    The 2004 UTfit Collaboration Report on the Status of the Unitarity Triangle in the Standard Model

    Using the latest determinations of several theoretical and experimental parameters, we update the Unitarity Triangle analysis in the Standard Model. The basic experimental constraints come from the measurements of |V_ub/V_cb|, Delta M_d, the lower limit on Delta M_s, epsilon_k, and the measurement of the phase of the B_d - anti B_d mixing amplitude through the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B^0 to J/psi K^0 decays. In addition, we consider the direct determination of alpha, gamma, 2 beta + gamma and cos(2 beta) from the measurements of new CP-violating quantities, recently performed at the B factories. We also discuss the opportunities offered by improving the precision of the various physical quantities entering in the determination of the Unitarity Triangle parameters.     Flavor SU(3) analysis of charmless B meson decays to two pseudoscalar mesons

    Global fits to charmless B --> PP decays in the framework of flavor SU(3) symmetry are updated and improved without reference to the \sin2\beta measured from the charmonium decay modes. Fit results directly constrain the (\bar\rho,\bar\eta) vertex of the unitarity triangle, and are used to predict the branching ratios and CP asymmetries of all decay modes, including those of the B_s system. Different schemes of SU(3) breaking in decay amplitude sizes are analyzed. The major breaking effect between strangeness-conserving and strangeness-changing decays can be accounted for by including a ratio of decay constants in tree and color-suppressed amplitudes.     Comments on Percrocuta carnifex (Carnivora, Percrocutidae) based on new fossil material from the Nagri Formation (Middle Siwaliks) of Hasnot, Pakistan

    New dentary material of Percrocuta carnifex (Pilgrim, 1913) from the Nagri Formation ofHasnot, Pakistan, is described. Specimens of this species from the Siwalik continental deposits described by previous authors are discussed in detail. In addition to the taxonomic description of the new material, the occurrence and stratigraphic position of this species within the Siwalik Hills are re-evaluated. Except for the holotype, the specimens assigned to this species are very fragmentary. The newly discovered material, a right mandibular ramus containing teeth, is the best preserved specimen found to date. The comparative analysis, based on tooth morphology and dimensions of previously reported specimens and of the specimen studied here, suggests that this species is restricted to the Chinji and Nagri formations. Finally, the dental morphological features of the studied specimen and those of other species of Percrocuta are compared, and then the phylogenetic relationship between these species is discussed. The described specimen is thus important for the taxonomic, stratigraphic and phylogenetic knowledge of P. carnifex from the Siwaliks

    Forward-backward and isospin asymmetry for B -> K* l+ l- decay in the standard model and in supersymmetry

    We discuss two dedicated observables in exclusive B -> K* l+ l- decay that can be used to study effects of physics beyond the standard model, namely the forward-backward asymmetry in the lepton spectrum and the isospin-asymmetry between decays of charged and neutral B mesons. We consider the region of large recoil-energy (i.e. small invariant mass of the lepton pair), and employ the QCD factorization approach to exclusive B meson decays. Sub-leading effects in the heavy quark mass expansion have been taken into account for the calculation of the isospin-asymmetry. We give predictions for decay asymmetries in the standard model, and its supersymmetric extension with minimal flavor violation, using parameter values allowed by current experimental constraints on B->X_s gamma decay.Comment: 21 pages, LaTeX with 6 figures, added reference

    Can there be any new physics in b -> d penguins

    We analyze the possibility of observing new physics effects in the b→db \to d penguin amplitudes. For this purpose, we consider the decay mode B→K0Kˉ0B \to K^0 \bar K^0 , which has only b→db \to d penguin contributions. Using the QCD factorization approach, we find very tiny CP violating effects in the standard model for this process. Furthermore, we show that the minimal supersymmetric standard model with LRLR mass insertion and R-parity violating supersymmetric model can provide substantial CP violation effects. Observation of sizable CP violation in this mode would be a clear signal of new physics.Comment: Published versio

    Technique for early reliability prediction of software components using behaviour models

    Behaviour models are the most commonly used input for predicting the reliability of a software system at the early design stage. A component behaviour model reveals the structure and behaviour of the component during the execution of system-level functionalities. There are various challenges related to component reliability prediction at the early design stage based on behaviour models. For example, most of the current reliability techniques do not provide fine-grained sequential behaviour models of individual components and fail to consider the loop entry and exit points in the reliability computation. Moreover, some of the current techniques do not tackle the problem of operational data unavailability and the lack of analysis results that can be valuable for software architects at the early design stage. This paper proposes a reliability prediction technique that, pragmatically, synthesizes system behaviour in the form of a state machine, given a set of scenarios and corresponding constraints as input. The state machine is utilized as a base for generating the component-relevant operational data. The state machine is also used as a source for identifying the nodes and edges of a component probabilistic dependency graph (CPDG). Based on the CPDG, a stack-based algorithm is used to compute the reliability. The proposed technique is evaluated by a comparison with existing techniques and the application of sensitivity analysis to a robotic wheelchair system as a case study. The results indicate that the proposed technique is more relevant at the early design stage compared to existing works, and can provide a more realistic and meaningful prediction

    Direct CP Violation, Branching Ratios and Form Factors B→πB \to \pi, B→KB \to K in BB Decays

    The B→πB \to \pi and B→KB \to K transitions involved in hadronic B decays are investigated in a phenomenological way through the framework of QCD factorization. By comparing our results with experimental branching ratios from the BELLE, BABAR and CLEO Collaborations for all the B decays including either a pion or a kaon, we propose boundaries for the transition form factors B→πB \to \pi and B→KB \to K depending on the CKM matrix element parameters ρ\rho and η\eta. From this analysis, the form factors required to reproduce the experimental data for branching ratios are FB→π=0.31±0.12F^{B \to \pi}= 0.31 \pm 0.12 and FB→K=0.37±0.13F^{B \to K}= 0.37\pm 0.13. We calculate the direct CP violating asymmetry parameter, aCPa_{CP}, for B→π+π−πB \to \pi^{+} \pi^{-} \pi and B→π+π−KB \to \pi^{+} \pi^{-} K decays, in the case where ρ−ω\rho-\omega mixing effects are taken into account. Based on these results, we find that the direct CP asymmetry for B−→π+π−π−B^{-} \to \pi^{+} \pi^{-} \pi^{-}, Bˉ0→π+π−π0\bar{B}^{0} \to \pi^{+} \pi^{-} \pi^{0}, B−→π+π−K−B^{-} \to \pi^{+} \pi^{-} K^{-}, and Bˉ0→π+π−Kˉ0\bar{B}^{0} \to \pi^{+} \pi^{-} \bar{K}^{0}, reaches its maximum when the invariant mass π+π−\pi^{+} \pi^{-} is in the vicinity of the ω\omega meson mass.     A mid-IR survey of the L 1641-N region with ISOCAM

    We present an analysis of the L 1641 outflow region using broad-band and narrow-band imaging data at mid-infrared wavelengths from ISOCAM. We detect a total of 34 sources in the 7.65â€Č7.65^{\prime} x 8.40â€Č8.40^{\prime} region covered by the broad-band filters. Four of these sources have no reported detection in previous studies of the region. We find that the source previously identified as the near-IR counter-part to the IRAS detected point-source (IRAS 05338-0624) is not the brightest source in the wavelength region of the IRAS 12 \micron\ filter. We find instead that a nearby object (within the beam of IRAS and not detected at near-IR wavelengths) outshines all others sources in the area by a factor of ∌\sim2. We submit that this source is likely to be the IRAS detected point source. A comparison of the near-IR (J-H vs H-K) and mid-IR (J-K vs [6.7 um]-[14 um]) color-color plots shows only four sources with excess emission at near-IR wavelengths, but atleast 85% of all sources show excess emission at mid-IR wavelengths. The CVF spectra suggest a range of evolutionary status in the program stars ranging from embedded YSOs to the young disks. When combined with optical and near-IR age estimates, these results show active current star-formation in the region that has been on-going for at least 2 Myr.Comment: Submitted to ApJ.     Knowledge, Perception and Attitude of Community Pharmacists towards Generic Medicines in Karachi, Pakistan: A Qualitative Insight

    Purpose: In an era of escalating healthcare costs and ageing population, there is a need for costeffective measures. This study was aimed to investigate the knowledge, perception and attitude of community pharmacists towards generic medicines. Methods: A  qualitative methodology was adopted. Snowball sampling technique was used to identify eight community pharmacists. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the pharmacists until the point of saturation was obtained. The interviews, which were audio-taped and transcribed verbatim, were evaluated by thematic content analysis and further verified by other authors’ analyses. Results: Thematic content analysis identified three major themes: knowledge of generic medicines,perception towards generic medicines, and attitude towards generic medicines. All the pharmacist  showed good understanding and positive perception towards generic medicines. Mixed responses were observed regarding dispensing of locally manufactured medicines. Low cost was cited as the major determinant in dispensing locally manufactured generics. Conclusion: The current study showed good knowledge and perception towards generic medicines among community pharmacists in Karachi, Pakistan. It also highlighted mixed attitudes towards generic medicine dispensing. A 24-hour mandatory presence of professionally qualified pharmacists in community pharmacies can boost the confidence of doctors in pharmacists and enhance generic substitution.Keywords:   Community pharmacist, Generic Medicine, Pakistan, Qualitative methodolog

    APC-ÎČ-catenin-TCF signaling silences the intestinal guanylin-GUCY2C tumor suppressor axis.

    Sporadic colorectal cancer initiates with mutations in APC or its degradation target ÎČ-catenin, producing TCF-dependent nuclear transcription driving tumorigenesis. The intestinal epithelial receptor, GUCY2C, with its canonical paracrine hormone guanylin, regulates homeostatic signaling along the crypt-surface axis opposing tumorigenesis. Here, we reveal that expression of the guanylin hormone, but not the GUCY2C receptor, is lost at the earliest stages of transformation in APC-dependent tumors in humans and mice. Hormone loss, which silences GUCY2C signaling, reflects transcriptional repression mediated by mutant APC-ÎČ-catenin-TCF programs in the nucleus. These studies support a pathophysiological model of intestinal tumorigenesis in which mutant APC-ÎČ-catenin-TCF transcriptional regulation eliminates guanylin expression at tumor initiation, silencing GUCY2C signaling which, in turn, dysregulates intestinal homeostatic mechanisms contributing to tumor progression. They expand the mechanistic paradigm for colorectal cancer from a disease of irreversible mutations in APC and ÎČ-catenin to one of guanylin hormone loss whose replacement, and reconstitution of GUCY2C signaling, could prevent tumorigenesis
