    Attractor Flows from Defect Lines

Deforming a two dimensional conformal field theory on one side of a trivial defect line gives rise to a defect separating the original theory from its deformation. The Casimir force between these defects and other defect lines or boundaries is used to construct flows on bulk moduli spaces of CFTs. It turns out, that these flows are constant reparametrizations of gradient flows of the g-functions of the chosen defect or boundary condition. The special flows associated to supersymmetric boundary conditions in N=(2,2) superconformal field theories agree with the attractor flows studied in the context of black holes in N=2 supergravity.Comment: 28 page

Uniform bounds on the 1-norm of the inverse of lower triangular Toeplitz matrices

    Get PDF
A uniform bound on the 1-norm is given for the inverse of a lower triangular Toeplitz matrix with non-negative monotonically decreasing entries whose limit is zero. The new bound is sharp under certain specified constraints. This result is then employed to throw light upon a long standing open problem posed by Brunner concerning the convergence of the one-point collocationmethod for the Abel equation. In addition, the recent conjecture of Gauthier et al. is proved

Tensor Product and Permutation Branes on the Torus

We consider B-type D-branes in the Gepner model consisting of two minimal models at k=2. This Gepner model is mirror to a torus theory. We establish the dictionary identifying the B-type D-branes of the Gepner model with A-type Neumann and Dirichlet branes on the torus.Comment: 26 page

Topic Maps as a Virtual Observatory tool

    Get PDF
One major component of the VO will be catalogs measuring gigabytes and terrabytes if not more. Some mechanism like XML will be used for structuring the information. However, such mechanisms are not good for information retrieval on their own. For retrieval we use queries. Topic Maps that have started becoming popular recently are excellent for segregating information that results from a query. A Topic Map is a structured network of hyperlinks above an information pool. Different Topic Maps can form different layers above the same information pool and provide us with different views of it. This facilitates in being able to ask exact questions, aiding us in looking for gold needles in the proverbial haystack. Here we discuss the specifics of what Topic Maps are and how they can be implemented within the VO framework. Evolution in the Clustering of Galaxies for Z < 1

Measuring the evolution in the clustering of galaxies over a large redshift range is a challenging problem. For a two-dimensional galaxy catalog, however, we can measure the galaxy-galaxy angular correlation function which provides information on the density distribution of galaxies. By utilizing photometric redshifts, we can measure the angular correlation function in redshift shells (Brunner 1997, Connolly et al. 1998) which minimizes the galaxy projection effect, and allows for a measurement of the evolution in the correlation strength with redshift. In this proceedings, we present some preliminary results which extend our previous work using more accurate photometric redshifts, and also incorporate absolute magnitudes, so that we can measure the evolution of clustering with either redshift or intrinsic luminosity.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures requires paspconf.sty. The National Virtual Observatory

As a scientific discipline, Astronomy is rather unique. We only have one laboratory, the Universe, and we cannot, of course, change the initial conditions and study the resulting effects. On top of this, acquiring Astronomical data has historically been a very labor-intensive effort. As a result, data has traditionally been preserved for posterity. With recent technological advances, however, the rate at which we acquire new data has grown exponentially, which has generated a Data Tsunami, whose wave train threatens to overwhelm the field. In this conference proceedings, we present and define the concept of virtual observatories, which we feel is the only logical answer to this dilemma.Comment: 5 pages, uses newpasp.sty (included), to appear in "Extragalactic Gas at Low Redshfit", ASP Conf. Chiral Supersymmetric Gepner Model Orientifolds

We explicitly construct A-type orientifolds of supersymmetric Gepner models. In order to reduce the tadpole cancellation conditions to a treatable number we explicitly work out the generic form of the one-loop Klein bottle, annulus and Moebius strip amplitudes for simple current extensions of Gepner models. Equipped with these formulas, we discuss two examples in detail to provide evidence that in this setting certain features of the MSSM like unitary gauge groups with large enough rank, chirality and family replication can be achieved.Comment: 37 pages, TeX (harvmac), minor changes, typos corrected, to appear in JHE
