The objective of this work was to study the drying kinetics of four coffee berry clones Coffea canephora species dried in ground pavement and to fit different mathematical models to different experimental data selecting the one that best represents the phenomenon. Have been used coffee berry of clones: Cpafro 194, Cpafro 193, Cpafro 167 and Cpafro 180, harvested at moisture content of 1.20; 1.32; 1.51 e 1.46 (decimal d.b.), respectively. The drying continued in ground pavement until achieved the moisture content of 0.13 (decimal d.b.). Ten mathematical models cited in the literature were fitted to the experimental data in order to represent the drying process. Based on the statistical parameters it can be concluded that the Verma, Dois Termos and Aproximação da Difusão models represent well the drying of four coffee berry clones, and beyond these for the clone Cpafro 167, the Thompson, Page, Newton, Logarítmico, Henderson e Pabis and Exponencial de Dois Termos models also shown in satisfactory description of the phenomenon; the drying time in ground pavement of coffee berry clones Cpafro 194, Cpafro 193, Cpafro 167 and Cpafro 180, until the moisture content of 0.13 (decimal d.b.) was 189.5 hours

Anaemia among patients with heart failure and preserved or reduced ejection fraction: results from the SENIORS study

AIMS: Anaemia is a co-morbidity frequently seen in patients with heart failure (HF) and reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Its presence carries adverse prognostic effects. The effects of anaemia have not been extensively investigated in patients with preserved or only mildly reduced LVEF. We sought to investigate prevalence and incidence of anaemia in patients with HF irrespective of whether reduced or preserved ejection fraction are present. In addition, we sought to study the effects of nebivolol on the development of anaemia. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed data from 2069 patients randomized to nebivolol or placebo in the SENIORS study, 391 (10.0%) of whom were anaemic. Anaemia was similarly common in patients with LVEF=35% and those with LVEF>35% (19.0 vs. 18.7%, P= 0.89). Anaemic patients were older, had lower diastolic blood pressure, and worse kidney function (all P35%: HR 1.47, 95% CI 1.09-2.00, P= 0.012]. After multivariable adjustment, haemoglobin remained an independent predictor of the primary outcome in this cohort of patients (HR 0.94 per 1 g/dL increase, 95% CI 0.89-0.99, P= 0.017). CONCLUSIONS: Anaemia is an independent predictor of death or hospitalization for cardiovascular reasons among elderly patients with chronic HF and reduced or preserved/mildly reduced LVEF. Nebivolol does not affect haemoglobin values during follow-up

Beta blockade with nebivolol in elderly heart failure patients with impaired and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction: Data From SENIORS (Study of Effects of Nebivolol Intervention on Outcomes and Rehospitalization in Seniors With Heart Failure)

Background: Beta-blockers are established drugs in patients with HF and impaired EF, but their value in preserved EF is unclear. Methods: We studied 2,111 patients; 1,359 (64%) had impaired (=35%) EF (mean 28.7%) and 752 (36%) had preserved (>35%) EF (mean 49.2%). The effect of nebivolol was investigated in these 2 groups, and it was compared to explore the interaction of EF with outcome. Follow-up was 21 months; the primary end point was all-cause mortality or cardiovascular hospitalizations. Results: Patients with preserved EF were more often women (49.9% vs. 29.8%) and had less advanced HF, more hypertension, and fewer prior myocardial infarctions (all p < 0.001). During follow-up, the primary end point occurred in 465 patients (34.2%) with impaired EF and in 235 patients (31.2%) with preserved EF. The effect of nebivolol on the primary end point (hazard ratio [HR] of nebivolol vs. placebo) was 0.86 (95% confidence interval: 0.72 to 1.04) in patients with impaired EF and 0.81 (95% confidence interval: 0.63 to 1.04) in preserved EF (p = 0.720 for subgroup interaction). Effects on all secondary end points were similar between groups (HR for all-cause mortality 0.84 and 0.91, respectively), and no p value for interaction wa
