Probing the Site for r-Process Nucleosyntheis with Abundances of Barium and Magnesium in Extremely Metal-Poor Stars

We suggest that if the astrophysical site for r-process nucleosynthesis in the early Galaxy is confined to a narrow mass range of Type II supernova (SN II) progenitors, with a lower mass limit of Mms = 20 Msun, a unique feature in the observed distribution of [Ba/Mg] vs.[Mg/H] for extremely metal-poor stars can be adequately reproduced. We associate this feature, a bifurcation of the observed elemental ratios into two branches in the Mg abundance interval -2.7 < [Mg/H] < -2.3, with two distinct processes. The first branch, which we call the ``y''-branch, is associated with the production of Ba and Mg from individual massive supernovae. We conclude that SNe II with Mms = 20 Msun are the dominant source of r-process nucleosynthesis in the early Galaxy. An SN-induced chemical evolution model with this Mms-dependent Ba yield creates the y-branch, reflecting the different nucleosynthesis yields of [Ba/Mg] for each SN II with Mms > 20 Msun. The second branch, which we call the ``i''-branch, is associated with the elemental abundance ratios of stars which were formed in the dense shells of the interstellar medium swept up by SNe II with Mms < 20 Msun that do not synthesize r-process elements, and applies to stars with observed Mg abundances in the range [Mg/H] < -2.7. The Ba abundances in these stars reflect those of the interstellar gas at the (later) time of their formation. The existence of a [Ba/Mg] i-branch strongly suggests that SNe II which are associated with stars of progenitor mass Mms < 20 Msun are infertile sources for the production of r-process elements. We predict the existence of this i-branch for other r-process elements, such as europium (Eu), to the extent that their production site is in common with Ba.Comment: 6 pages including 3 figures, to appear in ApJ Letter

SUMMARY The establishment of in vitro cultures of Echinacea angustifolia D.C. was obtained directly from sections of flower stalks of adult plants. The shoot formation was obtained from this plantmaterial placed on a modified MS basal medium named CH supplemented with 0.5 mg L1 6 benzylaminopurine (BA). The in vitro propagation procedure of E. angustifolia consisted of three distinct phases: an initial regeneration phase fromstalk sections (IP shoots on basal mediumwith 0.25 mg L1 BA), an elongation phase on active charcoal and an axillary proliferation of the shoots (AP shoots on basal medium with 0.5 mg L1 BA).Regenerating calli were established from leaves of in vitro shoots cultured on CH medium supplemented with 3 mg L1 BA and 0.5 mg L1 indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). Developed shoots from the callus cultures were subcultured on the CH medium with 0.5 mg L1 BA (leaf regenerated shoots: LR shoots). The secondary metabolite content of the in vitro plant material was compared with that of the greenhouse growing plants. The quali-quantitative LC-DAD-ESI-MS analysis on the extracts from axillary proliferation shoots (AP shoots) showed significant production of caffeic acid derivatives while leaf callus and LR shoots, accumulated mainly alkamides. These results showed that the proper choice of the procedures for in vitro multiplication allowed us to obtain plant biomass able to produce the active compounds typical of E. angustifolia plants

Superconducting properties of Gd-Ba-Cu-O single grains processed from a new, Ba-rich precursor compound

Gd-Ba-Cu-O (GdBCO) single grains have been previously melt-processed successfully in air using a generic Mg-Nd-Ba-Cu-O (Mg-NdBCO) seed crystal. Previous research has revealed that the addition of a small amount of BaO2 to the precursor powders prior to melt processing can suppress the formation of Gd/Ba solid solution, and lead to a significant improvement in superconducting properties of the single grains. Research into the effects of a higher Ba content on single grain growth, however, has been limited by the relatively small grain size in the earlier studies. This has been addressed by developing Ba-rich precursor compounds Gd-163 and Gd-143, fabricated specifically to enable the presence of greater concentrations of Ba during the melt process. In this study, we propose a new processing route for the fabrication of high performance GdBCO single grain bulk superconductors in air by enriching the precursor powder with these new Ba rich compounds. The influence of the addition of the new compounds on the microstructures and superconducting properties of GdBCO single grains is reported

The ability of three New Zealand local sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) cultivars 'Toka Toka Gold', 'Beauregard', and Owairaka Red' to form plantlets in vitro was investigated Meristematic tips (0.2–0.4 mm) of apical shoots from vines of the three cultivars, and from tubers of 'Owairaka Red' were cultured in modified Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium (MS medium) containing plant growth regulator (s). Cultivars and organs of explants differed in response to exogenous levels of plant growth regulator(s) and in the rate of proliferation. Optimal regeneration occurred in liquid MS medium supplemented with BA 0.1 mg/1 for 'Toka Toka Gold' and Owairaka Red' (from vines), and with BA 0.5 + IBA 0.1 mg/1 for 'Beauregard'. For Owairaka Red' (from tubers), MS liquid medium with BA 0.3 mg/1, and MS liquid medium with GA3 20 mg/1 (plus other organic compounds) proliferated shoots and plantlets. Continuous lighting inhibited the proliferation of plantlets in all three cultivars. Regeneration was strongly affected by the age of the shoots from which the explants were excised and the season when cultures were begun. Successful culture was obtained by culturing explants from young shoots in the Spring

The population of wiep (Grevillea Papuana) originated from Papua, decreased because of over cutting or over exploitation for timber, ornamental or medicine. Experiment was carried out to propagate wiep by using tissue culture method. Hypocotyls, cotyledons and nodes from seedlings grown in vitro, were used as explants. These explants were grown on Murashige & Skoog medium which macro and micronutrients were half strength, with or without hormones (BA 1 mg/1, BA 1 mg/1 + NAA 0,5 mg/1, BA 2 mg/1 + NAA 0,5 mg/1, BA 1 mg/1 + 2,4-D 0,5 mg/1, and BA 2 mg/1 + 2,4-D 0,5 mg/1).All explants did not produce callus on medium without hormones, but produced callus with hormones except BA treatment on cotyledon explants. Bigger callus were produced by explants that were treated by combination BA with NAA or 2,4-D compare to those treated by BA only. Nodes and hypocotyls could produce shoots, but cotyledons did not. Three kinds of explants did not produce any roots. Node is the best explants for producing shoots.Combination of BA 1 mg/1 and 2,4-D 0,5 mg/1 caused synergistic effect to stimulate shoot production of wiep hypocotyls explants

Reconstructing seasonality through stable-isotope and trace-element analyses of the Proserpine stalagmite, Han-sur-Lesse cave, Belgium : indications for climate-driven changes during the last 400 years

Fast-growing speleothems allow for the reconstruction of palaeoclimate down to a seasonal scale. Additionally, annual lamination in some of these speleothems yields highly accurate age models for these palaeoclimate records, making these speleothems valuable archives for terrestrial climate. In this study, an annually laminated stalagmite from the Han-sur-Lesse cave (Belgium) is used to study the expression of the seasonal cycle in northwestern Europe during the Little Ice Age. More specifically, two historical 12-year-long growth periods (ca. 1593-1605 CE and 1635-1646 CE) and one modern growth period (1960-2010 CE) are analysed on a sub-annual scale for their stable-isotope ratios (delta C-13 and delta O-18) and trace-element (Mg, Sr, Ba, Zn, Y, Pb, U) contents. Seasonal variability in these proxies is confirmed with frequency analysis. Zn, Y and Pb show distinct annual peaks in all three investigated periods related to annual flushing of the soil during winter. A strong seasonal in-phase relationship between Mg, Sr and Ba in the modern growth period reflects a substantial influence of enhanced prior calcite precipitation (PCP). In particular, PCP occurs during summers when recharge of the epikarst is low. This is also evidenced by earlier observations of increased delta C-13 values during summer. In the 17th century intervals, there is a distinct antiphase relationship between Mg, Sr and Ba, suggesting that processes other than PCP, i.e. varying degrees of incongruent dissolution of dolomite, eventually related to changes in soil activity and/or land-use change are more dominant. The processes controlling seasonal variations in Mg, Sr and Ba in the speleothem appear to change between the 17th century and 1960-2010 CE. The Zn, Y, Pb, and U concentration profiles; stable-isotope ratios; and morphology of the speleothem laminae all point towards increased seasonal amplitude in cave hydrology. Higher seasonal peaks in soil-derived elements (e.g. Zn and Y) and lower concentrations of host-rock-derived elements (e.g. Mg, Sr, Ba) point towards lower residence times in the epikarst and higher flushing rates during the 17th century. These observations reflect an increase in water excess above the cave and recharge of the epikarst, due to a combination of lower summer temperatures and increased winter precipitation during the 17th century. This study indicates that the transfer function controlling Mg, Sr and Ba seasonal variability varies over time. Which process is dominant - either PCP, soil activity or dolomite dissolution - is clearly climate driven and can itself be used as a palaeoenvironment proxy

Chemical abundance analysis of 19 barium stars

We aim at deriving accurate atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances of 19 barium (Ba) stars, including both strong and mild Ba stars, based on the high signal-to-noise ratio and high resolution Echelle spectra obtained from the 2.16 m telescope at Xinglong station of National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The chemical abundances of the sample stars were obtained from an LTE, plane-parallel and line-blanketed atmospheric model by inputting the atmospheric parameters (effective temperatures, surface gravities, metallicity and microturbulent velocity) and equivalent widths of stellar absorption lines. These samples of Ba stars are giants indicated by atmospheric parameters, metallicities and kinematic analysis about UVW velocity. Chemical abundances of 17 elements were obtained for these Ba stars. Their light elements (O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn and Ni) are similar to the solar abundances. Our samples of Ba stars show obvious overabundances of neutron-capture (n-capture) process elements relative to the Sun. Their median abundances of [Ba/Fe], [La/Fe] and [Eu/Fe] are 0.54, 0.65 and 0.40, respectively. The YI and ZrI abundances are lower than Ba, La and Eu, but higher than the light elements for the strong Ba stars and similar to the iron-peak elements for the mild stars. There exists a positive correlation between Ba intensity and [Ba/Fe]. For the n-capture elements (Y, Zr, Ba, La), there is an anti-correlation between their [X/Fe] and [Fe/H]. We identify nine of our sample stars as strong Ba stars with [Ba/Fe]>0.6 where seven of them have Ba intensity Ba=2-5, one has Ba=1.5 and another one has Ba=1.0. The remaining ten stars are classified as mild Ba stars with 0.17<[Ba/Fe]<0.54
