    The Bank of Japan's Monetary Policy and Bank Risk Premiums in the Money Market

    Using the interest rates on negotiable certificates of deposit issued by individual banks, we first show that under the Bank of Japan's zero interest rate policy and quantitative monetary easing policy, not just the levels of money market rates but also the dispersion of rates across banks have fallen to near zero. We next show that the fall in the dispersion of the rates is not fully explained by a fall in the dispersion of credit ratings of the banks.     Dominant non-local superconducting proximity effect due to electron-electron interaction in a ballistic double nanowire

    Cooper pair splitting (CPS) can induce non-local correlation between two normal conductors coupling to a superconductor. CPS into a double one-dimensional electron gas is an appropriate platform for extracting large amount of entangled electron pairs and one of the key ingredients for engineering Majorana Fermions with no magnetic field. Here we study CPS using a Josephson junction of a gate-tunable ballistic InAs double nanowire. The measured switching current into the two nanowires significantly larger than sum of that into the respective nanowires, indicating the inter-wire superconductivity dominant compared to the intra-wire superconductivity. From dependence on the number of propagating channels in the nanowires, the observed CPS is assigned to one-dimensional electron-electron interaction. Our results will pave the way for utilizing one-dimensional electron-electron interaction to reveal physics of high-efficient CPS and engineer Majorana Fermions in double nanowire systems via CPS

    Free-bound excitation and predissociation of ytterbium dimers near the ¹S₀-¹P₁ atomic transition

    A continuous excitation band of a free-bound photoassociation transition of ytterbium atoms is observed as a red wing of the ¹S₀-¹P₁ atomic line at 399 nm for a hot thermal vapor. The excitation to the 0u⁺ molecular state is observed by monitoring fluorescence from the ³P₁ state atoms, which allows us to detect the production of Yb₂ molecules with high sensitivity. The photoassociation is characterized in comparison with transitions to atomic Rydberg states. The time profile of the fluorescence signal suggests that the 0u⁺ molecular state predissociates with states correlating to the ¹S₀+³D₂ atomic states

    Analysis of volatile organic compounds released from human lung cancer cells and from the urine of tumor-bearing mice

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Backgrounds</p> <p>A potential strategy for the diagnosis of lung cancer is to exploit the distinct metabolic signature of this disease by way of biomarkers found in different sample types. In this study, we investigated whether specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) could be detected in the culture medium of the lung cancer cell line A549 in addition to the urine of mice implanted with A549 cells.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Several VOCs were found at significantly increased or decreased concentrations in the headspace of the A549 cell culture medium as compared with the culture medium of two normal lung cell lines. We also analyzed the urine of mice implanted with A549 cells and several VOCs were also found to be significantly increased or decreased relative to urine obtained from control mice. It was also revealed that seven VOCs were found at increased concentrations in both sample types. These compounds were found to be dimethyl succinate, 2-pentanone, phenol, 2-methylpyrazine, 2-hexanone, 2-butanone and acetophenone.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Both sample types produce distinct biomarker profiles, and VOCs have potential to distinguish between true- and false-positive screens for lung cancer.</p

    Uptake of biodegradable poly(γ-glutamic acid) nanoparticles and antigen presentation by dendritic cells in vivo

    AbstractPoly(γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA) nanoparticles (NPs) carrying antigens have been shown to induce potent antigen-specific immune responses. However, in vivo delivery of γ-PGA NPs to dendritic cells (DCs), a key regulator of immune responses, still remains unclear. In this study, γ-PGA NPs were examined for their uptake by DCs and subsequent migration from the skin to the regional lymph nodes (LNs) in mice. After subcutaneous injection of fluorescein 5-isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled NPs or FITC-ovalbumin (OVA)-carrying NPs (FITC-OVA-NPs), DCs migrated from the skin to the LNs and maturated, resulting in the upregulation of the costimulatory molecules CD80 and CD86 and the chemokine receptor CCR7. However, the migrated DCs were not detected in the spleen. FITC-OVA-NPs were found to be taken up by skin-derived CD103+ DCs, and the processed antigen peptides were cross-presented by the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecule of DCs. Furthermore, significant activation of antigen-specific CD8+ T cells was observed in mice immunized with OVA-carrying NPs (OVA-NPs) but not with OVA alone or OVA with an aluminum adjuvant. The antigen-specific CD8+ T cells were induced within 7 days after immunization with OVA-NPs. Thus, γ-PGA NPs carrying various antigens may have great potential as an antigen-delivery system and vaccine adjuvant in vivo

    Outcomes of Patients with Pulmonary Atresia with Intact Ventricular Septum Reaching Adulthood

    Background: There is limited information on outcomes of adult patients with pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum (PA-IVS) due to the low incidence of disease and the large variation of surgical histories. Methods: Among 58 patients with repaired PA-IVS, a total of 32 patients aged ≥16 years and who were followed at our institution between January 2003 and December 2018 were reviewed. Surgical history, clinical outcomes, and laboratory, echocardiographic and electrocardiographic data were obtained by chart review. Results: Follow-up was from the age of 16 years and the median age at the latest follow-up was 23.7 years. Twenty-four patients had undergone biventricular repair (BVR), 3 had undergone one-and-a half ventricular repair (1.5VR), and 5 had undergone univentricular repair. Over a median follow-up period of 7.7 years (interquartile range: 4.1–11.0 years), 1 BVR patient died suddenly and 7 patients had heart failure. Arrhythmias were present in 5 patients. Ten patients underwent surgical re-interventions, including 4 BVR take-downs with conversion to 1.5VR and 3 Fontan conversions. Overall survival, heart failure-free, arrhythmia-free, and surgical re-intervention-free rates at 5 years and 10 years from the age of 16 years were 96.2% (95% confidence interval [CI], 77.2–99.4) and 96.2% (95% CI, 77.2– 99.4), 81.4% (95% CI, 62.1–92.1) and 74.6% (95%CI, 52.3–88.7), 88.7% (95% CI, 70.1–96.3) and 75.9% (95% CI, 51.7–90.2), and 80.7% (95% CI, 60.8–91.8) and 70.8% (95% CI, 49.7–85.7), respectively. Conclusion: Adults with PA-IVS have preserved long-term survival regardless of the early operative strategy, while they are at risk for heart failure, arrhythmia, and surgical re-intervention. Thus, detailed and continued follow-up is mandatory for all PA-IVS patients from childhood to adulthood

    Effective Monotherapy with Amrubicin for a Refractory Extrapulmonary Small-Cell Carcinoma of the Liver

    Small-cell carcinoma of the liver is a rare neoplasm, and no standard treatment for it has yet been established. A 72-year-old man with an extensive disease stage of small-cell carcinoma of the liver was treated with systemic chemotherapy consisting of cisplatin and etoposide (PE) followed by irinotecan. Although the masses were markedly decreased once after the sixth course of PE, amrubicin monotherapy as third-line chemotherapy was started because the hepatic masses had increased again. The administration of amrubicin was repeated in 8 courses with regression of the disease, resulting in a 26-month survival since the first-line chemotherapy was started. This is the first case report of a refractory EPSCC successfully treated with amrubicin
