various processes, for example, the transport support of offshore fields, it makes sense to prepare a comprehensive safety assessment of the individual operational structures. In this case, bow tie analysis is used to examine risk by demonstrating a range of possible causes and effects. The method should be applied in a situation where it is difficult to perform a complete fault tree analysis or where the research is more focused on creating barriers or controls for each failure path. The methodology for this analysis is the same as preparing and implementing an HSE for whole enterprise. The possibility to apply the Pareto principle to estimate technogenic risk parameters of composite systems was studied. According to the Pareto principle there are a few important parameters among many unimportant ones. Hence, the main success is achieved not by the many actions, but the few. This is applicable to a wide range of research areas, including manufacturing, economical and physical ones. In a bow tie diagram, some calculations may be applied for example, in a situation where the paths are independent and the probability of certain outcomes is known. Such a quantitative assessment is necessary to ensure the effectiveness of control.Artykuł omawia przygotowanie i realizację pełnej, kompleksowej oceny bezpieczeństwa potencjalnie niebezpiecznej instalacji produkcyjnej, obejmujące zarządzanie ryzykiem środowiskowym, ryzyko związane z projektowaniem i prowadzeniem przedsiębiorstw, uwzględniając czynnik ludzki, psychologię inżynierii, rozwój systemów zarządzania ochroną pracy oraz inne rodzaje ryzyka.
Loci Associated with Negative Heterosis for Viability and Meat Productivity in Interspecific Sheep Hybrids
Negative heterosis can occur on different economically important traits, but the exact biological mechanisms of this phenomenon are still unknown. The present study focuses on determining the genetic factors associated with negative heterosis in interspecific hybrids between domestic sheep (Ovis aries) and argali (Ovis ammon). One locus (rs417431015) associated with viability and two loci (rs413302370, rs402808951) associated with meat productivity were identified. One gene (ARAP2) was prioritized for viability and three for meat productivity (PDE2A, ARAP1, and PCDH15). The loci associated with meat productivity were demonstrated to fit the overdominant inheritance model and could potentially be involved int negative heterosis mechanisms
An Assessment of Applicability of SNP Chip Developed for Domestic Goats in Genetic Studies of Caucasian Tur (Capra caucasica)
Caucasian tur (Capra caucasica) is native to Greater Caucasus Mountain Chain from Azerbaijan and Georgia in the East to Krasnodar region of Russia in the West. This species is divided into two subspecies (by some authors into species)—East-Caucasian tur and West-Caucasian tur and a subpopulation referred to as Mid-Caucasian tur. Up to date most of the genetic studies of Caucasian tur are based on mitochondrial DNA sequences and comprehensive investigation based on nuclear DNA is required for clarification of its genetic diversity and population structure. In our work, we assessed the applicability of Illumina Goat SNP50 BeadChip for genetic studies of Caucasian tur. Total of 15 specimens of Capra caucasica including East-Caucasian tur from Dagestan (E_TUR, n = 5), West-Caucasian tur from Karachay-Cherkessia (W_TUR, n = 5), and Mid-Caucasian tur from Kabardino-Balkaria (M_TUR, n = 5) were genotyped. After quality control, 5544 polymorphic loci, which were distributed all over 29 autosomes, were detected. The lowest number of SNPs was found on the 25th chromosome—68, and the highest on the 1st chromosome—348. It was shown that all the three groups of Caucasian tur clustered separately. A total of 2061 SNPs were common for all the populations, 594 were found only in W_TUR, 689 in E_TUR, and 530 in M_TUR. Individual heterozygosity ranged from 0.273 to 0.282 in W_TUR, from 0.217 to 0.253 in E_TUR, and from 0.255 to 0.283 in M_TUR. A clinal pattern of genetic variation was revealed. It was suggested to consider Caucasian tur a single species with several ecotypes. Thus, in our study we demonstrated that the Illumina Goat SNP50 BeadChip developed for domestic goats can be used as a useful tool for genetic studies of Caucasian tur
