The Structure of the Non-SUSY Baryonic Branch of Klebanov-Strassler
We study the two-dimensional space of supergravity solutions corresponding to
non-supersymmetric deformations of the baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler.
By combining analytical methods with a numerical survey of the parameter space,
we find that this solution space includes as limits the softly-broken N=1
solutions of Gubser et al. and those of Dymarsky and Kuperstein. We also
identify a one-dimensional family of solutions corresponding to a natural
non-supersymmetric generalisation of Klebanov-Strassler, and one corresponding
to the limit in which supersymmetry is completely absent, even in the far UV.
For almost all of the parameter space we find indications that much of the
structure of the supersymmetric baryonic branch survives.Comment: 29 pages plus appendices, 11 figure
Integrable Open Spin Chains in Defect Conformal Field Theory
We demonstrate that the one-loop dilatation generator for the scalar sector
of a certain perturbation of N=4 Super Yang-Mills with fundamentals is the
Hamiltonian of an integrable spin chain with open boundary conditions. The
theory is a supersymmetric defect conformal field theory (dCFT) with the
fundamentals in hypermultiplets confined to a codimension one defect. We obtain
a K-matrix satisfying a suitably generalized form of the boundary Yang-Baxter
equation, study the Bethe ansatz equations and demonstrate how Dirichlet and
Neumann boundary conditions arise in field theory, and match to existing
results in the plane wave limit.Comment: 26 pages, LaTeX. v2: references added, typos correcte
Low-Energy Theorems from Holography
In the context of gauge/gravity duality, we verify two types of gauge theory
low-energy theorems, the dilation Ward identities and the decoupling of heavy
flavor. First, we provide an analytic proof of non-trivial dilation Ward
identities for a theory holographically dual to a background with gluon
condensate (the self-dual Liu--Tseytlin background). In this way an important
class of low-energy theorems for correlators of different operators with the
trace of the energy-momentum tensor is established, which so far has been
studied in field theory only. Another low-energy relationship, the so-called
decoupling theorem, is numerically shown to hold universally in three
holographic models involving both the quark and the gluon condensate. We show
this by comparing the ratio of the quark and gluon condensates in three
different examples of gravity backgrounds with non-trivial dilaton flow. As a
by-product of our study, we also obtain gauge field condensate contributions to
meson transport coefficients.Comment: 32 pages, 4 figures, two references added, typos remove
The Non-SUSY Baryonic Branch: Soft Supersymmetry Breaking of N=1 Gauge Theories
We study a non-supersymmetric deformation of the field theory dual to the
baryonic branch of Klebanov-Strassler. Using a combination of analytical
(series expansions) and numerical methods we construct non-supersymmetric
backgrounds that smoothly interpolate between the desired UV and IR behaviors.
We calculate various observables of the field theory and propose a picture of
soft breaking by gaugino masses that is consistent with the various
calculations on the string side.Comment: 32 pages plus many appendixes. One figur
Weak coupling large-N transitions at finite baryon density
We study thermodynamics of free SU(N) gauge theory with a large number of
colours and flavours on a three-sphere, in the presence of a baryon number
chemical potential. Reducing the system to a holomorphic large-N matrix
integral, paying specific attention to theories with scalar flavours (squarks),
we identify novel third-order deconfining phase transitions as a function of
the chemical potential. These transitions in the complex large-N saddle point
configurations are interpreted as "melting" of baryons into (s)quarks. They are
triggered by the exponentially large (~ exp(N)) degeneracy of light baryon-like
states, which include ordinary baryons, adjoint-baryons and baryons made from
different spherical harmonics of flavour fields on the three-sphere. The phase
diagram of theories with scalar flavours terminates at a phase boundary where
baryon number diverges, representing the onset of Bose condensation of squarks.Comment: 38 pages, 7 figure
Thermodynamics and Instabilities of a Strongly Coupled Anisotropic Plasma
We extend our analysis of a IIB supergravity solution dual to a spatially
anisotropic finite-temperature N=4 super Yang-Mills plasma. The solution is
static, possesses an anisotropic horizon, and is completely regular. The full
geometry can be viewed as a renormalization group flow from an AdS geometry in
the ultraviolet to a Lifshitz-like geometry in the infrared. The anisotropy can
be equivalently understood as resulting from a position-dependent theta-term or
from a non-zero number density of dissolved D7-branes. The holographic stress
tensor is conserved and anisotropic. The presence of a conformal anomaly plays
an important role in the thermodynamics. The phase diagram exhibits homogeneous
and inhomogeneous (i.e. mixed) phases. In some regions the homogeneous phase
displays instabilities reminiscent of those of weakly coupled plasmas. We
comment on similarities with QCD at finite baryon density and with the
phenomenon of cavitation.Comment: 62 pages, 13 figures; v2: typos fixed, added reference
The Baryonic Phase in Holographic Descriptions of the QCD Phase Diagram
We study holographic models of the QCD temperature-chemical potential phase
diagram based on the D3/D7 system with chiral symmetry breaking. The baryonic
phase may be included through linked D5-D7 systems. In a previous analysis of a
model with a running gauge coupling a baryonic phase was shown to exist to
arbitrarily large chemical potential. Here we explore this phase in a more
generic phenomenological setting with a step function dilaton profile. The
change in dilaton generates a linear confining potential and opposes
the screening effect of temperature. We show that the persistence of the
baryonic phase depends on the step size and that QCD-like phase diagrams can be
described. The baryonic phase's existence is qualitatively linked to the
existence of confinement in Wilson loop computations in the background.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure
Sum Rules from an Extra Dimension
Using the gravity side of the AdS/CFT correspondence, we investigate the
analytic properties of thermal retarded Green's functions for scalars,
conserved currents, the stress tensor, and massless fermions. We provide some
results concerning their large and small frequency behavior and their pole
structure. From these results, it is straightforward to prove the validity of
various sum rules on the field theory side of the duality. We introduce a novel
contraction mapping we use to study the large frequency behavior of the Green's
functions.Comment: v2: 23 pages (plus appendix), revised presentation, discussion of

Probe Branes, Time-dependent Couplings and Thermalization in AdS/CFT
We present holographic descriptions of thermalization in conformal field
theories using probe D-branes in AdS X S space-times. We find that the induced
metrics on Dp-brane worldvolumes which are rotating in an internal sphere
direction have horizons with characteristic Hawking temperatures even if there
is no black hole in the bulk AdS. The AdS/CFT correspondence applied to such
systems indeed reveals thermal properties such as Brownian motions and AC
conductivities in the dual conformal field theories. We also use this framework
to holographically analyze time-dependent systems undergoing a quantum quench,
where parameters in quantum field theories, such as a mass or a coupling
constant, are suddenly changed. We confirm that this leads to thermal behavior
by demonstrating the formation of apparent horizons in the induced metric after
a certain time.Comment: LaTeX, 47 pages, 14 figures; Typos corrected and references added

The traditional, the ideal and the unexplored: sport coaches’ social identity constructs in film
The sport coaching construct within mainstream fiction films has been described as stereotypical, reinforcing the traditional notion of the sport coach as a technician who conquers all, or a hapless individual, open to ridicule from athletes and fans. Although this depiction is also prevalent in some independent fiction films and documentaries, film sub genres such as social realism and “fly on the wall” style documentaries move away from the “Hollywood sports film structure” towards stories that focus on everyday coaching moments. Through a critical discourse analysis of two U.K. films (Bend it Like Beckham and Twenty Four Seven), both featuring sport coaches in central roles, we reflect critically on these mass media multidimensional representations in terms of the sport coaching professionalisation agenda in the U.K. and the social identification process of sport coaches within their sporting environments.
