Three-dimensional shape measurement of a transparent object using a rangefinding approach

    Get PDF
This paper describes a non-contact optical measuring approach by which to measure the three-dimensional (3D) shape of a transparent object such as a glass panel or an acrylic plate. In conventional approaches to obtain the 3D shape of a transparent object, contact-type sensors have been widely used. However, the measurement accuracy of contact-type sensors is susceptible to the influence of various factors. In this paper, we propose a novel triangulation-based rangefinding approach that can be applied to the 3D shape of a transparent object or to an opaque object. The rangefinder is based on the fact that the light projected onto the surface of a transparent object is in part reflected by the surface, though the majority of the projected light is transmitted through the surface. From the experimental results, the proposed rangefinding approach has the advantage that it can easily measure the 3D-shape of an object if the object reflects or transmits light, depending on its location. As a result, we conclude that the proposed approach has great potential for a wide range of industrial applications.</p

A new method for 3-D shape measurement and surface reflectance of an object with rangefinder

An object for computer graphics application requires the following two information: the three dimensional (3D) shape and surface reflectance property of the object. We proposed a 3D shape and surface reflectance measurement system using the new sensor, which can detect the incidence position and the angle of the light simultaneously. Experimental results successfully demonstrate the efficacy of the method.</p

A new sensor system for simultaneously detecting the position and incident angle of a light spot

    Get PDF
The present paper describes a newly devised sensor, which has the ability to detect the two-dimensional position and the one-dimensional angle of a light spot simultaneously. Ordinary laser-based measurement systems utilize CCD or PSD sensors. These conventional sensors can detect only a light spot's position. When the sensor can detect the incident angle of a light spot as well as the position, the sensor has a wide range of applicability. The sensor consists of two linear array-type sensors whose depth positions are slightly different. We have designed and built a prototype sensor system. We experimentally verified the practicable accuracy of the present sensor system. We also applied the present sensor system to two typical laser-based measurement systems: 2-D position measurement, and 3-D shape measurement for specular objects. Experimental results show that the sensor system was applicable to a laser-based measurement system. </p

The present paper describes a newly proposed method for simultaneously measuring 3D shape and surface reflectance of an object using a laser rangefinder. The original work of this method lies in the advantage that the proposed method measures the surface reflectance using the object itself that is used for the 3D shape measurement. Experimental results show that the proposed method was applicable to noncontact industrial inspection, robot vision in automatic assembly, and reverse engineering.</p

3D shape recognition system by ultrasonic sensor array and genetic algorithms

    Get PDF
This paper describes 3D shape recognition system using ultrasound pressure data and a Genetic Algorithm. The ultrasonic 3D shape recognition system using has commonly used a Neural Network (NN). However, a NN perform poorly when lacking learned data. In order to overcome this problem when using a NN, we here attempt to replace the NN with a Genetic Algorithm (GA). Unlike a NN, the GA can recognize shapes without depending on learned data. Experimental results demonstrate that the recognition ratios of the proposed recognition system using the GA are higher than that of a conventional 3D shape recognition system using a NN. Therefore, it is shown that our ultrasonic 3D shape recognition system is effective for many industrial applications. </p

This paper describes a new sensor with the ability of simultaneously detecting the position and the incident angle of a light. The basic principle is to detect the difference in the peak positions between two image sensors. We have designed and build three kinds of prototype of the proposed sensor. We experimentally verified the practicable accuracy of the proposed position sensors.</p

Spiral Structure in WZ Sagittae around the 2001 Outburst Maximum

Intermediate resolution phase-resolved spectra of WZ Sge were obtained on five consecutive nights (July 23 -- 27) covering the initial stage of the 2001 superoutburst. Double-peaked emission lines of He\textsc{II} at 4686 \AA, which were absent on July 23, emerged on July 24 together with emission lines of C\textsc{III} / N\textsc{III} Bowen blend. Analyses of the He\textsc{II} emission lines using the Doppler tomography revealed an asymmetric spiral structure on the accretion disk. This finding demonstrates that spiral shocks with a very short orbital period can arise during the initial stage of an outburst and may be present in all SU UMa stars.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PAS

Usefulness of helical computed tomography in diagnosing pulmonary vein stenosis in infants.

We investigated the usefulness of helical computed tomography(CT)in the morphological diagnosis of pulmonary vein stenosis, particularly that in infants and small children. In total, 20 helical CT examinations were performed in 10 post-operative cases of Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Drainage(TAPVD), 3 cases of single right ventricle, and 1 case of single left ventricle. In all cases, distinct morphological imaging was possible. Pulmonary vein stenosis could be categorized into three types: (1)stenosis from the anastomosis of the common pulmonary vein (CPV)-the left atrium (LA) to the peripheral pulmonary vein; (2) stenosis only at the anastomosis of CPV-LA; and (3) stenosis due to compression by nearby organs. Coronal views by multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) provided morphological information along the up-down direction of the body axis. Morphological diagnosis of pulmonary vein stenosis is important in deciding prognosis and therapeutic regimens, and helical CT was considered useful for such diagnosis in our 14 young patients.</p

Inhibition of microRNA-33b in humanized mice ameliorates nonalcoholic steatohepatitis

マイクロRNA-33bの阻害は非アルコール性脂肪肝炎を改善する --核酸医薬による治療応用へ--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2023-06-13.Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) can lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma in their advanced stages; however, there are currently no approved therapies. Here, we show that microRNA (miR)-33b in hepatocytes is critical for the development of NASH. miR-33b is located in the intron of sterol regulatory element–binding transcription factor 1 and is abundantly expressed in humans, but absent in rodents. miR-33b knock-in (KI) mice, which have a miR-33b sequence in the same intron of sterol regulatory element–binding transcription factor 1 as humans and express miR-33b similar to humans, exhibit NASH under high-fat diet feeding. This condition is ameliorated by hepatocyte-specific miR-33b deficiency but unaffected by macrophage-specific miR-33b deficiency. Anti-miR-33b oligonucleotide improves the phenotype of NASH in miR-33b KI mice fed a Gubra Amylin NASH diet, which induces miR-33b and worsens NASH more than a high-fat diet. Anti-miR-33b treatment reduces hepatic free cholesterol and triglyceride accumulation through up-regulation of the lipid metabolism–related target genes. Furthermore, it decreases the expression of fibrosis marker genes in cultured hepatic stellate cells. Thus, inhibition of miR-33b using nucleic acid medicine is a promising treatment for NASH
