Effect of perforated concave delta winglet vortex generators on heat transfer augmentation of fluid flow inside a rectangular channel: an experimental study
Compact heat exchanger with gas as a heat exchange mediumis widely used in power plants, automotive, air conditioning, and others. However, the gas has a low thermal conductivity resulting in high thermal resistance causing a low rate of heat transfer. Therefore an improvement to the convection heat transfer coefficient is necessary. One way to enhance the convection heat transfer coefficient is to use a longitudinal vortex generator. However, the increase in convection heat transfer coefficient is followed by an increase in pressure drop. Therefore, this work aims to improve the convection heat transfer coefficient with a low pressure drop. To achieve this goal, experiments were carried out by perforating a longitudinal vortex generator with a diameter of 5 mm with variations in holes number one, two and three. Two types of longitudinal vortex generators are compared. The experimental results show that the convection heat transfer coefficient for the case of perforated concave delta winglet vortex generator is only decreased by 1% from that without a hole, while the pressure drop is decreased by 11.6%
Associations between anxiety, body mass index, and sex hormones in women
Background: Several studies have shown a positive association between anxiety and obesity, particularly in women. We aimed to study whether sex hormone alterations related to obesity might play a role in this association. Patients and methods: Data for this study were obtained from a population-based cohort study (the LIFE-Adult-Study). A total of 3,124 adult women (970 premenopausal and 2,154 postmenopausal) were included into the analyses. The anxiety symptomatology was assessed using the GAD-7 questionnaire (cut-off ≥ 10 points). Sex hormones were measured from fasting serum samples. Results: We did not find significant differences in anxiety prevalence in premenopausal obese women compared with normal-weight controls (4.8% vs. 5.5%). Both obesity and anxiety symptomatology were separately associated with the same sex hormone alteration in premenopausal women: higher total testosterone level (0.97 ± 0.50 in obese vs. 0.86 ± 0.49 nmol/L in normal-weight women, p = 0.026 and 1.04 ± 0.59 in women with vs. 0.88 ± 0.49 nmol/L in women without anxiety symptomatology, p = 0.023). However, women with anxiety symptomatology had non-significantly higher estradiol levels than women without anxiety symptomatology (548.0 ± 507.6 vs. 426.2 ± 474.0 pmol/L), whereas obesity was associated with lower estradiol levels compared with those in normal-weight group (332.7 ± 386.5 vs. 470.8 ± 616.0 pmol/L). Women with anxiety symptomatology had also significantly higher testosterone and estradiol composition (p = 0.006). No associations of sex hormone levels and BMI with anxiety symptomatology in postmenopausal women were found. Conclusions: Although both obesity and anxiety symptomatology were separately associated with higher testosterone level, there was an opposite impact of anxiety and obesity on estradiol levels in premenopausal women. We did not find an evidence that the sex hormone alterations related to obesity are playing a significant role in anxiety symptomatology in premenopausal women. This could be the explanation why we did not find an association between obesity and anxiety. In postmenopausal women, other mechanisms seem to work than in the premenopausal group
Distributed Graph Clustering using Modularity and Map Equation
We study large-scale, distributed graph clustering. Given an undirected
graph, our objective is to partition the nodes into disjoint sets called
clusters. A cluster should contain many internal edges while being sparsely
connected to other clusters. In the context of a social network, a cluster
could be a group of friends. Modularity and map equation are established
formalizations of this internally-dense-externally-sparse principle. We present
two versions of a simple distributed algorithm to optimize both measures. They
are based on Thrill, a distributed big data processing framework that
implements an extended MapReduce model. The algorithms for the two measures,
DSLM-Mod and DSLM-Map, differ only slightly. Adapting them for similar quality
measures is straight-forward. We conduct an extensive experimental study on
real-world graphs and on synthetic benchmark graphs with up to 68 billion
edges. Our algorithms are fast while detecting clusterings similar to those
detected by other sequential, parallel and distributed clustering algorithms.
Compared to the distributed GossipMap algorithm, DSLM-Map needs less memory, is
up to an order of magnitude faster and achieves better quality.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures; v3: Camera ready for Euro-Par 2018, more

Key distillation from quantum channels using two-way communication protocols
We provide a general formalism to characterize the cryptographic properties
of quantum channels in the realistic scenario where the two honest parties
employ prepare and measure protocols and the known two-way communication
reconciliation techniques. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition to
distill a secret key using this type of schemes for Pauli qubit channels and
generalized Pauli channels in higher dimension. Our results can be applied to
standard protocols such as BB84 or six-state, giving a critical error rate of
20% and 27.6%, respectively. We explore several possibilities to enlarge these
bounds, without any improvement. These results suggest that there may exist
weakly entangling channels useless for key distribution using prepare and
measure schemes.Comment: 21 page
Shifts in the Properties of the Higgs Boson from Radion Mixing
We examine how mixing between the Standard Model Higgs boson, , and the
radion present in the Randall-Sundrum model of localized gravity modifies the
expected properties of the Higgs boson. In particular, we demonstrate that the
total and partial decay widths of the Higgs, as well as the branching
fraction, can be substantially altered from their Standard Model expectations.
The remaining branching fractions are modified less than \lsim 5% for most of
the parameter space volume.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figs., LaTex; revised versio
Radion effects on unitarity in gauge-boson scattering
The scalar field associated with fluctuations in the positions of the two
branes, the ``radion'', plays an important role determining the cosmology and
collider phenomenology of the Randall-Sundrum solution to the hierarchy
problem. It is now well known that the radion mass is of order the weak scale,
and that its couplings to standard model fields are order 1/TeV to the trace of
the energy momentum tensor. We calculate longitudinal vector boson scattering
amplitudes to explore the constraints on the radion mass and its coupling from
perturbative unitarity. The scattering cross section can indeed become
non-perturbative at energies prior to reaching the TeV brane cutoff scale, but
only when some curvature-Higgs mixing on the TeV brane is present. We show that
the coefficient of the curvature-Higgs mixing operator must be less than about
3 for the 4-d effective theory to respect perturbative unitarity up to the TeV
brane cutoff scale. Mass bounds on the Higgs boson and the radion are also
discussed.Comment: 17 pages, LaTeX, 5 eps figures, uses epsf.sty and axodraw.st
Electron affinity of Li: A state-selective measurement
We have investigated the threshold of photodetachment of Li^- leading to the
formation of the residual Li atom in the state. The excited residual
atom was selectively photoionized via an intermediate Rydberg state and the
resulting Li^+ ion was detected. A collinear laser-ion beam geometry enabled
both high resolution and sensitivity to be attained. We have demonstrated the
potential of this state selective photodetachment spectroscopic method by
improving the accuracy of Li electron affinity measurements an order of
magnitude. From a fit to the Wigner law in the threshold region, we obtained a
Li electron affinity of 0.618 049(20) eV.Comment: 5 pages,6 figures,22 reference
Unitarity constraints on the stabilized Randall-Sundrum scenario
Recently proposed stabilization mechanism of the Randall-Sundrum metric gives
rise to a scalar radion, which couples universally to matter with a weak
interaction ( TeV) scale. Demanding that gauge boson scattering as
described by the effective low enerrgy theory be unitary upto a given scale
leads to significant constraints on the mass of such a radion.Comment: 10 page Latex 2e file including 4 postscript figures. Accepted in

Radion effects on the production of an intermediate-mass scalar and Z at LEP II
We have studied the process, where
is the Higgs and/or radion bosons. The implications of the radion effects on
the preliminary ALEPH data are also discussed. The case of the lighter radion
than Higgs boson is disfavored by the ALEPH analyses of the tagged four-jet
data, since the radion predominantly decays into two gluon jets due to the QCD
trace anomaly. If the radion is highly degenerate in mass with the Higgs, the
cross section can be increased more than at one sigma level, with natural scale
of the vacuum expectation value of the radion.Comment: 10 pages, 1 Postscript figure, final version to appear in PR
Z boson pair production at LHC in a stabilized Randall-Sundrum scenario
We study the Z boson pair production at LHC in the Randall-Sundrum scenario
with the Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism. It is shown that
comprehensive account of the Kaluza-Klein graviton and radion effects is
crucial to probe the model: The KK graviton effects enhance the cross section
of on the whole so that the resonance peak of the radion becomes
easy to detect, whereas the RS effects on the process are
rather insignificant. The and invariant-mass distributions are presented
to study the dependence of the RS model parameters. The production of
longitudinally polarized Z bosons, to which the SM contributions are
suppressed, is mainly due to KK gravitons and the radion, providing one of the
most robust methods to signal the RS effects. The sensitivity bounds
on with are also obtained such that
the effective weak scale of order 5 TeV can be experimentally
probed.Comment: 28 pages, LaTex file, 18 eps figure
