Distinctive Economic Characteristics of Mountain Regions and Comprehensive Strategies for Sustainable Diversification

    Get PDF
Mountain regions are marked by unique economic traits that present both challenges and opportunities for sustainable diversification. Geographic isolation, limited infrastructure, and environmental vulnerabilities constrain development and create dependence on a narrow range of industries, particularly agriculture and tourism. This makes these regions especially vulnerable to economic volatility and environmental degradation. The hereby study explores the economic characteristics of mountain areas and proposes strategies for sustainable diversification to enhance financial resilience and reduce sectoral dependency. A mixed-methods approach combined quantitative analysis of industry composition, employment, income, and environmental indicators with qualitative case studies. These methods identified economic vulnerabilities and successful diversification strategies in various mountain regions. Regions with better market access and infrastructure successfully integrated higher-value activities such as agro-processing and niche tourism. The sustainable diversification of mountainous regions requires an integrated approach that harmonizes economic, social, and environmental objectives. By prioritizing context-specific strategies, fostering local engagement, promoting cross-regional collaboration, and embedding sustainability into all aspects of development, these regions can unlock their full potential. In doing so, not only will they contribute to national and regional economic growth, but they will also preserve their unique natural and cultural heritage for future generations. Tailored strategies are necessary to address the specific economic, social, and environmental contexts of mountain regions. Recommendations also include fostering public-private partnerships, infrastructure investment, improving education and vocational training, as well as promoting innovation in sustainable sectors

The paper aims to comprehensively examine the critical role of rural development in the broader framework of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Employing a robust mixed-methods research design, we explore global and regional rural development policies through a cross-cutting analysis. The primary objective is to uncover the profound and positive impact of specific interventions on critical SDG indicators, with a particular focus, on poverty reduction, improved access to education and healthcare, and significant progress in agricultural productivity. Our research uses a mixed-methods design, combining quantitative analysis, qualitative insights from community engagement sessions, and spatial analysis using GIS-based mapping. Preliminary results show a promising correlation between sustainable agricultural practices and meeting the SDGs, with a 30% reduction in food insecurity rates, while the qualitative insights indicate a notable increase in community cohesion and empowerment, highlighting the impact of rural development on well-being. Summarising these multi-faceted findings, our study highlights the symbiotic relationship between rural development initiatives and the SDGs. The imperative for context-specific and adapted strategies is evident from the spatial analyses, highlighting the need for a comprehensive, integrated and locally informed approach to achieve sustainable and equitable overall development. The paper advocates the recognition of rural development as a key driver for positive change in pursuit of the SDGs, providing valuable insights for policy makers, practitioners and researchers

Child institutionalization has been and continues to be an issue at the level of our country and not only. Children’s placement in institutions affects their development in all aspects. After reaching adulthood, many of those children who have gone through such an experience face difficulties in having an autonomous life, in integrating into community and into the labour market. The purpose of this paper was to capture some relevant aspects of the lives of some young people who had been institutionalized in the Cighid Hostel Hospital for Minors with Severe Disabilities, Bihor County. The study focused on highlighting the implications of institutionalization on the young people and the factors which determined their integration, even though they were labelled as ‘hopeless’. In the study 9 young people with mild and moderate mental deficiencies were included, who were institutionalized in the communist period at the Cighid Hostel Hospital and who, at present, benefit from the services of the Romanian and Alsterdorf German Association of from Oradea. The focus group method was used. The discussions focused on collecting information on the following areas of interest: aspects of the young people’s lives in the communist period/aspects of their lives in the period after 1989, how do these young people perceive institutionalization, school, their work, the support network, friendships, these young people’s life itinerary, wrong/inappropriate attitudes towards people with disabilities (prejudices, discriminatory actions), how they perceive their future. Our study results sustain that institutionalization determines young people’s development, with repercussions throughout their lives. Nevertheless, the study outlines a positive image of young people, who demonstrate responsibility and wish to contribute, as much as they can, to the continuous improvement of their lives and of those from their entourage. All these aspects are possible only with a constant support from the community services and from the specialists assisting these young people
