Causes of Death in Surgically Treated Patients with Type A Aortic Dissection - A Ten Year Review
Genetic Diversity of PCR-Positive, Culture-Negative and Culture-Positive Mycobacterium ulcerans Isolated from Buruli Ulcer Patients in Ghana.
Culture of Mycobacterium ulcerans from Buruli ulcer patients has very low sensitivity. Thus confirmation of M. ulcerans infection is primarily based on PCR directed against IS2404. In this study we compare the genotypes obtained by variable number of tandem repeat analysis of DNA from IS2404-PCR positive cultures with that obtained from IS2404 positive, culture-negative tissue. A significantly greater genetic heterogeneity was found among culture-negative samples compared with that found in cultured strains but a single genotype is over-represented in both sample sets. This study provides evidence that both the focal location of bacteria in a lesion as well as differences in the ability to culture a particular genotype may underlie the low sensitivity of culture. Though preliminary, data from this work also suggests that mycobacteria previously associated with fish disease (M. pseudoshottsii) may be pathogenic for humans
The US stock market leads the Federal funds rate and Treasury bond yields
Using a recently introduced method to quantify the time varying lead-lag
dependencies between pairs of economic time series (the thermal optimal path
method), we test two fundamental tenets of the theory of fixed income: (i) the
stock market variations and the yield changes should be anti-correlated; (ii)
the change in central bank rates, as a proxy of the monetary policy of the
central bank, should be a predictor of the future stock market direction. Using
both monthly and weekly data, we found very similar lead-lag dependence between
the S&P500 stock market index and the yields of bonds inside two groups: bond
yields of short-term maturities (Federal funds rate (FFR), 3M, 6M, 1Y, 2Y, and
3Y) and bond yields of long-term maturities (5Y, 7Y, 10Y, and 20Y). In all
cases, we observe the opposite of (i) and (ii). First, the stock market and
yields move in the same direction. Second, the stock market leads the yields,
including and especially the FFR. Moreover, we find that the short-term yields
in the first group lead the long-term yields in the second group before the
financial crisis that started mid-2007 and the inverse relationship holds
afterwards. These results suggest that the Federal Reserve is increasingly
mindful of the stock market behavior, seen at key to the recovery and health of
the economy. Long-term investors seem also to have been more reactive and
mindful of the signals provided by the financial stock markets than the Federal
Reserve itself after the start of the financial crisis. The lead of the S&P500
stock market index over the bond yields of all maturities is confirmed by the
traditional lagged cross-correlation analysis.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, 1 tabl
Uncertainty evaluation associated with versatile automated gauging influenced by process variations through design of experiments approach
Recent advances in versatile automated gauging have enabled accurate geometric tolerance assessment on the shop floor. This paper is concerned with the uncertainty evaluation associated with comparative coordinate measurement using the design of experiments (DOE) approach. It employs the Renishaw Equator which is a software-driven comparative gauge based on the traditional comparison of production parts to a reference master part. The fixturing requirement of each production part to the master part is approximately ±1 mm for a comparison process with an uncertainty of ±2 μm. Therefore, a number of experimental designs are applied with the main focus on the influence of part misalignment from rotation between master and measure coordinate frames on the comparator measurement uncertainty. Other factors considered include measurement mode mainly in scanning and touch-trigger probing (TTP) and alignment procedure used to establish the coordinate reference frame (CRF) with respect to the number of contact points used for each geometric feature measured. The measurement uncertainty analysis of the comparator technique used by the Equator gauge commences with a simple measurement task using a gauge block to evaluate the three-dimensional (3D) uncertainty of length comparative coordinate measurement influenced by an offset by tilt in one direction (two-dimensional angular misalignment). Then, a specific manufactured measurement object is employed so that the comparator measurement uncertainty can be assessed for numerous measurement tasks within a satisfactory range of the working volume of the versatile gauge. Furthermore, in the second case study, different types of part misalignment including both 2D and 3D angular misalignments are applied. The time required for managing the re-mastering process is also examined. A task specific uncertainty evaluation is completed using DOE. Also, investigating the effects of process variations that might be experienced by such a device in workshop environments. It is shown that the comparator measurement uncertainties obtained by all the experiments agree with system features under specified conditions. It is also demonstrated that when the specified conditions are exceeded, the comparator measurement uncertainty is associated with the measurement task, the measurement strategy used, the feature size, and the magnitude and direction of offset angles in relation to the reference axes of the machine. In particular, departures from the specified part fixturing requirement of Equator have a more significant effect on the uncertainty of length measurement in comparator mode and a less significant effect on the diameter measurement uncertainty for the specific Equator and test conditions
Ecologic Niche Modeling of Blastomyces dermatitidis in Wisconsin
Background: Blastomycosis is a potentially fatal mycosis that is acquired by inhaling infectious spores of Blastomyces dermatitidis present in the environment. The ecology of this pathogen is poorly understood, in part because it has been extremely difficult to identify the niche(s) it occupies based on culture isolation of the organism from environmental samples. Methodology/Principal Findings: We investigated the ecology of blastomycosis by performing maximum entropy modeling of exposure sites from 156 cases of human and canine blastomycosis to provide a regional-scale perspective of the geographic and ecologic distribution of B. dermatitidis in Wisconsin. Based on analysis with climatic, topographic, surface reflectance and other environmental variables, we predicted that ecologic conditions favorable for maintaining the fungus in nature occur predominantly within northern counties and counties along the western shoreline of Lake Michigan. Areas of highest predicted occurrence were often in proximity to waterways, especially in northcentral Wisconsin, where incidence of infection is highest. Ecologic conditions suitable for B. dermatitidis are present in urban and rural environments, and may differ at the extremes of distribution of the species in the state. Conclusions/Significance: Our results provide a framework for a more informed search for specific environmental factors modulating B. dermatitidis occurrence and transmission and will be useful for improving public health awareness of relativ
Structure of A=3 Nuclear Systems Using Realistic Hamiltonians
The structure of A=3 low-energy scattering states is described using the
hyperspherical harmonics method with realistic Hamiltonian models, consisting
of two- and three-nucleon interactions. Both coordinate and momentum space
two-nucleon potential models are considered.Comment: 3 pages, 1 table, Proceedings of the 20th European Conference on
